These paperclips are absolutely perfect for tinkering with any machine I've come across. By the way, I'm not a flashback, I actually died. Like, not long after you left my store. Anyways, I should be getting back to Hell now.
~ Plilford reminding Allan about the usefulness of his paperclips.

Plilford is a minor character in Smiling Friends who makes his only appearance in the episode "A Allan Adventure." He was the owner-operator of Plilford's Electro Shack, located in the neighborhood of Crimeville, before he died from an unknown cause and was sent to Hell.

He is voiced by series' co-creator Zach Hadel, who also voices Charlie, Glep, Charlie's grandmother, Gwimbly, Century Egg, and the Homunculus in the same show.

Appearance[]

He is an elderly critter with a spindly, curvy nose and a large, amorphous, saggy head with numerous fat-rolls and wrinkles. He has thin arms and hands with four fingers each. He has no teeth, a large, cavernous mouth. and two eyes atop his head

He wears glasses, a loose white shirt, brown pants, and a black belt with a gold buckle.

Personality[]

Plilford is a gentle and benevolent individual who enjoys tinkering with different electronic equipment and running his repair shop. He is very generous and grateful, as shown when he gives Allan a box of paperclips after Allan’s suggestion helps him, ecstatic upon discovering the usefulness of his nose as a replacement for his paperclips. Plilford later returns as a ghost to help Allan defeat Mr. Landlord and deactivate his bomb, reminding Allan that paperclips can be used to tinker with electronics. He is somewhat paranoid, begging for mercy when Allan first enters his store, fearing a robbery—a reasonable reaction given that his store is in the aptly-named, dysfunctional neighborhood of Crimeville. However, he gives a friendly chuckle when Allan clarifies that he means no harm.

Given that Plilford is sentenced to Hell after he died, it suggests he may have committed some bad acts during his life. However, given the setting's tendency to condemn people for minor infractions, he may not have actually deserved this punishment.

Biography[]

Allan, in search of paperclips, enters Plilford's Electro Shack, located in Crimeville. After he enters, Plilford, the owner, mistakes him for a robber. Once Allan clarifies that he just wants to buy a box of paperclips, Plilford apologizes and refuses to sell them to Allan, as he only has one box left and needs them for tinkering with his electronics.

Upon Allan's suggestion that he uses his long, crooked nose instead, which resembles the exact shape of his beloved paperclips, this blows his mind, and in gratitude, he gives Allan his box of paperclips for free.

When Allan is forced to hang out with Mr. Landlord under the threat of a bomb, Plilford appears to Allan as if he is a flashback, reminding him that paperclips are useful for tinkering with electronics. This allows Allan to disable his landlord's explosive vest. However, Plilford reveals that he is not a flashback but a ghost, having died not long after Allan left his store and returned to help him. He is then dragged down to Hell immediately after.
