Hero Overview

I'm not a puppet. I'm a real boy!
~ Pinocchio's first line

Pinocchio is a supporting hero in the Shrek film franchise. He is one of Shrek and Donkey's best friends who used to be owned by his wood carving owner, Geppeto but his father gave him away to the banished fairy tale creatures who were forced to live in Shrek's swamp. Whenever he tells a lie, his wooden nose grows very long. And also he longs to be a real human boy but he just stays as a wooden puppet forever.

He was voiced by Cody Cameron who also voiced by Mr. Weenie from Open Season. In the Japanese dub from the movie, he was voiced Nobuo Tobita.

Overview[]

Pinocchio is a live wooden puppet who befriends Shrek. He cannot lie without having his nose growing very long, and he deeply dreams to become a real boy.

Appearances[]

Pinocchio wears his fancy outfit. He wears a yellow hat. He also wears white gloves, white short sleeve shirt with yellow buttons, blue shorts with suspenders, white socks, and red Mary Jane shoes. In Shrek 2, a real boy wears a yellow hat, white long sleeve shirt with yellow buttons, blue short dress, white tights, and red Mary Jane shoes.

Personality[]

Pinocchio is mostly well behaved, although can get extremely caught up in the moment. Sometimes giving snarky remarks or going on tangents. His excitement primarily stemmed from his dreams to become a real boy, which seemed to drive his entire personality. Overtime he got over this, becoming content with being a puppet. Although sometimes he would remain insecure over the idea of him not being "real."

History[]

Shrek[]

When Lord Farquaad banished all fairytale creatures from Duloc, Pinocchio is sold to Farquaad's men by his creator Geppetto. He tries to inform the guards that he's a "real boy," causing his nose to grow. The captain gives the toymaker five shillings for the "possessed toy," and is taken away while pleading for his father. He later ends up on Shrek's swamp with the rest of the fairytale creatures. In the ending, he is seen dancing at Shrek and Fiona's wedding.

Unlike later films where he has a fairly large role, he's a minor character with only about four lines.

Shrek 4-D[]

He appears in the queue on a wanted poster (much like the one from the first film). Pinocchio later makes a physical appearance in the pre-show, trapped in an iron maiden. He is threatened by the Ghost of Lord Farquaad to be turned into firewood if he didn't tell him about Shrek and Fiona's whereabouts.

Shrek 2[]

Prior to the movie, he becomes one of Shrek's best friends. Pinocchio, along with other fairytale characters are trusted to look after Shrek's house. For most of the film, they are eating buffalo wings and watching T.V. They then see Shrek, Donkey and Puss being taken to prison on the show K.N.I.G.T.S. He and the others help break them out. He is brought down by strings but gets tangled up while doing spy moves to impress. Gingy slides down and Shrek asks him to tell a lie so Gingy can walk on his nose and unlock the handcuffs. Donkey suggests that he says "I'm wearing ladies underwear!" He does, but this is true; therefore, his nose does not grow. Shrek asks him if he is, and Pinocchio says he's not, which is a lie.

When he tries to get the Fairy Godmother's wand, she zaps him with it and he turns into a real boy. As a result, he dances in celebration until the wand is passed to The Three Blind Mice, which transforms Pinocchio back into a puppet, much to his disappointment. He is later seen at the dance party performing dance moves inspired by Michael Jackson.

Shrek the Third[]

He is seen at Fiona's baby shower where he presents a baby carrier with Gingy inside. When confronted by Prince Charming on Shrek's whereabouts, Pinocchio told him a twisted up version of the truth while trying not to tell the truth but trying not to lie at the same time, something that confused everyone. He is later seen trapped inside a machine as a coin-operated puppet and tells the truth that he learns how to be exposed about Fiona and the others to Shrek but his curtain keeps falling down. He is later seen fighting Charming's army. At the really end, Donkey (who is in Puss In Boots' body) scratches Pinocchio's back with his sword.

It is also mentioned earlier in the film that he abandoned Stromboli's puppet show in order to find his father. This presumably left Stromboli broke, and he declared hatred towards the "little wooden puppet." These are one of several events that motivated the villains' attack on Far Far Away.

Shrek the Halls[]

Pinocchio joins Shrek and the others for Christmas at Shrek's swamp. He brings in a holiday cake and hangs a pantyhose stocking near the fireplace. During the party, he steals a slow dance with Fiona from Shrek, which irritates him. While slow dancing, Pinocchio screams the lyrics of "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey. After Shrek is accidentally caught on fire during the party, he tries to put out the fire with a bucket of water. This only causes Shrek to kick everyone out of his house. When everyone forgives each other for their behavior at the party, they all prepare a sleepover. Pinocchio tries to claim a spot, but is kicked by the Big Bad Wolf after he rambles for too long.

