Pim Pimling is one of the two main protagonists (alongside Charlie Dompler) of the adult animated comedy series Smiling Friends.
He is a small, pink critter employed by Smiling Friends Inc., a company that seeks to bring joy to their clients. He, alongside his best friend Charlie, go on episodic adventures on behalf of their employer, Mr. Boss. He is portrayed as unwieldy enthusiastic about his job and stands a contrast to Charlie’s more grounded pessimism.
He is voiced by the series' co-creator, Michael Cusack, who also voices Allan Red in the same show.
Appearance[]
He is a short, pudgy humanoid with pink skin and a round head. His eyes are large and asymmetrical in size; the one closest to the viewer always appears larger. They also have big, scribbled pupils, and he has a small, exposed nerve ending that looks like a single hair. He usually wears a white button-up shirt, indigo pants, a black belt with a gold buckle, and black shoes.
Personality[]
Pim is commonly characterized as a slap-happy, overtly energetic, fun-loving, and optimistic critter, wholly dedicated to his job of cheering up his clients, about which he is exceptionally passionate. He also emotes frequently in his excitement by flailing his arms around and shouting, and likes to show gratitude by kissing people. Pim is somewhat naive, however, and can occasionally lack social understanding, hence his impulsive exclamation of "I LOVE KIDS!" in public during the pilot episode, with Charlie suggesting that it's perhaps not a good idea. Nevertheless, he is on great terms with his best friend Charlie, whom he supports in good humor despite their occasionally clashing mindsets, with Charlie often serving as a realistic contrast to Pim's unwavering idealism.
Pim is deeply empathetic and affable, almost always putting the well-being of others first (such as when he denies himself a relationship with Jennifer to make his client Shrimp happy). Pim is also a determinator who is extremely persistent in his goals and rarely wants to give up on an adventure or client, believing that everyone deserves a chance, and rare are the tasks that are impossible, even cheering up the nihilistic Desmond at the end of his rope. When not assisting clients, Pim is still eager to help outside of his typical duties, such as volunteering to fetch firewood for Mr. Boss's office Halloween party.
He tends to overlook the more cynical and darker aspects of life, making him seem innocent or even a bit gullible at times. He is uncomfortable discussing such topics, asking Charlie to change the subject of conversation when talking about a political assassination. Notwithstanding his general positivity, Pim is not beyond showing negative traits; in the episode "Enchanted Forest," his eagerness to experience fun and his desire for adventure caused friction between him and Charlie, and he became deeply jealous of Charlie for being hailed as a hero in the Enchanted Forest, turning into a spiteful and bitter husk of his former self. He can also engage in petty arguments or be slightly irritable at times, but he always snaps out of his rare negativity.
Unlike most of the characters in the series, Pim doesn't swear. The worst he's said in the series is "dammit," "fudge," and "Jesus Christ." Pim sometimes serves as a scapegoat for other characters, including when his eye insecurity is brought to attention by Oscar and (non-maliciously) Charlie, or when Mr. Frog assaults his head while he sings a cheerful song, with Mr. Boss later making fun of the resulting injury before realizing Pim was present in the room.

Trivia[]
- Pim is 33 years old.[1]
- A running gag in the show is that Pim will randomly give anyone and anything a kiss, such as Desmond and a bird. When he was younger, he once kissed his dad on the mouth, which made Charlie uncomfortable.
- "Shrimp's Odyssey" reveals his eyesight is somewhat poor, as he mistook a bowl of worms for a bowl of peanuts, and he read the address for Shrimpina's job wrong. He did wear glasses as a child, as seen in "Enchanted Forest".
- The "little hair" on Pim's head is actually an exposed nerve ending.
- In Gwimbly: Definitive Remastered Enhanced Extended Edition DX 4K (Anniversary Director’s Cut), Pim says that he had been playing Gwimbly's games "since [he] was a tadpole." Using the term tadpole is fairly popular to describe babies or kids in some parts of Pennsylvania.
- Pim was originally green, as revealed in the commentary of "Desmond's Big Day Out." This also inspired the gag title of "Pim Finally Turns Green," which doesn't actually happen in the episode.
