♪ Poppy Rangers have no fear, kind to every bird and deer! ♪
~ Lyrics of the Poppy Rangers' theme song.
Five, six, seven, eight! Mr. Bear, we think you're great! One, two! Three, four! You can do it! Beat their score! We're the Poppy Rangers, and we're here to say... We're so glad that bears can play!
~ The Poppy Rangers' cheerleading.
Sir, yes, sir!
~ The Poppy Rangers when following Ranger Tabes and Grizz Bear's commands.

The Poppy Rangers are major characters of the We Bare Bears franchise, being supporting characters in the 2015 Cartoon Network original series of the same name, and its 2020 series finale film adaption, We Bare Bears: The Movie.

The Poppy Rangers are a group of brave and adventurous little girl scouts/troops and rangers, consisting of Diaz, Parker, Nguyen, Murphy and the leader, Wallace, who have a close friendship with Ranger Tabes and the bears, more especially Grizzly, whom the girls adore and affectionately refer him as, "Bear Guy," even despite Grizz's incompetence and his notable flaws within his heroism. Outside of their careers as park rangers like Ranger Tabes, the Poppy Rangers are typically seen casually playing with each other and having fun, more especially by throwing tissues at each other, having pillow fights and/or flying kites. Additionally, the Poppy Rangers also participate in the annual Peewee Ranger Games led by Ranger Martinez, more especially to defeat their arch-rivals, the Ivy Rangers.

Wallace is voiced by Cate Gragnani, Parker is voiced by Danity Harris, Diaz is voiced by Marissa Soto, Ngyuen is voiced by Audrey Huynh (who also voices Stella Cho from XO, Kitty, Kim Jun-hee in the English dub of Squid Game, and the Namashitas from The Boss Baby: Back in Business), and Murphy is voiced by Stella Balick-Karrer.

History[]

Diaz, the curious and witty biologist! Parker, the quiet and confident aeronautical engineer! Murphy, the cheerful and patient geologist! Nguyen, the quiet and confident dancer! And Wallace, the fearless and born park ranger leader!
~ Description for each Poppy Ranger's character portrait.

Prior to the events of We Bare Bears, the Poppies started their lives off as simple school students and traditional citizens. That is, however, until the Poppies had developed a pure friendship and bond upon their first interaction with each other. Throughout the early timeline of the Poppies' childhood, the five girls were raised by their respective unidentified parents and spent most of their early childhood hanging out and playing with the other Poppies, as well as flying kites and exploring, along with participating in the annual Peewee Ranger Games to defeat their arch-rival counterparts, the Ivy Rangers, the Poppies' bullies. Each Poppy Ranger desires to grow up to attain their respective future occupations: Wallace aspires to be a park/forest ranger, like Ranger Tabes, as she shows pure passion and experience in nature, like Tabes does; Diaz aspires to be a biologist as she is purely experienced and sophisticated in analyzing animals and life on Earth; Parker aspires to be an aeronautical engineer as she is purely experienced and sophisticated in certain aircrafts, such as airplanes and rockets; Nguyen aspires to be a principal dancing as she is purely experienced and skilled in dancing, and shows pure passion with music and atmosphere; at last, Murphy aspires to be a geologist as she is purely experienced and sophisticated in geography.

Upon first meeting Dana Tabes, the Poppies immediately saw Tabes as a mother-like figure and have shown high commitment towards her, and the five girls have relentlessly put their best efforts to attain all of the Poppy Badges possible from Ranger Tabes by succeeding several missions and objectives, even through severe risks. Years after the five girls were dedicated to working with Ranger Tabes to attain badges, the five girls were officialized as the Poppy Rangers, before the Poppies meet Grizz and his brothers.

