"Four to a tray — there is a large supply of pots here — compost in the sacks over there — and be careful of the Venomous Tentacula, it's teething."
~ Professor Sprout teaching.

Pomona Sprout is a minor character in the Harry Potter series. Sprout is the short and plump professor of Herbology and Head of Hufflepuff House, Sprout doesn't mind getting dirty when dealing with dangerous plants. Like Flitwick, she is cheerful and fair to her students. Not a member of the Order, but loyal to Dumbledore even through Umbridge's reign and she played a significant role in the Battle of Hogwarts.

In the movies she was portrayed by Miriam Margolyes.

Biography[]

She attended the school in her youth, where she was Sorted into Hufflepuff and excelled at Herbology. Some time after her graduation, Sprout returned to Hogwarts to teach.

In 1993, Professor Sprout grew the Mandrakes that would later be used in the Mandrake Restorative Draught to cure those who were petrified by Slytherin's Monster. She also opposed Dolores Umbridge and her tyranny over the school in the 1995–1996 school year, which the rest of the staff were happy to join her in doing.

Sprout opposed Lord Voldemort during the Second Wizarding War. She voted for the school to remain open after the Battle of the Astronomy Tower, and assisted in ousting Severus Snape in 1998. She later took a group of students to the battlements during the Battle of Hogwarts and threw Devil's Snare and various other dangerous plants onto the invading Death Eaters.

Trivia[]

  • While Professor Sprout appeared in all seven books, Professor Sprout only appeared in the second and eight film. She was only a mentioned character in the fourth and sixth movie.
    • As the Head of Hufflepuff House, she's the only House head of Hogwarts to not appear in all movies. The heads of Gryffindor, Ravenclaw and Slytherin (McGonagall, Flitwick, and Snape) appear in all movies (without counting Slughorn, who replaces Snape as the Head of Slytherin from the end of the sixth movie onward).
