Princess Leona is one of the two deuteragonists (alongside Popp) of the manga/anime series Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai. She is the princess of Papnica Kingdom and a Sage-in-Training as well. During her father's absences, she took control of her kingdom and look over her people as well. Though she wasn't the student of Avan's, she became the official fifth Disciples of Avan after receiving her insignia from Queen Flora.
In the 1991 anime, she was voiced by Aya Hisakawa. In the 2020 anime, she was voiced by Saori Hayami in Japanese version and Kelly Sheridan in English version.
Biography[]
Three months later following the defeat of Fake Heroes, Leona and her subjects arrived at the Dermline Island for a ritual to receive a blessing from the Earth God. While she initially teasing and underestimated Dai and didn't think highly of him due to his short height and lacking skills of magic, she eventually became friends with him and gave him the royal knife after they get to know each other. When they're attacked by an Evil Scorpion, Leona became poisoned by its stingers and she and Dai were trapped inside the cave when Varon attempt to attack them. Seeing this causing Dai to awakened his newfound powers and used it to defeat Varon and Temjin by destroying the Killing Machine. After the ritual, Leona and her subjects departed from the island and returns to her kingdom, but not before telling Dai to call her by her name instead of her title.
When Papnica Kingdom is under attack by the Dark Army's Undead Legion led by Hyunckel, she send her swordsman Baduck help Dai and Popp train to defeat Hyunckel. Later following Hyunckel's defeat and redemption, Leona and her subjects are staying at Valge Tower where stops the guards from fighting over food. While waiting for Dai, they were attacked by Flazzard until Dai steps in and rescued them. Flazzard then used Blizzblaze Shrapnel Detonation to create Blizzblaze Curse Field so he could easily beat them all since they can't casts spells anymore. He then froze Leona in ice to stop them from escaping, but failed as they have no choice but to retreat. According to Flazzard, if Leona stays frozen for so long until tomorrow at sundown, her life force will be drained which could kill her if she didn't get unfrozen. After Flazzard is defeated, Dai and his friends has tried many times to defrost Leona but with no luck, until Maam used the Magic Bullet Gun to release her, which only costs her weapon as result.
Later that night, everyone are celebrating their victory. Dai shows relief of her safety, but Leona became upsets and remind him that it was supposed to be their heartfelt reunion, much to his embarassment. While she delivers her speech to everyone, Hyunckel steps in and admitted his crimes and actions to her, but instead of punishing him, Leona sentenced him to spend his entire life becoming the Disciple of Avan as his duty. While everyone are partying, Maam apologized for Matoriv's behavior and Leona teasingly threatened to call her "Ms. Maam" if she calls her by her title again. The next morning, Leona is seen healing Marin's injuries which made Maam feel burdened of seeing this. When Maam leaving to Romos Kingdom to train to become a martial artist, Leona encourages Popp to confess his feelings to her, but she actually waited for him to be rejected, much to Dai and Gome's dismay of seeing this.
When Papnica Troika begs her to let them go with Dai on his quest, Leona decide to go with him, causing Baduck suspiciously believed she has feelings for the young Hero. She wanted to go to Bengarna Kingdom with Dai alone, but wasn't happy of Popp coming along with them as she doesn't think highly of him. While they're shopping at the department store, Leona went to bidding for Dragonsbane against Mr. Gopple, but ended up losing to the latter after Gome stops her from continued bidding. When the dragons are attacking the kingdom, Leona helps people to evacuate the department store and help Merle saving both mother and daughter. After Dai managed to destroy the dragons, Killvearn arrives to reveal his plans to test his power and taunted the heroes, forcing them to travel to Teran Kingdom to find out more about Dai.
While waiting for Dai when he's at the Dragon Temple from underwater, Dai is sent back to the surface after he was attacked by Baran. The heroes became shocked of learning the truth about Dai, is that he's the son of the Dragon Knight Baran and his real name is Dino. After Dai is attacked and got sent back to the lake, Leona dive into the underwater to save and heal him, allowing him to fight back against the Dragon Knight. With no other choice, Baran decide to release his resonance on the heroes, which erased Dai's memories as result. Devastated of seeing Dai cannot remember anything including his allies, they have tried everything to get him to remember, but with no success which everyone's hopes were shattered. The next morning, Dai and his friends are traveling to Teran Kingdom and seek for the King's help to keep Dai for safety until he got his memories back by having him imprisoned at the dungeon cell. Popp announced that he'll be running away now that everyone is doomed since Dai's memories are gone, causing Leona becomes upset and slaps him in anger, unaware that he's willing to face Baran and the Dragon Riders to hold them off. Discovered that Baran is on his way to Teran Kingdom when Dai's Dragon Crest began to shine on his forehead, Leona gave him a Papnican Knife and implied of kissing him, before telling him that he's a young but brave Hero and his father is an enemy.
