Scarface One, commonly known as Phoenix, is a major character in the Ace Combat franchise, serving as the main protagonist of Air Combat and Ace Combat 2 (as well as the latter game's remake, Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy) and a minor character in several other games. He is the leader of a mercenary pilot unit called Scarface Squadron who is known to have played a crucial role in two conflicts on the Usean continent.
Biography[]
Skully Islands Insurgency (Air Combat)[]
In 1995, Scarface One and his squadron were hired by the Federation of Central Usea to combat the terrorists who had taken over the Skully Islands. He took part in multiple military missions, heavily crippling the terrorists' forces, and was ultimately the one to destroy their Sky Fortress, ending the conflict in favour of the islands' legitimate government.
Usean Coup d'Etat (Ace Combat 2/Assault Horizon Legacy)[]
In 1998, Usean Allied Forces once again hired Phoenix, this time to defeat the rebels who intented to take over the continent in opposition to the states' leaders signing a pact with Osea. Scarface Squadron fought the rebels all over the continent and secured many crucial victories for the Allied Forces, before finally corenering them at their makeshift capital of St. Ark. During an assualt on the city, Phoenix destroyed the rebels' headquarters. However, one of the rebels' submarines managed to escape and attempted to destroy the recaptured St. Ark with a cruise missile. Luckily, the mercenary shot the missile down in time.
It was discovered that several rebel officers managed to escape to Fortress Intolerance, from where they planned to launch an attack on Yuktobania in order to provoke a global war and escape in the ensuing chaos. When the Allied Forces attacked the fortress, Phoenix managed to fly his plane inside it and destroy the ballistic missile, causing a chain reaction that destroyed the rebels' last stronghold, putting an end to their plans.

Phoenix appears in a bonus mission, "Operation X", as one of the two final enemies alongside Zone of Endless, flying an XFA-27.

- Phoenix's signature aircraft models are Su-35, F-22A Raptor and XFA-27.
- Phoenix is one of the few playable Ace Combat protagonists to have a speaking role, when requesting assistance during the landing in Ace Combat 2.
- He is also one of the few playable characters to make a physical appearance, as he is seen briefly in the Assault Horizon Legacy intro.
