Zatz, Prince of Bats is the deuteragonist of Maya and the Three. He is the son of Camazotz and a mortal woman, the rival-turned-boyfriend of Princess Maya, and the former boyfriend of Acat.
He was voiced by Diego Luna who also played Manolo Sánchez in The Book of Life, Krel Tarron in Tales of Arcadia, Chip in DC League of Super-Pets, and Cassian Andor in Rogue One: A Stars Wars Story & Star Wars: Andor.
Personality[]
Despite serving under Lord Mictlan and given the task to bring her to him to be sacrificed, Zatz is shown to not be a malicious person. He is fair, honorable (often with how he thinks combat should go), respectful, and charismatic. Even when he brought the news of Maya wanting to be sacrificed and the news of her brothers dying in war, he remains respectful and sympathetic.
He develops feelings for Maya after their second meeting, interested in her fiery and loyal personality. In many instances, Zatz follows Maya through her journey to keep a look out for her, relating on being half-human like her, and trying to convince her to join to take down Lord Mictlan with him and his father (although Maya didn't trust him.)
Zatz is also family oriented, caring for his father and his deceased mother. He becomes absolutely devastated when his father is killed by Lord Mictlan and swears he will pay for it. He doesn't seek personal vengeance like Maya, talking about how he sees death is that his parents still live on in the stars and watch over him.
He cares deeply for Maya, even when she didn't like him at first. Zatz always tells her he will see her soon and would often watch over her on her quest. He is fascinated by her fighting spirit and skill, shown with him being amused at her skills against Acat and when she fought him on the rocks. He is even willing to lay down his life for Maya when he begs to be sacrificed instead of her and tells Maya he loves her before being killed by Mictlan in battle in Teca.
His selfless and honorable spirit is what leads him to earn living on as the moon itself.
