Paul Blart is the titular main protagonist of Paul Blart: Mall Cop film series. He is the main security officer at West Orange Pavilion Mall who tries his best to protect the mall, and all inside of it.
He was portrayed by Kevin James, who also portrayed Doug Heffernan from The King of Queens, Will Cooper from Pixels, and he voices Otis from Barnyard, Scott Voss from Here Comes the Boom, and Frankenstein from the Hotel Transylvania franchise.
Personality[]
Paul Blart is someone who tries his best to protect everyone, no matter the cost. Despite his status as a security guard, Paul does his best to help out around the mall and help others. Paul takes his job as a security officer very seriously, and often goes above what is necessary for simple situations, such as demanding IDs from people in a mall argument. Unlike the rest of the mall officers, Paul is much more active, and is well known by the mall staff.
Paul is also very protective over both his family and his mall. During the first movie, Paul's desire to protect Amy and the other hostages leads him to defeat Veck and his gang of mall robbers, and during the second movie he is increasingly protective over Maya.
Despite all of this, Paul's biggest fear is losing all that he has. This fear is exploited by some of his later foes, such as Vincent Sofel.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Before the events of Paul Blart :Mall Cop, Paul Blart went to high school with the movie's secondary antagonist, James Kent. James Kent would harass Blart during their time at high school, doing things such as setting him on fire. After high school, Paul would apply to enter the New Jersey police, however due to his hypoglycemia, Paul would end up failing the exam numerous times, leaving him to become a mall cop.
Paul would also meet his wife, an immigrant who would have their child, Maya Blart, and then abandoned him for citizenship status. During this time, it can be assumed that Paul moved into his mother's house due to his poor financial decision.
Paul Blart: Mall Cop[]
During Paul's daily routine, he is tasked with helping new recruit Veck Simms around the mall. As Paul helps Veck out, he notices Amy Anderson, and he immediately falls in love. Paul would later go to the American Joe's along with Amy, where he would partake in a nacho eating contest. This contest would lead to Paul getting severely drunk and him embarrassing himself in front of everyone, including Amy.
After this, Paul would spend his Thanksgiving alone with his family, saddened at his embarrassment. He would later try to apologize to Amy, which would result in an awkward exchange between the two. Paul would later oversee the mall and make sure everything was going okay, as it was Black Friday, the busiest day of the year. Paul would later be tasked with helping lock up the arcade, where Paul would walk up the Rock Band machine and play it.
Mall Takeover[]
As Paul jammed out to Rock Band, Veck would begin his takeover of the mall. The mall was cleared of civilians, except for a key group of civilians which Veck kept hostage, including Amy and many other of Paul's friends. Paul would walk out into a deserted mall, and was clueless as to where everyone was. He would notice two robbers, and inform them the mall was closed, to which one of them would pull a gun on Paul, causing him to flee the scene. He later tries to escape the mall, but notices Amy's car, and chooses to go back for her.
As the man on the inside, Paul was told by Sergeant Howard to try to take down the mall robbers and find out where the hostages were. One by one, the mall robbers would be taken down by Paul, with Paul using some unorthodox methods to take them down, such as attacking one with a tanning bed. As more robbers fell, Paul would finally discover where the hostages were, and would try to save them. However, he would fail to rescue them, and was confronted by Veck about his failure. Paul would then shoot hot sauce into his eyes, but didn't capitalize on his opportunity to take him down, resulting in Veck escaping with Amy and Maya.
