Power also known as the Blood Fiend, is the tritagonist of Chainsaw Man Part 1: Public Safety Saga.
Power was a Fiend and the current incarnation of the Blood Devil, the devil that represented the fear of blood. She was the partner of the human/devil hybrid Denji, and served under Makima in Tokyo Special Division 4 of the Public Safety Devil Hunters. Although narcissistic and mostly self-serving, she eventually formed genuine friendships with Denji and fellow Devil Hunter Aki Hayakawa.
Power is voiced by Fairouz Ai in Japanese and by Sarah Wiedenheft in English. Ai has also voiced Takechiyo from Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon and Jolyne Cujoh in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Wiedenheft has also voiced Grand Zeno in Dragon Ball.
Appearance[]
Power is a Fiend that possess the corpse of an unknown woman or girl. She has long back length blonde hair with a rather pale skin completion and red horns on her head. She also has yellow eyes with red pupils in the shape of a plus symbol and razor sharp teeth. Briefly when she consumed to much blood her horns grew longer and she grew two additional ones on the sides of her head. For her attire she wore a blue jacket with a loosely worn white dress shirt and a tie as well as black pants and white sneakers.
When restored to her true form as the Blood Devil appears to be a large tall humanoid with four clawed arms and a mostly pale-skinned body. Her head has a sharp dog like appearance with a neck made of out guts or exposed tendons. She retains her blonde hair as well and cross pupiled eyes, she also has a red devil like tail.
Personality[]
Power is a narcissistic, arrogant, egotistical brat, who thinks she is better than everyone else whether they be human or devil. Power's ego is likely because of her reputation as the Blood Devil claiming she was feared even among her own kind, but it is unknown if these claims were true or she lied to hype herself up. She had a substantial hatred for humans being willing to use, kill and betray them if need be having tried to feed Denji to the Bat Devil to get Meowy back, threatened to kill Kobeni to just to antagonize Himeno and even wanted to drink a humans blood until they died as a reward for her hard work. However she acknowledged that her hatred for man-kind was not personal but was just in her nature as a Devil. She was also quite sadistic taking immense pride in bloodshed and killing her opponents to the point it was disturbing. She was also quite entitled, immature and childlike, hating vegetables, thinking she owns everything like Kobeni's car and often throws temper tantrums when she doesn't get what she wants.
Despite her arrogance and pride she is capable of showing fear and dread especially to those more powerful than her. She was deeply traumatized by Darkness Devil to the point she could not sleep, bathe or even eat alone for weeks. Most notably the person she fears most is none other than Makima due to her immense power and even greater malevolence, being nervous to the point of sweating in her presence and even throwing Denji under the bus just to avoid her wrath.
However, Power is more than capable of showing humanity and care towards others. She loved animals such as her pet cat Meowy and was willing to work with humans just to get her back and even allowed Denji to touch her breast in exchange for rescuing her. She also cared about Denji like a brother as they had a lot in common such as their child-like tendencies, interests and immaturity even sacrificing her own life to save him and desiring them to be friends again in her next incarnations. Power even cared about Aki being saddened to learn he died and became the Gun Fiend and even saved his life once and even helped make him dinner out of kindness, although it did taste terrible. Overall, Power was never a bad person as much as she was just misguided.
Powers & Abilities[]
- Devil Physiology: Devils were paranormal beings originating from Hell that were born from the fears of humanity, with each devil representing a specific fear. Each devil existed so long as the concept they represented did, and vice versa. The more their respective concept was feared, the more powerful a devil was. The Blood Devil, as the name implied, was born from humanity's fear of blood. All devils were able to form contracts with humans that allowed humans to borrow some of their otherworldly power so long as they met the terms of the arrangement. Power claimed to be a particularly powerful devil feared by other members of her kind, although due to her personality she was likely just showboating at the time.
- Enhanced Smell: Devils such as Power had a sense of smell far greater than that possessed by humans. She could smell blood from a great distance away, and could also detect other members of her kind with her keen nose.
- Haemopotent Regeneration: Power is capable of rapidly regenerating their own wounds, even life-threatening ones, by consuming human blood. Generally speaking, the more powerful the devil was the quicker their wounds regenerated.
- Immortality: Devils were functionally immortal, as any member of their race that died on Earth would be reborn in Hell not long afterwards. The drawback was that devils who were reborn in Hell didn't keep any of the memories they possessed in their previous lives. It was possible for a devil to die permanently, but only if their existence was erased by being eaten by the Chainsaw Devil. In the event that the Chainsaw Devil devoured a devil, all traces of the concept they represented would subsequently also vanish forever.
Trivia[]
- Power's physical appearance, as well as her lethal and carefree personality, led to many fans comparing her to Zero Two from DARLING in the FRANXX, another series from Shonen Jump+.
- In a 2020 interview the mangaka, Fujimoto revealed that her personality was inspired by Eric Cartman from the South Park cartoon series and also from Walter Sobchak From The Big Lebowski.
- The origin of her name comes from the Christianity religion, from one of the name of the nine Choirs of Angels in the Middles orders: "Powers"
- Initial sketches of Power by Tatsuki Fujimoto had her originally resemble Akane Sawatari, although this was scrapped said concepts were later reused for Akane's design.
- Although it is unknown how Power became a Fiend and possessed a woman's corpse, it is often theorized that the corpse she possess was actually a victim of suicide judging by the scars on her wrists and scratches all over her body.
