This life is amazing when you greet It with open arms!
~ Polites' philosophy on life.

Polites is the overarching protagonist of EPIC: The Musical. A Greek soldier, he was one of Odysseus' closest friends since they were young. Preferring to be kind over opening with violence, he tries to encourage his friend to do the same.

He was voiced by Steven Dookie.

Biography[]

Polites was a close friend of Odysseus in childhood, once being protected from a boar sent by Athena by him. Growing up, he soon became a Greek soldier, and fought in the Trojan War amongst Odysseus' men. Soon defeating the Trojans with the Trojan Horse, Polites joined the other 600 men in sailing back to Ithaca. However, Eurylochus soon finds their food supply is running low. Thinking quickly, Polites suggests sailing to a nearby island and seeing if they have any to spare. Odysseus accompanies Polites to the island, upon which Polites tries to convince him to become kinder and more moral, attempting to lead by example by asking the Lotus Eaters for food. When they are given the Lotus, Odysseus quickly ascertains the fruit to not be safe for consumption due to it's mind-controlling effects. Polites, still trying to prove kindness is brave, asks the Lotus Eaters where they can find more food, and learns they can find a cave filled with food by sailing east.

Sailing with the rest of the crew, Polites heads in the cave in a small group, finding enough sheep to feed their large crew. As a few sheep are killed, Polyphemus appears, asking who they are, but soon finding out they killed his favorite sheep. Furious, he accuses them of being thieves and plans to kill them. Odysseus offers him what he claims is the world's best-tasting wine (Lotus hidden inside), and Polyphemus, finding it delicious, announces Odysseus will be the final man to die, before trying to kill all 600 men in Odysseus' crew. Fighting the cyclops, they seem to be winning initially, until suddenly, Polyphemus draws a club, killing several men with it, including Polites. Polites calls out to Odysseus one last time before dying, much to his distress.

After his death, he still is felt within the story. His death influences Odysseus to attempt to be more peaceful, although he does for the most part abandon this after going through the Underworld. Within the Underworld, Odysseus finds Polites, revealing his final thoughts were of greeting the world with open arms and kindness in spite of everything. Later, on Calypso's island, he can be heard as a voice in Odysseus's mind, alongside Eurlyochus and his mother. After Poseidon nearly kills Odysseus, Polites is one of the spirits of people Odysseus has lost he can see under the water.
