Payakan is a supporting protagonist of the 2022 film Avatar: The Way of Water.

He is a young bull tulkun who was labeled as an outcast by not only the Metkayina Clan, but the larger tulkun community. Due to his actions in a past skirmish against the RDA, wherein multiple tulkun and reef Navi perished, Payakan was banished from his pod for partaking in a battle and leading to the deaths of his brothers and sisters. Years later, he encounters Jake Sully and Neytiri's younger son Lo'ak, whereupon the two of them forge a near-unbreakable bond of friendship.

He is played by Kevin Dorman.

Biography[]

When Payakan was young, his mother was killed by Resources Development Administration’s whalers. To revenge his mother’s death, he gathered other young Tulkuns and their Na'vi spiritual brothers and sisters to attack the whalers, but resulted most of them killed. After then, Payakan becomes a wanderer gained a reputation of an outcast of Tulkuns and the Na'vi tribe.

Payakan saves Lo'ak from a pursuing Akula, Lo’ak thanks Payakan for saving him and thus bonds him as his spiritual brother. Soon Lo’ak discovers a harpoon on Payakan’s pectoral fin, and helps removed it.

Payakan takes Lo’ak to the Metkayina clan village, after returning to the village, Lo’ak tells his siblings and friends about Payakan. But Tsireya, Aonung and Roxto warns that Payakan is an outcast. Lo’ak leaves the village to find Payakan, Payakan opened his mouth showed his memory to Lo’ak, then Lo’ak and Tsireya was scolded by Tonowari and Ronal.

Later, when Lo’ak, Tsireya and Tuktirey were captured by Miles Quatrich and his forces, Payakan leaps from the ocean and crushes the Seadragon and attacks the other whaling vessels. After the Seadragon sunk, he carries Jake and Lo’ak to the surface. During Neteyam’s funeral, he is seen swimming with Lo’ak.