Appearance[]

The Poppy Rangers are drawn with physical traits that make them excessively adorable girl scouts. The quintet wear their "Poppy Ranger" uniforms, consisting of a light-moss green, short-sleeved shirt, overlaid with a yellow bandanna around the collar with a single olive stripe across the middle, which shows all of the Poppy Badges the girls have been rewarded by Ranger Tabes. As well, this uniform includes green-toned khaki shorts, tennis shoes of the same color, and tube socks underneath. Over-top the entire outfit is a dark green sash. The five girls have somewhat large eyes, circle-shaped heads (or in the case of Nguyen and Parker, oval-shaped), relatively stubby arms and legs, and ironically have four fingers instead of the traditional five. Although the quintet are heroines, the Poppy Rangers greatly resemble seemingly harmless little girl scouts.

In the annual Peewee Ranger Games, the Poppies wear "Peewee Ranger" uniforms consisting of orange shirts with numbers on them (although the torso of Wallace's shirt is white, and Diaz's sleeves are white as well), along with wearing red shorts and orange caps. Another interesting fact is that Diaz's white socks have orange stripes on top of them and Nguyen has white wristbands. Meanwhile, Parker and Diaz's uniforms are overlaid with red stripes around the outer sections, while Diaz and Nguyen have eye blacks.

Personality[]

The Poppy Rangers are shown to be kindhearted, amazonic, affable, selfless, harmonizing, brave, and adventurous girl scouts, typically listening to their superior Ranger Tabes and Grizz Bear in both of their commands, even if severe danger awaits within them. Furthermore, the Poppy Rangers show high loyalty, demonstrated by them working as an excellent heroic team, the other Poppy Rangers saving Wallace from Hurricane Hal and assisting the three bears into defeating Agent Trout, their arch-nemesis, and leading to the latter's deserved incarceration. The Poppy Rangers' bond with Ranger Tabes and Grizz is so pure to the point that the girls perceive them as possible "family figures," seeing Grizz as a father-like figure and Tabes as a mother-like figure to them.

The aforementioned valor and commitment between the Poppy Rangers does not last long, however, demonstrated when Wallace yells out for help and in fear when the hurricane blew her kite out of her hands and almost blew her away as well, and when the other Poppy Rangers scream in fear and embrace Grizz Bear for safety when thunder strikes, heavily implying that the Poppy Rangers have pure fear against storms, such as the Hurricane Hal. Additionally, in the episode, Lord of the Poppies, as Grizz's incompetence hits the last straw of the Poppy Rangers' patience, the Poppy Rangers eventually succumb to hunger and insanity, to the point that the girls decide to devour Grizz and turn against him, which references how Panda Bear and Ice Bear became primal animals in the episode, Primal. Not only that, the Poppy Rangers also seem to crave deeply for leadership, demonstrated when Grizz accidentally causes the Poppy Rangers to begin a "Ranger War," turning against and brutally fighting each other for the guidebook, which Wallace stole from Grizz upon kidnapping and entrapping him to cook him for food, which is due to Grizz's "shoulder angels."

Even with their kindhearted dispositions, the Poppies are still passionate enough to argue and bicker with each other from time to time, but are especially blunt towards Grizz's incompetence, with Wallace and Nguyen having the least patience towards Grizz's incompetence, the former even going as far as bragging about Grizz's incompetence with achieving the recent badges and questioning how he managed to start a fire underwater, and the Poppy Rangers were even dismissive of Grizz and his lack of skill in the annual Peewee Ranger Games. Nonetheless, the Poppies still show high loyalty and affection towards Grizz regardless of his flaws, going as far as motivating and encouraging him to defeat the Ivy Rangers, and feels remorseful of dismissing Grizz and his initial lack of skill in the annual game, more especially through cheerleading, in which Grizz reforms his incompetence because of this.

Along with the Ranger War, the Poppy Rangers are also shown to be lethal, shown when the Poppy Rangers were about to eat Grizz out of appetite and starvation before Tabes shows up with pizza, despite being initially reluctant about it, but this was due to Grizz's incompetence.

In spite of these aforementioned flaws, the Poppies are still merciful and show ultimate forgiveness. After Agent Trout's deserved incarceration and the events of We Bare Bears: The Movie, the Poppies gratefully reunite with Grizz (along with Panda and Ice Bear) and continue to have a pure friendship with him, even despite all of the chaotic scenarios Grizz had driven them through, such as the events of Lord of the Poppies.

