“ | Apologies, Rex. All is well. I am lost... no longer. | „ |
~ Pneuma revealing herself to Rex. |
“ | Rex... I'm so glad to have met you. Our time together was short, a fraction of my long, long years. But it's been warmer and brighter... than any time I can remember before. You shone a light on my melancholy path. You showed me the way. Thank you for that, Rex. Thank you for that gift of light. | „ |
~ Pneuma thanking Rex for having a presence in her life. |
Pneuma is the deuteragonist in Xenoblade Chronicles 2. She is one of the three Aegis Core Crystals of the Trinity Processor, alongside Logos and Ontos, and is the true form of the Aegis at its full power. Likewise, she is the ascended form of both Pyra and Mythra.
She is voiced by Shino Shimoji and Skye Bennett in the Japanese and English versions of the game.
Appearance[]
Pneuma has light-green hair, that is tied into a ponytail. Likewise, she has a core on her chest, that has her codename below it. Pneuma dons bluish green parts on her armor.
History[]
Pneuma was originally created by the Architect as one of the three Core Crystals of the Trinity Processor with Ontos and Logos, in the process of creating Alrest. The three were tasked with gathering data on Blades and distributing them to the Architect, so that he could learn more on how to shape the world effectively. When Ontos transported himself to a different world, the Architect was left Logos and Pneuma.
Pneuma and Logos remained dormant until the World Tree was climbed by Amalthus, who stole Pneuma and Logos from Klaus and awoke Logos, renaming him Malos and causing Malos to essentially be corrupted by Amalthus' hatred of humanity and genocidal intents to wipe them out. Initially acting as if he wanted to stop Malos, Amalthus searched for someone to awaken Pneuma, and found him in Addam, a member of royal blood from the Kingdom of Torna, who awoke Pneuma as Mythra and became her driver.
When the Aegis War broke out, Mythra was able to defeat Malos, but at the cost of nearly losing herself in a berserker state induced by grief and rage that allowed her to summon Pneuma's Aegis Sword, but Addam, due to his imperfect bond with her, could not handle the sword's power, electrocuting him, even after Mythra took the sword from him. However, Mythra's victory came at a heavy cost: The Torna Titan and Kingdom of Torna were destroyed, Mor Ardain Emperor Hugo died protecting Addam from the Titan's Core Crystal shattering, and Mythra, horrified by what she had caused, sealed herself away in hopes of her powers never being awoken again, creating her sister Pyra in her stead, whom Addam had sealed away in an ancient Torna warship and sunk beneath the Cloud Sea until such a time when her power would be needed again to save Alrest from Malos and Amalthus.
500 years later, the warship is salvaged by the Torna terrorist group, where the Leftherian salvager they hired for the job, Rex, awakens Pyra, but is swiftly slain by Jin moments later, only to be revived when Pyra shares half of her Core Crystal with Rex to help keep him alive until his fatal injuries were healed by the Core Crystal's energy. Pyra becomes Rex's Blade for his journey to stop the Torna group and Amalthus from their plans for the World Tree and Alrest. When the mercenary Driver Vandham sacrifices himself to give Rex a chance to escape from Malos and his co-agent Akhos, only for Rex to refuse, Pyra is forced to break Mythra's seal and awaken her to save Rex's life.
Later, after Pyra surrenders to Jin to save Rex and the others, Malos drains her of her energy to restore his own Core Crystal and Aegis powers, leaving her a lifeless husk. When Rex arrives to rescue them, Pyra and Mythra plead for him to leave them behind, as they wished to return to Elysium and the Architect to die, but when Rex accepts to take on Pyra and Mythra's burdens as his own, he is granted the power as a Master Driver, and awakens Pneuma in her true form, as his bond with her was perfect compared to Addam's. With Pneuma's power behind him, Rex is able to climb the World Tree, after Jin sacrifices himself to slay Amalthus, and face down Malos after he took control of the ultimate Artifice, Aion.
Rex and Pneuma deliver a powerful strike that not only cripples Aion, but mortally wounds Malos as well, who shares some final words of regret with Rex before finally dying. Klaus dies as well, shutting down the Conduit, and the World Tree threatens to fall on Alrest. Pneuma directs the group to what she says is a control room to prevent Rhadamanthus from collapsing on Alrest, but she lied to them. She sent them to the escape pods as she intends to commit suicide with using Aion's self-destruct to destroy Rhadamanthus and save Alrest. Rex tries to go back and join her, but Pneuma won't allow it, transferring the rest of her Core Crystal to Rex, returning him to his normal salvager outfit, and revealing that his fatal wounds were now fully healed, so he no longer needed to rely on the Core Crystal to keep him alive. Despite every attempt to go back to her, Rex finally accepts Pneuma's decision, and escapes with the rest of the group. Pneuma returns to Aion, climbs aboard, and activates its self-destruct. As Aion is about to blow, Malos/Logos speaks to her one more time, asking her how it felt to be alive, and after Pneuma replies, she accepts her fate as Aion blows and destroys Rhadamanthus.
However, as a final gift from Klaus, her Core Crystal, which Rex still possessed, is able to awaken again, and revive Pyra and Mythra in separate bodies to reunite with Rex and the others, granting them a new life in the new world Klaus gave to humanity with his final breath.
Relationships[]
Pyra and Mythra[]
Pneuma respects her sisters Pyra and Mythra, and she especially describes Pyra and Mythra as sweethearts and Pneuma additionally calls Pyra and Mythra her best friends. The girls also share the same boyfriend (Rex) and never get into an argument. They have been a trio for a long time.
