Phan Hải is the deuteragonist of the Vietnamese crime drama series The Arbitrator, based on the Israeli crime drama series of the same name.
He is the son of Phan Quân, the leader of the Phan Thị Group, and a gangster on his own right. When Lê Thành is introduced to his life and threatens his position as Phan Quân's successor, he is determined to prove himself at all cost. Ironically, this makes him becomes more and more empathetic, to the point that he eventually becomes a heroic figure while Lê Thành goes down a dark path.
He was portrayed by Việt Anh.
Personality[]
Phan Hải's journey parallels Lê Thành's. While Lê Thành slowly becomes more ruthless, Phan Hải instead becomes more caring. At the beginning of the series, Phan Hải is characterized as reckless and hotheaded, preferring to use brute strength to solve problems and his connections to get out of troubles, as well as lacking academic intelligence. He also commits adultery, something that displeases Phan Quân, who believes that a man should value his family above all. This has caused Phan Quân's headaches for a long time. Phan Hải only feels safe because he believes that the position as the next leader of Phan Thị will be his no matter what. So, the moment Lê Thành appears and claims to be Phan Quân's long-lost son, Phan Hải's position is threatened and thus while his mother, Hồ Thu, is trying to assassinate Lê Thành, he himself is determined to prove his worth.
While in the beginning, Phan Hải retains his recklessness, he slowly becomes more competent as the time goes on, even wishing to establish a criminal empire separated from Phan Thị. He has to go with other women to find solace after being betrayed too many times. He also becomes more empathetic and gets exiled from the criminal underworld. He eventually finds a possible bright future for himself, meanwhile his half-brother Lê Thành becomes more unable to escape his criminal destiny. Still, this doesn't absolve his crimes, as he still ends the series being arrested by the cops alongside his surviving family.
Biography[]
Phan Hải is the son of Phan Quân, the leader of the Phan Thị Group, and the next in line to the role of leadership. He soon proves himself to be an incredibly reckless idiot who uses brute force to solve troubles and lacks academic intelligence. While Phan Quân bails his way out, he still has headaches with his son's tactics. One day, a young man named Lê Thành shows up and claims to be Phan Quân's long-lost son. Lê Thành's competence means that he is more than likely to succeed Phan Quân instead of Phan Hải, so Phan Hải's mother, Hồ Thu, plans to assassinate him to secure Phan Hải's inheritance right. Meanwhile, Phan Hải is determined to prove himself to be a capable leader, even planning to create his own criminal empire.
The moment Lê Thành shows up, a lot of people in Phan Thị suddenly betray Phan Quân and his family. Worse yet, "Boss-eyed" Thế, Phan Quân's rival and the leader of the Thiên Long Gang, has just recently been released from prison which intensifies the chaos. The stress causes Phan Hải to fall into the arms of other women to find solace. He soon becomes more competent, but at the same time more empathetic. No longer is he the ruthless criminal he used to be, now he realizes how bad the criminal underworld is and begins to distance himself from it. However, Thế then sets up fake ADN test paper to convince Lê Thành that he is his son, so Lê Thành begins to help Thế take down Phan Thị.
When Phan Hải and his wife, Diễm My, are celebrating his son's birthday, Phan Hưng, Bảo Ngậu reveals himself to be a cop sent to infiltrate Phan Thị and leads his comrades to take it down. After the chaos resulted by Trần Tú's bombs, the cops eventually arrest all the surviving members of Phan Thị, including Phan Hải himself.