Leona and Crocodine are ready to face Baran who revealed to them that Popp risked himself fighting against the Dragon Riders to hold them off and keep him from reclaimed Dai back to him, causing them to realize they have been calling him out for nothing. Crocodine went to provoke Baran to trick him into draining his stamina and Magic Power while Leona heals him with Fullheal. Baran attempts to kill Leona with Zapple before Hyunckel went to stop it and tried to reasoned with him. Enraged, Baran transformed himself into a Dragonoid and attempt to unleash Doruora at Popp, Leona, Hyunckel and Crocodine before Dai shows up after he escaped from the dungeon cell. Popp went to stop Baran from giving him an evil influence and casted a Megante on him which got himself killed in explosion, much to his friends' horror of witnessing it. Despite Popp's death, Dai managed to regained his memories back and remembers who he is which allowed him to stand up against his father. Leona tried to revived Popp with a Zing spell, which was responded with Gome's wish-granting powers that allowed his corpse to move and fire a spell at Baran which allows Dai to finish him off. Despite their victory, everyone are still devastated that Popp hasn't been revived yet until Baran humbly accepts his defeat by giving them a reward with some of his blood to revive him before he promised Dai they'll settle a score to determine a fate of humanity.
Later that night, Leona became exhausted from healing Dai and his friends with Fullheal but they're almost getting killed when Hadlar and Zaboera ambushed the heroes and attempt to annihilate them until Dai defeats them both if it weren't for Matoriv. When the heroes are regroup at the wooden cottage, Matoriv gave them a Book of Avan for their journey. Dai has troubled reading the book which Leona helps reading it for him. After the heroes went to Papnica Kingdom, Leona began to prepare for the world summit so everyone could fight against the Dark Army, which was later held at the Papnica Grand Chapel. When the Sovereign Rock Castle arrived to destroy the Papnica Grand Chapel, not even the Bengarna Army were be able to hold it off, Dai went to save everyone from getting killed by destroying the Sovereign Rock Castle with his newly-made sword created by Lon Beruk. She cheerfully greets Dai, but became disappointed at him for leaving to help out his friends. However, Merle discovered that Killvearn will arrived and warns Dai about this. After Popp and Crocodine returns from the Field of Death, Leona believed that Dai fell in the ocean in the far north, northwest of Orzam. When Crocodine and Chiu left to search for Dai, Popp begs Leona to help him get his Magic Power back, which she said she already gave Marin a Magic Power. While having a meeting with the world leaders, Leona tells them they're going to invade the Field of Death since this is where the Dark Army are. After Dai is rescued from being trapped inside an iceberg, Leona is relieved to see him okay.
The next morning, Popp and Leona went to inform Dai and Hyunckel that everyone will be gathered at the ruins of Carl Kingdom to be prepared for the fight against the Dark Army. Later that night, Leona was seen lamenting of not being able to train with Dai and his friends because she has to stay at her kingdom to protect her kingdom and jokingly saying she'll go with them. The next morning, Leona and her friends are setting off to the Carl Kingdom where they're gathered at the underground base. When they're informed that Hadlar's Elite Royal Guards were attacking the Zababa Kingdom, Nova shows up and arrogantly bragged that he'll be defeating them all without any other's help before he left. Despite this, Leona still insists they should go help him and she and Amy gave Popp the clothes from the same material as Dai's. After Dai and his friends defeat the Elite Royal Guards, Leona and the others are treating those who are wounded. After learning that Dark King Vearn is might be located at the Great Citadel, Leona warns Dai it's too dangerous for him to go alone and he needs his father Baran to go with him, which Dai initially refused but agreed that he should go with him.
