Hero Overview

"GET OUTTA MY PUB!!".
~ Peggy Mitchell's famous catchphrase - whenever she orders anyone in The Queen Victoria public house to get out of the pub.
"My dear, darling Peggy, I've been racking my brain to think of a good way of saying this. But the truth is, there is no good way. It breaks my heart to say it. But I am leaving you. Perhaps there's a small part you that is aware that no matter how hard I've tried I've never been quite able to stop myself loving Pat. I fell in you with her the day I met her. And the feelings have never gone away. I might have learned to live with that. If it weren't for the fact that she feels the same way about me. We both of us struggled long and hard to hide these feelings and pretend they weren't there. But when the four of us when on holiday with Terry and Irene to Spain, Pat and I found ourselves unable to pretend any longer. These last few weeks have been pure torture for us both. Neither you nor Roy deserve this. You both are fine people. And I pray that in time you will find it in your hearts to forgive us for the pain we have caused. By the time you read this we will both be long gone. With great affection, Frank".
~ Peggy Mitchell famously exposes the affair of her husband Frank Butcher and her best friend Pat Harris, also his former spouse, in front of everyone at The Queen Vic on Bonefire Night 2000.
"So, why they're still here? It's a bit of a mystery! But one thing I've learned since I've been married to Mr. Butcher, is never underestimate his capacity to make a cock-up of things! Apologizes to all of you who've already received the invitations to the renewal of our wedding vows. No doubt, they'll be collector's items soon. So, all it remains for me is to present the prizes. (Slaps both Frank and Pat on the faces). Hope you enjoy the fireworks. Goodnight!!".
~ Peggy gets revenge on Pat and Frank for their affair by slapping the two in public shortly after exposing their betrayal to Pat's husband Roy Evans and everyone else in The Queen Vic on Bonefire Night 2000.
"I don't think you know who you're dealing with here. I'm not come cuddly little old lady. I'm Peggy Mitchell! I'm old East End, real East End, proper - you don't mess with me!".
~ Peggy Mitchell's most famous quote as she has a showdown with her villainous spouse Archie Mitchell at The Queen Victoria public house on Christmas Night 2009.

Peggy Mitchell is a fictional character and primary protagonist of the BBC British soap opera EastEnders.

She originally appeared in 10 episodes from 1991 before becoming a full-time regular from November 1994 to September 2010, practically serving as one of the show's central protagonists during that time. She later made brief appearances in between 2013-2015 before reappearing in 2016, wherein the character was ultimately killed-off.

Initially played by Joe Warne in 1991, the character was famously portrayed by the late Barbara Windsor throughout her duration on the show.

Biography[]

Peggy Mitchell is the matriarch of the iconic Mitchell Family that originally came to Albert Square, the market town of fictional East London borough Walford, in the early 1990s. She is the mother of two hardman sons Phil and Grant - famously known as the "Mitchell Brothers" - along with a daughter named Sam.

Since becoming a full-time regular in 1994, Peggy has represented some of the show's biggest and most highly-prolific storylines to date. These include an initial hate campaign against Mark Fowler over his HIV situation, a longstanding feud with her estranged sister-in-law Sharon Watts that begun in the aftermath of the "Sharongate" scenario, developing a competitive rivalry and at times friendship with her perceived frenemy Pat Evans, marrying Pat's lover Frank Butcher before later exposing his affair with Pat in front of everyone in the Queen Vic, clashing with several of the show's major villains like Janine Butcher and Johnny Allen, being romantically entangled with her villainous brother-in-law Archie Mitchell, and coping with Phil's alcoholism and mental breakdown that would ultimately lead to her 2010 exit in the "Queen Vic Fire Week".

In her other major storyline, Peggy endured a prolonging ordeal with breast cancer since 1996 and was able to overcome it before the cancer eventually returned in 2016. This resulted in Peggy committing suicide in May 2016.
