Petra Leyte is a major character in the 2014 Japanese dark fantasy light novel series Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World as well as its anime television series & manga adaptations of the same name. She also appears in several short stories and video games based in the narrative universe of Re:Zero.

Petra was a young girl who lived in Arlam, a small rural village located in the territory of the nobleman Margrave Roswaal L. Mathers. Petra aspired to move to the capital of Lugunica (the nation she lived in) and become a tailor when she grew up. However, her life changed forever when a teenage boy five years Petra's senior named Subaru Natsuki, who worked in the mansion of Lord Roswaal, started visiting the village.

When he visited the village, Subaru would play with Petra and her friends. Shortly after meeting Natsuki, the children of Arlam including Petra were kidnapped by a pack of ferocious mabeasts who intended to drain them of their magical energy. However, Subaru ventured into the forests surrounding the village to get Petra & her friends back from the monsters. Thanks to the efforts of Natsuki and his allies, the children were saved.

After the mabeast incident, Leyte developed a precocious crush on her saviour that only grew as time went on. Around a month and a half later, Petra decided to throw away her dream of becoming a tailor, choosing instead to seek employment at Lord Roswaal's mansion where she could be closer to Subaru. Despite her young age, Petra was able to secure a job as a maid at the mansion and quickly found a mentor in Frederica Baumann, a demi-human servant who treated Leyte like a little sister.

Petra is voiced by Marika Kouno in the Japanese version of the anime and by Erica Mendez in the English version. Mendez has also voiced Gon Freecss in Hunter x Hunter, Ryūko Matoi in Kill la Kill, Megumin in KonoSuba: God's Blessing on this Wonderful World!, Emma in The Promised Neverland, Mash Kyrielight in Fate/Grand Order, Diane in The Seven Deadly Sins, Raphtalia in The Rising of the Shield Hero, Melissa Shield in My Hero Academia, Towa Higurashi in Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon, and Nico Yazawa in Love Live! School Idol Project.

Appearance[]

During her life as a village child, Petra wore common clothes that consisted of a pair of brown shoes, green leggings with horizontal stripes that were shorn just above the ankles, a white long-sleeved shirt, an open short-sleeved cream-colored cardigan with red outlining, and a red ribbon fastened to her collar.

Personality[]

Petra Leyte was a pure-hearted innocent young girl who often tried her best to help and nurture others, regardless of whether doing so was detrimental to her. Her sweet personality was enough to mellow the hearts of those who interacted with her, particularly Subaru and Frederica, whose moods brightened just from talking with her. Unlike many people in Lugunica, Petra harbored no xenophobic tendencies towards demi-humans, instead judging people off of their deeds and personalities. She, alongside the other children of Arlam, neglected to treat the silver-haired half-elf Emilia with any prejudice.

For someone so young Petra was incredibly brave, choosing to prioritize the lives and wellbeing of others above her own in situations of crisis. When the disguised Ulgarm fled into the Ulgarm-infested woods, Petra, who was unaware of the creature's true identity, steeled her nerves and traversed into the forest to rescue the animal from danger. When Elsa Granhiert took her hostage and brought her before Subaru and her fellow maids, Petra, although terrified at the prospect of dying, told her friends to flee and save themselves rather than rescue her.

History[]

Early Life[]

Petra Leyte lived in the Dragonfriend Kingdom of Lugunica, one of the four great nations of the world known partially for its reverence of the Holy Dragon Volcanica and its xenophobic treatment of all demi-humans, particularly half-elves. The reason half-elves were so despised was because the Witch of Envy who had nearly destroyed the world four centuries ago was a silver-haired half-elf. There were even persisting rumors that the vile worshippers of the Witch known as the Witch Cult kidnapped any silver-haired half-elves. Petra was born into a modest family in the small rural village Arlam that was located within the territory of the Lugunican nobleman Lord Roswaal L. Mathers. Mathers, whose primary residence was located near to the village, was known for his eccentricities and his unparalleled mastery of magic.

Both the village and Roswaal's mansion were surrounded by a vast forest. The area around the village was populated by vicious hound-like mabeasts known as Ulgarm who feasted upon the magical energy contained within humans. However, thanks to a set of magical crystals set around the village perimeter, the mabeasts were unable to enter and massacre the population. Petra was one of the few children who grew up together in the relatively unpopulated village. She usually played with fellow children Cain, Dine, Lucas, Meina, and Mild. As a young girl, her mother taught her how to sew, and she became fairly good at it, so much so that she could be considered incredibly talented at it.

Petra was a pretty young girl, who, by the age of twelve, realized she could use her natural cuteness to get herself out of trouble. One day, while playing a ball game with Lucas and Mild, one of the children accidently struck the ball into an adult's window, smashing it. Although the adult initially scolded the kids, his anger abated when Petra used her adorableness to sooth his temper. Later on during the day, Petra found a foreigner selling his wares in the middle of the village. The man was selling exotic fabrics from across the world, and Leyte, who was enamoured by the goods, purchased a few fabrics and brought them home. Upon showing her parents the fabrics, Petra decided to move to Lugunica's capital and become a tailor when she grew up.
