“ | All that grows, must also wither and die. What dies and rots, nourishes the living. This is the great cycle of being. And we, the Priests of Rathma, use our dark art to protect it. | „ |
~ Necromancer intro in Diablo 3 |
The Priests of Rathma, also known as Necromancers by commoners, are a clan of dark magic users in the Diablo franchise. Due to their usage of dark magic, and the fact they can raise undead minions, few people trust or like the clan. However the Priests of Rathma are a noble clan who maintain nature's balance.
Beliefs and practices[]
The Priests live in a vast city called the Necropolis, hidden in the jungles of Kehjistan. The men and women of the Priests of Rathma believe that both life and death must be kept in an equilibrium, and to them, necromancy is the middle ground between life and death, hence why they practice necromancy. They call the balance of life and death "The Great Cycle of Being" and vow to maintain it. Any imbalance can lead to catastrophy.
The Priests are pragmatists and and believe that light, dark, order, chaos are all part of the cycle of being, as a result, they are among the few beings in Sanctuary who have resisted the corruption of Diablo and the rest of the Prime Evils and will battle against Diablo or anything else that threatens the balance of life and death.
Powers[]
Being adept at necromancy, Priests of Rathma can unsurprisingly raise undead minions to aid them in battle. From skeletons, to golems, necromancers are adept as raising fallen enemies to fight for them. Priests of Rathma also use curses to demoralize, weaken, and even sap the life force from their enemies. Priests of Rathma are also adept at three types of elemental magic, poison, cold, and blood. Necromancers need little sleep due to their magic and instead rely on meditation to replenish their energy. Due to their usage of necromancy, Rathma Priests have pale skin and white hair, giving them an eerie and deathly appearance.
