Poseidon is a supporting character in roguelike video game Hades and its sequel Hades II by Supergiant Games.
He is the Olympian God of the Sea, one of Hades' younger brothers (along with Zeus) and the paternal uncle of Zagreus and Melinoƫ.
He was voiced by Logan Cunningham, who also voiced Hades and others in the same game.
Biography[]
Past[]
Poseidon was the second born son of the Titans, Chronos and Rhea and thus their middle child. He and his brothers would soon overthrow their father, with the help of Hestia, Demeter and Hera, after suffering a lifetime of abuse. After cutting him to pieces and banishing him to Tartarus, he and his brothers would drew lots to divide their territory. Zeus got the sky (and kingship), while Poseidon got the sea and Hades the Underworld.
Poseidon would later be associated with many heroes and monsters, particularly Theseus and Polyphemus, who would mistake him as their father. In Theseus' case, Zeus knew Poseidon had a particular distaste for the young demigod, so he spread rumors that Poseidon was his father to spite him, while Poseidon himself tricked the Cyclops Polyphemus into believing he was his father as merely a prank, although he still took revenge on Odysseus for blinding him, causing the King of Ithaca great fear of the Sea God.
Hades I[]
Poseidon learns he has a nephew from Hades (he already has many nephews from Zeus), Zagreus. Poseidon offers boons to him so he can escape his father and visit Olympus. Poseidon is later invited to a feast in the Underworld hosted by his brother Hades, along with Hades' wife and son, Persephone and Zagreus and is present to Hades reconciliation with Zeus. There, he and his fellow Olympians are told a lie by the Underworld royal family and the King of Olympus himself, but it's implied only he fully believed it due to his complete and utter idiocy.
Hades II[]
After his father Chronos' return, Poseidon helps Hades' daughter Melinoƫ save her family by giving her boons.
Personality[]
Poseidon is the dimwitted, but well meaning uncle of Zagreus and Melinoƫ. He is known for his simple minded, fun loving nature which often annoys the other Olympians, who seem to despise him. While Poseidon can also be quite boastful, he is nowhere near Zeus' narcissism. When angered, Poseidon can be very vengeful towards mortals and cause floods and earthquakes when they invoke his wrath. As the god of the sea, his mood swings are unpredictable. For all his power, he is no match for his younger brother Zeus, who he seems to constantly kiss up to in fear.
Appearance[]
Poseidon is an extremely musical man in blue and purple robes. He has sea green eyes, similarly green hair and beard that are both entirely made of green water that makes bubbles and wears a golden crown that resembles seahorses. He caries a blue and red trident.
In Hades II, he also wears blue and golden armory that resembles scales. His watery hair no longer make bubbles, but make waves instead.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Immortality: As a god, Poseidon can't die.
- Hydrokinesis: As the god of the sea, Poseidon has absolute command of the waters.
Trivia[]
- In mythology, Poseidon was the biological father of Theseus and Polyphemus but the game made him the fun childless uncle trope to contrast with his brothers.
- According to his conversation with Hera (Zeus' wife), Poseidon is also unwed in the game's universe while in mythology he was married to Amphitrite. This makes him the only one between the three brothers to be single and childless but there's also a theory that he's lying to avoid responsibility.