When Hyunckel struggled to get up from the bed, Leona told him he's in no condition of help Dai and his friends fight against the Dark Army and become shocked to discover that Amy is throwing the Dark Armour Spear away for the sake of his well-being, which Hyunckel left her coldly for this. Leona discover that Amy is in love with Hyunckel. Later, the Field of the Death is exploding from far away when the Black Core that Vearn implanted inside of Hadlar is activated, forcing Leona and the others to evacuate with the help of Queen Flora. When Gome, Popp and Maam are washed up at the shore after they escaped from the Vearn Palace, Leona and Flora took them in to the Forest Fort with the latter encouraged them to not give up. Later that night, Dai is revived and taken to Forest Fort unconciously, where Leona sits besides him on the bed and tearfully relieved he was safe.
When Leona and the others are having a meeting where they're planning to rescue Hyunckel and Crocodine from the Dark Army, they're counting on Dai because of his status as a Hero, ignoring the fact that he's just a kid who has a traumatic experiences of his father's death and his first encounter with Vearn, which they unintentionally putting a heavy pressure on him so much that he runs away to the woods. While everyone are looking for Dai, Leona argues with Flora that Dai's a true Hero no matter how much he's been through. The next morning, Dai returns to the Forest Fort with the help of Popp (via emotional support). During the meeting, Flora decide to choose Leona as the fifth Disciple in order to obtain the Kaglimmer from the Cave of Trials to get pass to Vearn Palace. Though Dai is against this at first, Leona assured him she'll fight like him and his friends and then asked Nova to help him train.
She, Maam, Merle and Queen Flora went to the Cave of Trials where they ended up facing the monsters and Leona became distracted over the "items" they have found. When they fell down to the underground after the floor is collapsed, Leona encouraged them to move forward so they could obtain Kaglimmer. Reaching the 25th level, Leona went to pray to obtain Kaglimmer while also managed to withstand the flame of soul until she finally used it for the girls to escape the Cave of Trials. When they return back to the Forest Fort, Dai and the others were greeted by both Lon Beruk and Baduck who presented him the newly-upgraded sword of his, with a secret inside of scabbard. Lon Beruk then gave him a note to read the details for him to use the weapon, but Leona read this for him because he still couldn't read. Back at the Fort, Leona became excited that Hyunckel and Amy will become a couple, much to Dai's dismay.
The next morning, Leona and her friends are prepared to fight against the Dark Army and went down to the underground under the Loroi Valley where the execution of Hyunckel and Crocodine takes place and later emerged from the underground once Hyunckel managed to suppress the Dark Aura inside of him. While the others are fighting against the Dark Army, Dai and his friends are doing the ritual to cast Kaglimmer on Vearn Palace. However, Popp is the only one whose the Insignia of Avan hasn't glow yet, which causing him to fell into despair and almost giving up. Zaboera, who took this opportunity, attempt to threw his Venom Chain at him, but only for Merle took the hit instead. When Popp went to held Merle at his arms, Leona reveals to him that Merle has feelings for him, much to his surprise. Despite he finally knew it, Popp began to admits he has feelings for Maam, allowing his Insignia to glow up for the first time and unleashing his full powers that repels the Dark Aura, including healing Merle's wounds and poison inside of her. As result, Dai and his friends finally managed to cast the Kaglimmer on the Vearn Palace which allowed them to infiltrate it.
When they're about to face the Dark King Vearn together, Dai and his friends were encountered by Hadlar and his Elite Royal Guard who challenged them for a fight. Albinass attempt to kidnap Leona, but Gome managed to stop her from doing so. While the others are fighting against the other Elite Royal Guards, Hadlar challenged Dai for a fight by one-on-one while Leona was forced to stay behind. While watching Dai fought against Hadlar along with her friends, Leona tells them about how Dai's pure heart has changed the entire world and making many friends, including his former enemies, and it's his choice to fight Hadlar by himself. After Dai successfully defeated Hadlar in one-on-one duel, Killvearn later takes advantage of this by trapping them with his Kill Trap, engulfed them in flames as result before Popp joining in to hold it off. Like her friends, she failed to get them out of the Kill Trap with her Crackle spell, not even the Purification Spells has no effect if the same person cast them twice. But luckily, Avan managed to step in and rescued them from being incinerated, but only for Hadlar to passing away as he disintegrates away into dusts. Leona formally introduced herself to Avan and later comforted Hyunckel over his problems of reuniting with his old master. While Avan fights with Killvearn, Leona and her friends went up to the central palace while waiting for him to meet up with them.