Pursuing Veck[]
As Veck ran off with Amy and Maya, Paul Blart would use the mall's display car to break out of the mall. As he broke out, the SWAT officers assigned by Kent would begin to fire at him, with Kent immediately telling them to suppress their fire as he ran over to Paul. Kent would hop into the car, and the two would try to catch up with Veck's car. Paul would attempt to jump onto Veck's car to stop him, but would fail, causing him to run across the field to get to the airport before Veck. As Veck arrived at his plane, Paul would intercept him, and the two would enter a fight. As the two began to fight, Paul would faint suddenly in battle, leading to Veck smiling as he walked towards the plane. However, this was Paul's trick; he faked fainting in order to distract Veck as he hit him with a sweep attack, leaving Veck downed. As Paul cuffed Veck, Kent would arrive and congratulate Paul on taking down Veck. However, Kent would suddenly take out his gun and aim it at Paul, revealing his involvement in the mall robbery and his association with Veck. Kent demanded the mall codes, to which Paul chose to destroy them instead, for the good of the mall. However, this would be futile, as Kent ordered his SWAT team to only allow him to see the codes from the mall robbers. As Kent began to monologue, Chief Brooks would arrive and shoot the pistol out of Kent's hand, leading to Sergeant Howard arresting Kent.
In the aftermath, Paul gave his birthday card to Amy, and apologized for the situation she had went through. The two would walk away together, and would later get married at the West Orange Pavilion Mall.
Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2[]
At the beginning of the first movie, it is revealed that Paul would end up getting into a divorce with his wife, Amy, over complications with Amy's desire for marriage. Paul's mother would also pass away due to an accident with a truck hitting her. Paul Blart would be left with only himself and his daughter, Maya, after these events.
Vegas[]
As Paul continued his normal routine, he would receive a letter inviting him to a security officer conference after saving the West Pavilion Orange Mall in the first movie. Excited, Paul invites his daughter to come with him, and both of them travel to Las Vegas to go to the conference. Paul would take residence in the Wynn Hotel, where a nefarious plot to steal paintings was brewing, led by Vincent Sofel.
As Paul gets excited about the conference, he later learns that he would not be the key speaker that evening, leading to him getting sad. Paul later finds Maya's UCLA acceptance letter, leading him to get worried over her, as he didn't want to be alone. Paul would later go to the conference and give his speech.
Taking Down Vincent[]
After the conference, Paul learns that Vincent has kidnapped Maya and her boyfriend, Lane, and is planning on stealing numerous paintings. As Paul defeats his team of robbers, he teams up with the other security guards to take them down. Paul would later go on top of the roof, and used a zipline to get to where Vincent was. However, he would get stuck on the roof, and Vincent would aim his gun at him. Maya would then spread oatmeal lotion on his face, giving him an allergic reaction and allowing Paul to subdue him.
In the aftermath, Paul is shown to be accepting of Maya's choice to go to UCLA.

- Combat Skills: Despite his failure of the State Trooper exam, Paul contains valuable combat skills. He's able to take down numerous foes across the series with his combat, and can take down assailants without the need of a weapon.
- Resourcefulness : Paul is able to use his environment to his advantage, and use many items to defeat his foes. Examples of Paul's resourcefulness come from his use of hot sauce to distract Veck, his use of a scuba tank as a weapon, and the toy robot he uses to distract a mall robber.
- Deceptive Appearance: Paul's appearance as an ordinary security guard allows him to gain the upper hand on some opponents, as they underestimate his abilities.
- Segway: Paul's most iconic skill is his mastery of Segways. Paul uses his segway to traverse the mall, and can use it to increase his speed and make tight jumps, such as jumping from one rooftop to the other.
- Strength: In spite being overweight, Paul's physical strength is used for fighting and crashing through doors and windows.
Weaknesses:[]
- Hypoglycemia: Paul's hypoglycemia gets him into numerous bad situations throughout the course of the two movies. If he doesn't have enough sugar in his bloodstream, Paul will be rendered immobile and unable to react to deadly situations unless he regains sugar. A key example of this is in the first movie, where his hypoglycemia causes him to faint during the State Trooper exam. However, Paul can use his hypoglycemia to his advantage by tricking opponents into believing he's fainted because of it. A key example of this is during Paul and Veck's final fight at the airport, where Paul pretends to faint. This causes Veck to lose his guard and believe he's won, leading to Paul using a sweep attack to render Veck incapacitated.
Trivia[]
- Paul's change of attire from a white shirt to a black shirt during the first movie's finale could be reflective of his greater character shift as he changes from an ordinary mall cop to a force to be reckoned with.
- Paul Blart's use of a segway has popularized the association of segways with mall security.
