Sergeant Paul Jackson is the secondary playable character and protagonist in the 2007 first person shooter, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and its 2016 remaster.

He was a member of 1st Force Recon, who were assigned to stop Khaled Al-Asad after he executes the Saudi Arabian president, by pursuing him through the capital. Jackson was among the 30,000 killed by a nuke detonated by Al-Asad (under the order of Vladimir Makarov), which would lead to the instigation of World War III five years later.

Background[]

Not much is known about Paul Jackson's past, but he was born in the mid-to-late twentieth century and later joined the United States Marine Corps. Jackson managed to be promoted to the rank of sergeant, and later joined the 1st Force Reconnaissance Company, a USMC unit that is also known as 1st Force Recon.

Call of Duty 4[]

When Khaled Al-Asad commits a coup d'état on Saudi Arabian president, Yasir Al-Fulani, 1st Force Recon were assigned to apprehend Al-Asad in capital city. During the invasion of the Makkah Coast, Sergeant Jackson fought against opposing forces under the command of Lieutenant Vasquez and Staff Sergeant Griggs. Command learned that Al-Asad was giving a speech at an unnamed tv station, and the squad was assigned to deal with OpFor to reach the station. Though recon managed to breach the tv station, they found that it was empty, with only a looping broadcast of Al-Asad's speech there. Despite the failure of the mission, 1st Force Recon continued with their pursuit.

When the Abrams tank War Pig was stranded in the outskirts, 1st Force Recon were assigned to reach the tank and protect it from OpFor. Sergeant Jackson and his team were ambushed by enemy forces, but managed to eliminate gunners inside of abandoned buildings. After battling more OpFor soldiers, Jackson was ordered by Vasquez to eliminate tanks before destroying a ZPU, allowing Lieutenant Volker to give air support. The recon team managed to reach War Pig and defended the area, and Vasquez decided that his team should stay in the bog to protect it until they could move War Pig. Jackson then participated in moving War Pig from the city to be extracted to an LZ, where they regrouped with Sea Knight.

Jackson and his team were then assigned to capture Al-Asad in the capital city, and the sergeant was assigned as Sea Knight's gunner to eliminate opposing forces. After assisting in eliminating enemies to let in ground forces, Vasquez was assigned to rescue a reconnaissance unit that was pinned down by OpFor. When Command ordered all of the Marines to leave the city there was a discovery of a nuclear threat, Jackson provided support alongside Captain "Deadly" Pelayo. She was then shot down, and Vasquez decided to rescue her before leaving the capital. Returning to Sea Knight, the team were leaving the city before the nuke detonated, causing the helicopter to crash. Jackson survived the impact of the plane and walked through the destroyed streets, and saw the mushroom cloud before dying of his wounds.

Legacy[]

Jackson was among the thirty-thousand soldiers killed from the nuke, which caused the Marines' commander, General Shepherd, to fall into madness. Shepherd would instigate a Third World War to have more civilians join the military and get revenge on Russia, but he would be killed by Captain John "Soap" MacTavish for betraying Task Force 141. In Modern Warfare 3, it's revealed that the Russian Ultranationalist, Vladimir Makarov, signaled for Al-Asad to detonate the nuke. Despite his and his comrades' deaths, Jackson was avenged by SAS Captain John Price, who killed Al-Asad in 2011 and Makarov in 2017 following the third world war.