While Hyunckel is left behind to fight with the monsters from the Underworld to distract them from going after them, Leona and her friends went inside the Vearn Palace and Avan meets up with them as he used the Secret Way of Purification by casting a Click spell to open the gate. While Dai, Popp and Maam are left alone to eat their lunches that Avan has gave them, Leona meets up with Avan where she was given feathers because she could be the one who could succeeds him and helps Dai and his friends into their victory once they finally defeat Vearn once and for all. Once she and Avan returns back to Dai and his friends, Mystvearn arrived to stop them from getting to Vearn. After Killvearn sending Avan into an empty space, Leona realized that Mystvearn is only tricking Dai and his friends into lowering their guards by taking advantage of their feelings and warned them not to fell into his tricks so Dai could be killed and Vearn will be victorious, so she convinced them to moved forward to fight for the Hero instead. While Popp and Maam went to fought against Mystvearn, Dai and Leona went forward to confront Vearn until Mystvearn almost luring Dai into his death by threatening to choke his friends to death, but Larhalt managed to stop him in no time, allowing them to keep moving forward.
When they got to the Tower of Supremacy, Dai gave her back the Knife of Papnica so she could protect herself, which Leona tearfully accepts and hugs him. However, Leona was captured by a Magic Furnace where she almost got herself devoured until Gome managed to saved her life which resulted of got himself shrunk down. After Goroa is finally defeated and the Magic Furnace is destroyed, she and Dai are flying up to the top of the Tower of Supremacy where they're facing Vearn. While watching the battle between the Hero and the Dark King, Leona convinced Dai not to be swayed by Vearn's offer to join the Dark Army by preying on his fear of rejection, only for it to succeeds. After Dai seemingly defeated Vearn, Leona attempt to heal him with Fullheal but doesn't fully recover due to the damage from using Draconic Aura cannot be healed is similiar to from Dark Aura. Unfortunately, Vearn has returned, but weakened and his Staff of Edacity was destroyed. After Vearn regained back his original body from Mystvearn, he managed to take down Dai and attempt to convinced Leona to join with him, but she refused which he torments her by forcing her to watch as he attempt to kill Dai. However, Leona managed to stop him by stabbing him with a knife, causing her to be turned into an Eye Jewel by Vearn.
While she, along with the others trapped inside Eye Jewels, are watching Dai and the others fighting against Vearn, Leona later wished for everyone trapped inside an Eye Jewel to move so they could help them stop Vearn, which was later granted by Gome that allows them to do so. Realized one of the Eye Jewel was shining in gold, Vearn released Leona from her imprisonment and tore her dress, showing Gome on his hands in front of the trio and was about to crush him into pulp. Despite Leona and her friends' tried to beg him not to do it despite discovering that he's the Tear of Gods, Vearn refused to considers his ways and crushed him anyway, before a single drop landed on Dai's hand, which grant his wish to unite everyone's hearts. Now everyone finally stand against Vearn which detonate all of the Black Cores from his six towers, Vearn refused to accept his loss and planning to slaughter Dai and all his allies beforer he could resume his plans to destroy the Surface World. When Dai decides to use his Twin Dragon Crests to fuse into one and turn into Dragonoid, Leona and Popp became concerned about what happens to him but agrees to let him do because they still saw him as a friend instead of a monster, right before Vearn sending them down to the Heart of Vearn where they're trapped with their friends, leaving Dai to fought him one-on-one.
After they later escaped from the Heart of Vearn, Leona and her friends later reunite with their allies and are waiting for Dai to return once he defeats Vearn once and for all. After Vearn is finally destroyed, they later witnessing Dai falling down to the Earth until Popp runs off to save him. As they're celebrating their victory, they became happy of Dai's decisions of staying at the Surface World out of love. However, Killvearn later appears in front of heroes and mockingly congratulates their victory before revealing his true identity. The heroes later became horrified with Killvearn's plans to destroy the entire Surface World with the Black Core attached on the puppet's head to activate all six others one set up by Vearn. Leona fails to freeze Kill's Black Core since it doesn't worked unlike the six others. Later, everyone were horrified of seeing Dai got caught in explosion as he sacrifice himself alone, with Leona tearfully yelling out his name in sadness.
Following Dai's sacrifice, she and the others were searching for him for weeks, but couldn't find him anywhere. While mourning for him as they stared at the Sword of Dai, Leona arrives, along with Lon Beruk and Nova, pointing out that's the marker that Dai could use for when he comes back, much to everyone's shock and surprise of hearing this. The epilogue shows her smiling at the Sword of Dai while waiting for him to return.
