Prince Eric is the deuteragonist of the 2023 remake The Little Mermaid. He is a human prince who enjoys traveling the world. Ariel falls in love with him after saving him from drowning. Now mystified by the girl who saved his life, Eric is determined to find her after hearing her beautiful voice.

He is portrayed by actor Jonah Hauer-King.

Personality[]

Eric is an adventurous young man who finds life as a royal insufferable and enjoys traveling. Because Eric is just like Ariel, she falls in love with him. Despite his adoptive mother's over-protectiveness, Eric loves her dearly.

At the end of the film, Eric is reunited with Ariel and, in the end, they both get to see the world together.

Physical Appearance[]

Like his animated counterpart, Eric is a young man with black hair, blue eyes and fair skin.

However, unlike his animated counterpart, who is 18 years old, Eric is 21 years old.

Expert dancer: Eric is a highly skilled dancer, as seen when he dances with Ariel.
Expert rider: Eric is a highly skilled rider, being very capable of riding horses and command the reigns of a carriage controlled by his horse, King.

Expert sailor: Eric is a highly skilled sailor, often going on voyages despite being a member of the House of Savoy.

Biography[]

When Eric's biological family was killed in a ship-wreck, he was adopted by Queen Selina and King Maximilius. Additionally, he came to see Grimsby as a second father. Eric later developed an interest in seeing the world and enjoyed taking voyages. However, his mother disapproved of them because she lost her husband to the sea.

During Eric's 21st birthday party, fireworks are on display. Eric tells the kingdom's Prime Minister, Grimsby, about his wish to explore the unknown and help the people of his kingdom. When a storm hits, the ship collides with rocks and everyone must evacuate to the lifeboats. Eric manages to save his dog Max from drowning, but unfortunately becomes a victim of the shipwreck. Ariel rescues him and brings him to shore. She sings a song to him before swimming away when the guards arrive and carry him back to the palace. After hearing her beautiful singing voice, Eric becomes determined to find her. However, Selina forbids him from sailing again.

Ariel, having made a deal with the sea witch Ursula, is fully human, but forgets about having to kiss Eric to make the spell permanent. Eric rushes to meet Ariel, believing her to be the girl who saved his life. However, when Ariel cannot speak, Eric immediately leaves. In the evening, Ariel explores the castle and discovers Eric's collection of items he has gathered from his travels. They both spend time looking through the collection together. The next day, he takes Ariel out on a tour of the kingdom, where the two bond.

Trivia[]

Eric has his own solo featured in the film, "Wild Uncharted Waters".
"Fathoms Below" plays during his birthday instead of being the opening number.
Eric has several differences compared to his animated counterpart:
- Eric is 21 years old in his debut instead of 18.
- Eric is a royal by adoption instead of by birth.
- Eric falls in love with Ariel due to them being similar, with both of them viewing their royal life as suffocation and a limitation on freedom.
- Eric never kills Ursula, as it is Ariel who kills her.