Shrek Forever After[]

Pinocchio first appears telling Rumpelstiltskin that he was going to have to pay for a library book because he was ripping it up. Rumpel then offers him a contract to become a real boy, Pinocchio quickly realizes it's a trick, kicks him out of the library, calling him "Grumple Stinkypants." He is later seen at the ogre triplets' birthday party at the Candy Apple. As part of the celebration, he sings "Birthday Bash" with an animatronic band.

In the alternate universe, he is next seen almost signing a contract with Rumpelstiltskin to become a real boy, but Shrek disrupts it because he is more important to talk to now. He is next seen trying to sell Geppetto (with a green-painted face) as Shrek to win the deal of a lifetime, but Rumpelstiltskin is not fooled. He is seen in the credits when one of Rumpelstiltskin's witches mistakes Pinocchio's long nose for a broomstick.

In a deleted scene, he is fighting alongside the other fairy tales against Shrek. Here he ties the ogre with his strings, and turns his head with an evil laugh while moving his eyes.

Scared Shrekless[]

Pinocchio celebrated Halloween with the fairytale creatures while trying to scare Shrek and his family. His first and only attempt was pretending to be hung with a noose. He claimed that he "worked hard" on his costume, which turns out to be a lie. He then went along with Shrek and the gang to Duloc for the scary story contest. When they settle in one of Farquaad's chambers, he insists that he tell the story of his time at the petting zoo. This is overthrown by Gingy, who then proceeds to tell his story. Pinocchio then appeared in the story "The Shrekorsist," where he is acting up in Geppetto's house. The wood carver soon calls Shrek in order to "babysit" Pinocchio. Later on, it's revealed that Jiminy Cricket went inside of Pinocchio's head and told Pinocchio to do crazy, outlandish things.

After Shrek finishes the story, Pinocchio nervously denies this, before Shrek shows him a real cricket, labeling it as his "conscience", and terrifies Pinocchio, leaving him running through the door, leaving a hole his shape.

Swamp Talk[]

Pinocchio was referenced several times in the series, with his most prominent mention being in "Shrek's 2016 Presidential Endorsement". He was going up against Fairy Godmother and Prince Charming for election as president of Far Far Away. His plan could be summed up with Shrek's insult, "I'm leaning to the left! I'm leaning to the right! Who's pulling my strings?"

Puss In Boots: The Last Wish[]

Pinocchio makes a brief a appearance in the film by dancing in front of his cart, getting the attention of a crowd. Unbeknownst to Pinocchio, he had accidentally caused Little Jack Horner to grow envious towards fairy tail creatures. In response to Pinocchio's performance, Little Jack Horner is confused as to why Pinocchio, despite not being a real boy, is more popular than him.

Trivia[]

  • In a skit in the Shrek Forever After soundtrack, he is granted a wish that everyday could be his birthday and it is granted.
  • Before the opening of Shrek 4-D, a teaser with various gags included a personal ad reading "Wanna go to Pleasure Island? Single wooden male seeks female who can really work my strings. You must like splinters. Try me, I'll grow on you... No lie!".
  • He appears to be good friends with Gingy, whom he has a similar voice to (although Pinocchio has a more raspy voice).
  • During the escape in Shrek 2, it's revealed that he wears ladies' thongs. Similarly, in Shrek the Halls, he is shown to have a lingerie sock as his Christmas sock. This makes this version of Pinocchio the only one to be a crossdresser.
  • He is the only character in the franchise to be portrayed by a Muppet performer; albeit only in Shrek the Musical.
  • Inadvertently, Pinocchio is somewhat responsible for the events of two films in the series: in Shrek Forever After, Pinocchio accidentally sets Rumpelstiltskin's vengeful plot against Shrek into motion by rudely kicking Rumpel out from the library and mocking him for his contracts, which leads the already angry Rumpel to seek Shrek to get back at him for ruining his scheme in taking over Far Far Away. In Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, it's shown that years before the first Shrek film, Pinocchio made a living by acting as a street performer, unknowingly driving potential audiences away from Little Jack Horner, leading a jealous Jack to grow up into a fairy tale creature-hating mob boss who desired to get the Last Wish to have all the magic in the world for himself.