Wallace[]

Wallace Poppy Ranger

Wallace.

Wallace is the leader of the Poppy Rangers, despite being the shortest of the rangers in terms of height. Wallace is tomboyish, rather short and pudgy, yet quite strong. She has short, blonde hair stylized into a bowl-cut. Over her missing left eye is a dark brown eye-patch. Wallace's "Poppy Ranger" outfit consists of a light moss-green short-sleeve shirt, overlaid with a yellow bandanna around the collar with a single olive stripe across the middle. As well, this includes green-toned khaki shorts, tennis shoes of the same color and tube socks underneath. Over-top the entire outfit is a dark green sash.

Like her scout leader, Ranger Tabes, Wallace strives to be a great park ranger. Similar to Ice Bear, Wallace is shown to be the most capable in several methods and scenarios thanks to her sheer valor and hyperawareness, as well as her skill in kickball. As such, Wallace has the combination of being the strongest, the cleverest and the most reliable of the Poppy Rangers, but is not the most mature despite being the leader. Not only is she a genius and strong leader, she is also essential and virtually resourceful to the Poppy Rangers' childhood and teamwork. Wallace is described as a "fearless and born" leader in her character portrait, but Wallace is ironically afraid of thunderstorms and heights, shown in Hurricane Hal.

Diaz[]

Diaz Poppy Ranger

Diaz.

Diaz has a brown skin complexion and curly, shoulder-length black hair held back by a Reseda green headband that matches her uniform colors. She is typically seen wearing her "Poppy Ranger" uniform, which consists of a light-moss green, short-sleeved shirt, overlaid with a yellow bandanna around the collar with a single olive stripe across the middle. As well, this includes green-toned khaki shorts, tennis shoes of the same color, and tube socks underneath. Over-top the entire outfit is a dark green sash.

As she aspires to be a biologist when she grows up, she is well-versed in subjects pertaining to animals and wildlife. She is quick to make observations, even ones that would be hard to point out. Diaz is described as "curious and witty" in her character portrait. Thus, Diaz is described as more curious and entertaining, meaning that she is prone to asking too much questions and/or dwells in seeking for truth, but has a high sense of humor.

Nguyen[]

Nguyen Poppy Ranger

Nguyen.

Nguyen bears a light olive complexion. She's quite tall and has a slender build. Her long, black hair is pulled back into a ponytail and light brown streaks can be seen throughout. She is also of Vietnamese ancestry, but is unrevealed. Nguyen's "Poppy Ranger" outfit consists of a light-moss green short-sleeve shirt, overlaid with a yellow bandanna around the collar with a single olive stripe across the middle. As well, this includes green-toned khaki shorts, tennis shoes of the same color and tube socks underneath. Over top the entire outfit is a dark green sash.

Being a skilled dancer, Nguyen's future job is to be a principal dancer, but like Parker, she is described as "quiet and confident."

Parker[]

Parker Poppy Ranger

Parker.

Parker is rather tall and quite thin, and has a black complexion, in contrast to the other Poppies. Her hair is pulled up into two Afro-proportioned puffs on either side of her head. Parker's "Poppy Ranger" outfit consists of a light-moss green short-sleeve shirt, overlaid with a yellow bandanna around the collar with a single olive stripe across the middle. As well, this includes green-toned khaki shorts, tennis shoes of the same color, and tube socks underneath. Over-top the entire outfit is a dark green sash.

Parker aspires to be an aeronautical engineer when she grows up, but like Nguyen, she is described as "quiet and confident." However, Parker seems to be the most patient and affectionate towards Grizz, similar to Murphy, in contrast to Nguyen, who has the least amount of patience with Grizz's incompetence.

Murphy[]

Murphy Poppy Ranger

Murphy.

Murphy is slightly chubby and is about the average size for children her age. She has short, shoulder-length straight hair that has a coffee brown coloration and is typically pulled behind her ears. Murphy's "Poppy Ranger" outfit consists of a light-moss green short-sleeve shirt, overlaid with a yellow bandanna around the collar with a single olive stripe across the middle. As well, this includes green-toned khaki shorts, tennis shoes of the same color, and tube socks underneath. Over-top the entire outfit is a dark green sash.

