Paul Monroe, often recognized by the alias "Jesus," is a major protagonist in Image Comics' The Walking Dead. Being an original inhabitant of the Hilltop Colony, he assumes the pivotal role of establishing contact with Rick Grimes, which opens up a broader world of possibilities. Initially met with suspicion from Rick, Jesus eventually earns his trust, becoming a valued ally and earning renown for his combat prowess. He further forms a romantic relationship with Aaron after the Whisperer War, and the two relocate to the Hilltop Colony as a couple.
Several years subsequent to Rick's passing, Jesus and Aaron choose to reside alongside a riverbank, marking a new chapter in their post-apocalyptic journey.
Appearance[]
Jesus is depicted as a tall, strong, and agile individual with fit physique, showing great physical prowess and agility. He has long, dark brown hair that falls in unruly waves, often framing his face. His facial hair consists of a well-maintained beard and mustache that adds to his rugged yet groomed demeanor.
He is often seen wearing practical and utilitarian clothing suited for the post-apocalyptic world, including dark-colored pants and shirts that allow him ease of movement. One of his most iconic accessories is his dark, bandana-style scarf that covers the lower half of his face, giving him a distinctive and mysterious appearance.
Personality[]
Paul is a deeply rational, logical, and contemplative individual renowned for his adept advisory skills. He places immense importance on principles of fairness and justice, firmly adhering to the belief that individuals should avoid criticizing actions they wouldn't undertake themselves.
Initially presenting as a laid-back individual with a playful sense of humor upon his debut, Paul's true nature gradually unfolds over the course of the narrative. He tends to carry a serious demeanor, consistently advocating for moral correctness and decisive action. Paul's prowess as a survivalist shines in the context of the zombie apocalypse, allowing him to accomplish remarkable feats of human capability. His distinctive feature is his flowing hair and beard, reminiscent of modern depictions of the Biblical figure Jesus, a moniker his companions affectionately adopt due to their perception of him as a "savior."
Remarkably skilled in hand-to-hand combat, Paul is arguable the most proficient fighter in the series. He dispatches zombies with remarkable ease and handles hostile threats with confidence. Demonstrating his expertise, he efficiently neutralizes Abraham Ford and Michonne, both renowned combatants, and manages to hold his ground against larger adversaries like Negan, Abraham, and even Beta, despite the latter's towering stature. Paul's resourcefulness extends beyond combat; he has a knack for escaping seemingly hopeless situations, exemplified by his breakout from captivity by the Saviors. These very traits led to his appointment as the Hilltop's emissary and scout, roles he assumes in his efforts to rally support against the Saviors.
Possessing quick wits and strong tactical acumen, Paul stands as a loyal ally of Rick. He actively assists Rick and Ezekiel in coordinating strategies against The Saviors, often serving as the frontline representative. His strategic thinking aids him in overcoming daunting odds, such as rescuing Rick's group from a sizable Savior battalion single-handedly. Paul's unwavering commitment occasionally sparks clashes with Gregory, the leader of Hilltop. As a result, he relocates to the Alexandria Safe-Zone, driven by his belief in Rick's capacity to lead humanity towards a brighter future. He remains resolute in his determination to support Rick's aspirations and ensure their realization.
