~ Peppy Hare's most famous quote. |
Peppy Hare (Japanese: ペッピー・ヘア, Hepburn: Peppī Hea) is the tritagonist of the Star Fox franchise and is the elder figure of the team. He first appeared in Star Fox for the SNES in 1993. He was originally part of the original Star Fox team along with James McCloud, and Pigma Dengar, until the latter betrayed the team, leading James McCloud to be killed by Andross.
In the Japanese version, he was voiced by Tomohisa Asō in Star Fox 64, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Star Fox Assault, and Kunpei Sakamoto in Star Fox 64 3D, Star Fox Zero.
In the English version, he was voiced by the late Rick May (who also voiced the Soldier) in Star Fox 64, Chris Seavor (who also voiced Conker the Squirrel) in Star Fox Adventures and Super Smash Bros. Melee, Henry Dardenne in Star Fox: Assault, Dex Manley in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Jaz Adams in Star Fox 64 3D, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, Star Fox Zero, and Mark Whitten in Star Fox Zero: The Battle Begins.
Personality and Traits[]
Peppy's character throughout the games and spin-off media is traditionally an advisor, usually providing useful hints and tips for Fox to take. In all of the games and spin-off media, Peppy is consistently thought of as being a father figure to Fox and the rest of the team, due to Fox no longer having his biological father and not having a son of his own, along having been lifelong friends with James and having witnessed Fox grow from a young child to an experienced pilot. Also, his daughter Lucy Hare adds that he sees Krystal as a "second daughter". The "Peppy" part of his full name may come from his "peppy" behavior in "Star Fox 64", but this has become more contradicted in the later games, due to age.
While Peppy turned down the position of Star Fox's leader despite being the most experienced pilot, he insists that Fox should take the title instead, and he still willing to give commanding advice to which the other characters respond likely to due to his seniority. In his older age, Peppy appears to have a gentle nagging side and disapproves any type of tomfoolery, evident when Slippy has a knack for breaking formation or gets himself into a dangerous situation, or when Falco exceeds his speed. Even after his retirement from active duty in Adventures, Peppy still keeps his wise, senior behavior but apparently gained a sense of absent-mindedness due to age, and even falling asleep on the game's main menu until woken up by the player's selection.
In Assault, with Krystal now taking his place as the fourth pilot, Peppy has now taken a more secondary command position to complement his advisory role, whilst directing instructions and giving orders to the active team. Stages in the game also bring a more reckless side to Peppy, evidently when he flew an Arwing out of the blue to rescue his old friend, General Pepper from a fatal crash while also getting hurt, and disregarded his own life when flying the Great Fox into the powerful shield.
In the crossover of Starlink: Battle for Atlas, it's shown that Peppy wants the team to stay focused on the main task ahead of him and not bother with other sub-missions, as shown when the team ended up in the Atlas Star System to find Wolf, only to see the Equinox's pilots in need of help to take out the members of The Forgotten Legion, Fox was willing to help them out, but Peppy refuses to do so and just wants to take down Wolf. Fox, Falco, and Slippy do not listen and take off to help them while Peppy wished that he retired back on Corneria earlier, then he reluctantly follows the trio.
Appearance[]
Although Peppy's last name suggests that he is a hare, he is actually a rabbit with traits such as long ears, large incisors, and a country accent to go with it, which mellow out in each game as he gets older. He consistently wears a long trench coat with a long collar, with inner-clothing similar to Fox McCloud, Falco Lombardi and Slippy Toad's except that it is red in color. In later games, he is shown to have grown a white mustache. From "Star Fox 64" to "Star Fox 64 3D", Peppy is grey furred. His brown fur returns as of "Zero".