Murphy aspires to be a geologist when she grows up. Murphy is described as "cheerful and patient" in her character portrait. To further contribute this, Murphy seems to have the least amount of grudge against Grizz Bear's incompetence in his heroism out of the Poppy Rangers. Furthermore, Murphy is more enthusiastic and optimistic in comparison to the other Poppy Rangers, and seems to offer the most amount of reassurance and motivation to Grizz out of the rest of the Poppies.

Trivia[]

  • "Poppy" symbolically defines success and good fortune.
  • The Poppy Rangers are the second major We Bare Bears characters to be kids, the first being Chloe Park.
  • The Poppy Rangers are the second notable We Bare Bears characters to work as a team, the first being the Bears, the titular main protagonists of said franchise.
  • The Poppy Rangers, Grizz and Ranger Tabes are the only characters in the We Bare Bears series to have character portraits.
  • The specific numbers on the Poppy Rangers' "Peewee Ranger" uniforms connect to how the Poppies announce their names in order while introducing themselves (Diaz, Parker, Murphy, Nguyen and Wallace), albeit in reversed order, while Diaz and Murphy's numbers are ironically switched.
  • The Poppy Rangers have never had an interaction with Panda Bear and Ice Bear, but would still show an affable and kindhearted disposition towards them nonetheless if they did interact with them.
  • Each Poppy Ranger is described in terms of personality by their own character portraits: Diaz is described as "curious and witty," both Parker and Nguyen are described as "quiet and confident," Murphy is described as "cheerful and patient," and Wallace is described as a "fearless and a born leader." However, there are several moments in We Bare Bears that cause the Poppy Rangers to not follow these respective and aforementioned personalities (Wallace is afraid of heights, and she and the other Poppy Rangers are afraid of thunderstorms and dark caves, etc).
  • Nguyen's name is the foreign method of writing Nguyễn, which is the most common surname in Vietnam.
  • Murphy wields a backpack, like Grizz, which has a symbol of a poppy behind it, symbolizing the Poppies as a team. While Grizz's backpack is yellow, Murphy's backpack is red, referencing how a red poppy is a symbol of both remembrance and hope for a peaceful future.
  • The Poppy Rangers becoming insane from hunger and turning against Grizz Bear in Lord of the Poppies is similar to how Panda and Ice Bear became primal and turned against each other and Grizz in the episode, Primal. Not only this, the episode, Lord of the Poppies, where the girls turn primal is a direct reference to the novel, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, where a similar group of young children turn against each other while stranded on an island.
  • The Poppy Rangers referring Grizz as "Bear Guy" references the three bears' philanthropic perspective of the human race in the We Bare Bears series, despite them being anthropomorphic animals.
  • The relationship between the Poppies and the Ivy Rangers strongly resembles the relationship between the Rowdyruff Boys and the Powerpuff Girls: the Ivies share the same traits from the Rowdyruff Boys (being juvenile, egotistical, spoiled and dimwitted), while the Poppies share the same traits from the Powerpuff Girls (being sweet, selfless, benevolent, intelligent, level-headed and polite).
  • Interestingly, the Poppy Rangers share traits of personality and characteristics from each of the Bears: Wallace demonstrates leadership (Grizz), Nguyen and Murphy show high intelligence and hyperawareness (Ice Bear), and the rest of the girls are both paranoid and wrathful (Panda Bear). Additionally, the Poppy Rangers are even as young as the Baby Bears and/or Chloe Park.
  • In Lord of the Poppies, the Poppy Rangers arrive at the same island the Baby Bears ended up in the episode, The Island, and met up with Karla and Dave. In this instance, the Poppies and Grizz would have potentially encountered Dave as a recurring antagonist in the episode if it was not for him running out of resources upon Karla and the Baby Bears' escape from him and the island, but since he eventually ran out of resources while being stranded in the island, Dave likely died from starvation as the three bears grew up.
