~ Perrito explaining to Puss how one life is really enough to live. |
Perrito is the deuteragonist of DreamWorks' 43rd full-length animated feature film Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, a spin-off of the Shrek franchise.
He is a therapy dog who started out living at Mama Luna's house because he disguised himself as a cat. He met the cat named Puss in Boots, and they became fast friends, at least in Perrito's eyes. He then followed Puss and his lover Kitty Softpaws to find the Last Wish before Goldilocks and Big Jack Horner, even though he himself didn't have a wish of his own.
Throughout their journey, he would ultimately touch the hearts of the cats and fully form their unity, known as "Team Friendship". He also originally did not have a name that stuck with him, until he was given his current name by Puss.
Perrito also plays a minor supporting role in the Puss in Boots short The Trident.
He is voiced by Harvey Guillén, who also voiced Odie in The Garfield Movie.
Biography[]
Perrito originally met Puss when Puss forced to retire from adventuring and moved to Mama Luna's house as a domesticated cat. Perrito was disguised as one of the cats there and he kept communicating with Puss there despite Puss not really being that interested. However, when Goldilocks and the Three Bears Crime Family came looking for Puss, and leave when they find Puss' "grave".
After Puss overhears them talk about the Wishing Star which the map leading to it is going in the possession of Jack Horner, Puss decides to go after it hoping it could restore all the lives he lost, but Perrito decided to go with him.
It is there the two meet up with Puss' old friend Kitty Softpaws who was also after the map for her own wish, to find someone who she can trust. the trip then go on journey as they follow throw the roses, As well as over the river. Perro tried to catch the stick, but gets kidnapped and taken hostage by Jack Horner. He was then freed when Goldi and The Bears intervene, as he runs while the Bakers' attempt to kill him.
Once he noticed Puss running away, he goes after him in which the latter reveals to Perro that Death is after him , in which he comforts him. As the trip walk over in the forest, they notice that Goldi and The Bears were in the house sit the Map as Puss and Kitty have Perro stay. When he noticed Puss and Kitty escape, he attempts to follow them but gets kidnapped by Goldi and The Bears.
Kitty then goes to rescue Perrito while Puss finds a way in the Soul's Cave. Goldi and the Bears then make a booby-trap in order to get the Map back from the cats using Perrito as bait, a couple of minutes later Baby Bear and Goldilocks start a fight, which is amused and mocked by Perrito, Baby Bear tells Perrito to stay out of the fight, which causes Perrito to laugh and insult the Three Bears and Goldilocks with profanity, which makes Mama Bear and Papa Bear laugh and admire Perrito, then Perrito tells Goldilocks that her family is funny and her being an orphan won her the orphan the lottery, which makes Goldilocks put sensitive, when Mama Bear says that they should adopt Perrito since he's just like them, Kitty stealthily takes Perrito and replaces he with a fake statue of Perrito, which makes Baby Bear angry and takes the statue, but just as Goldilocks reminds Baby Bear about the trap it's too late as they fell for the trap.
As Puss escapes the Soul's Cave, Perro and Kitty noticed him running away, unaware that he is escaping from Death. Just as Puss is about to use the Wishing Star, Perro and Kitty follow him, as Kitty calls Puss out for his selfishness, while Perro is heartbroken of the two arguing. Before Kitty leaves, Puss reveals to her that Death is after him. Jack Horner and his last baker then go after the wish, followed by Mama, along with Goldi, Baby, and Papa Bear as they battle while trying to get the Wishing Star map.
Perrito catches the Map as he received it to Puss, in which he tells the latter that maybe one life is enough. Then, Death showed up, and created a ring of fire, that prevented Perrito from reaching Puss. After the fight, Big Jack Horner ate the growing cookie, and became huge. He was about to make the wish, when Perrito distracted him by finally using the cute eyes.
After Goldi, Kitty, and Puss destroy the map, Perrito and the others escape the star, and watched as Jack fell to his death. Puss, Kitty, and Perrito bid farewell to Goldi and the bears, and Perrito decided to stick with his current name.
A while later, Puss, Kitty, and Perrito steal the Governor’s boat, and Perrito declares that their team name is now officially Team Friendship. As the movie ended, the trio went out to find new adventures, and to see some "old friends".
Personality[]
Perrito is a happy-go-lucky, optimistic dog whose goal is to be a therapy dog in the future. He makes the best out of everything, shown by how unfazed he was when talking about his backstory, in which he was thrown off to a river inside a sock and he made the best of it by getting a "free sweater" out of the sock.
As Perrito is the only one who can keep the Dark Forest as a pure and safe place due to the lack of selfishness in his heart whenever he is in contact with the map (as the forest becomes a reflection on the heart of whoever last touched the map), he is the only one who is best qualified to carry it throughout their journey.
Quotes[]

~ Perrito shows his abilities of insulting someone to Goldilocks and Three Bears and also his hilariously infamous quote |

Trivia[]
- Despite being a source of comedic relief and one of the more pure characters in the movie, Perrito is also the most foul-mouthed, being the only character to use profanities to the point that when he joins in Goldi and Baby Bear's insult battle, he shocks the whole family with his "vocabulary".
- A common headcanon in the community is that Death could have saved Perrito when he was thrown in the river, which would make sense as Perrito exemplifies the movie's theme of cherishing life, which Death also does and thus saving him to let him live his life out properly would make sense.
- Perrito is unique in the movie's cast of major characters as he is introduced with an "Unwanted" poster instead of a wanted poster. The only other character to not have a wanted poster is the Wolf, aka Death, who lacks any sort of introduction poster due to being the physical manifestation of death.
- Perrito is one of the two major characters not to want to make a wish on the Wishing Star, next to Death.
- Perrito's name literally means "Puppy" in Spanish, which is exactly what he is. Specifically, "Perrito" is the term for a male puppy, with "Perrita" being the term for a female puppy, and the feminine form of "Perrito".
- According to the Via Audio Commentary, John Mulaney was originally supposed to voice Perrito in the film, but the filmmakers didn’t think his comedy would fit with Perrito's "sincerity". He ended up voicing Big Jack Horner instead.
