Pochita is the titular overarching protagonist in the Chainsaw Man franchise. He is Denji's best friend that has been with him since his childhood and would later on make a contract with him, in exchange for "showing him his dreams".
He is later revealed to be the most feared Devil in Hell known as the Chainsaw Devil, the devil who embodies the fear of chainsaws.
He was voiced Shiori Izawa in Japanese and Lindsay Seidel in English. The former also provided the voice of Matsuri Mizusawa from Citrus, while the latter also provided the voices of Desumi Magahara from Love After World Domination, Fiona Frost from Spy x Family, Nejire Hado from My Hero Academia, Gabi Braun from Attack on Titan, Eris Boreas Greyrat from Mushoku Tensei, Nagisa Shiota from Assassination Classroom, and Maya Fey from Ace Attorney.
Appearance[]
In his true form, the Chainsaw Man is a brutish and large muscular demon with four arms and black scales/spikes all over his body. His head is shaped like a chainsaw with horns and is mostly featureless, save for a mouth full of sharp teeth. The Chainsaw Man has four arms, each one with a chainsaw coming out of it. He also has an intestine-like organ that comes out of his chest and goes around his neck like a scarf.
In his weakened form, Pochita is an orange dog-like creature of small stature. He has a chainsaw that comes out of his face, where his snout would be and also has handles on his head and rear end, which Denji holds whenever he's using him as a weapon. His tail is also shaped like a chainsaw ripcord which, when pulled, activates his chainsaw snout.
After becoming Denji's heart, Pochita turns into an orange, heart-shaped organ that has the chainsaw ripcord coming out of its "head". He maintains the exact same face he had on his "dog" form, albeit without the chainsaw snout.
When disguising himself as Denji in his final fight against Makima, Pochita looks almost exactly like Denji when he's in his hybrid form, even sporting the same Devil Hunter suit. As a key difference, however, his arms have a more scaly and devil-like appearance, instead of the regular human arms Denji has in this form.
History[]
Background[]
Pochita was the Chainsaw Devil and the "Hero of Hell". For years, he had slayed devils who called upon him by hugging them, while devouring and erasing several devils from existence such as the Nazi Devil, AIDS Devil, Arnolone Syndrome Devil, Nuclear Weapons Devil, the star that broke children's minds devil, the sixth sense devil etc., an ability which other devils like Makima, the Control Devil, and the Darkness Devil wished to use for their own ends. At some point, he would fight the Four Horsemen and the Weapon Devils, being gravely injured in the process, but managing to escape.
Pochita would soon meet Denji as a child who would nurse him back to health for the price of a contract in which he would give him his blood in exchange for protecting him. The two became best friends, working together as private Devil Hunters for the yakuza. During these times, Pochita would listen to Denji's dreams and ambitions, like eating a burger, having a decent home/job, and getting laid.
Chainsaw Man[]
After the yakuza killed Denji, Pochita formed a contract with him to make him the Chainsaw Man, with Pochita becoming Denji's heart. Pochita has since only appeared in flashbacks, and in Denji's mind telling him not to open a door in his mind. Makima was a fan of Pochita, and orchestrated the events that would psychologically break Denji in order to release him. She succeeded in breaking Denji's will to live, and unleashed Pochita in his true devil form as the Hero of Hell. After defeating dismembering Makima, Pochita, recalling Denji's desire to eat hamburgers, coincidentally ends up encountering Kobeni at a fast food restaurant. Pochita, now weakened due to Makima making the public fear him less, is easily defeated by Makima while sacrificing himself to save Kobeni.
Powers and abilities[]
Erasing and altering history[]
Pochita has the special ability to eat and erase any devil, and their associated sources of fear from existence (practically conceptual erasure). Pochita has consumed and erased the devils of real-world historical evils including the Nazis, World War II, the Holocaust, AIDS, nuclear weapons, as well as fictional concepts like a star whose light broke children's minds, the human sixth sense, four possible conclusions to life other than death, Arnolone Syndrome, SOA and the Mount Hio eruption. Since Pochita erased such devils from history, most of the characters become unaware that such things and events once existed, with only powerful devils like the Four Horsemen able to recall their existence.
When Pochita erased the Ear Devil, according to Yoru and Katana Man's interactions, Yoru could sense something going away as the others could not realize what happened.
Weaknesses[]
Like the other devils, Pochita's strength as the Chainsaw Devil corresponds with how feared he is by humanity. Makima initiates a propaganda campaign that casts Pochita as a heroic and benevolent figure in the eyes of the public, which consequently and severely weakens his power and vitality.
