Phil Mitchell is a fictional character and primary protagonist of the BBC British soap opera EastEnders.

The character is portrayed by Steve McFadden.

Biography

Phil Mitchell is a criminal hardman born on 20th January 1961, conceived by his beloved mother Peggy and his abusive father Eric at the time. He was their eldest sibling when his brother Grant was born a year later, followed many years later by their youngest sister Sam.

He came to Albert Square, the market town of fictional East London borough Walford, in 20th February 1990 alongside his family and they steadily established themselves as the undisputed top-dogs. This was particularly the case in Phil's brotherhood with Grant, in which the two became household legends known as the "Mitchell Brothers" due to their thuggish reputation. But the brotherhood was put to a test when they contended for the love of established character Sharon Watts; she married Grant but had an affair with Phil in one of soaps' biggest storylines dubbed "Sharongate".

Since then Phil has been involved in the show's other highly-impactful storylines to date, which include a problematic relationship with Kathy Beale; a longstanding quarrel with his stepson Ian Beale; getting involved in numerous feuds and failed relationships; a lifelong battle with alcoholism; dealing with crack cocaine addiction; and suffering from loneliness and depression. In 2001, Phil was the titular subject of a gripping storyline dubbed "Who Shot Phil?" in which the culprit was later revealed to be his mistreated ex-girlfriend Lisa Shaw.
