~ Zelda's farewell to Link as she sends him back to his own time, by playing her Ocarina of Time. |
“ | I've been waiting for you, Hero of Time... When evil rules all, an awakening voice from the Sacred Realm will call those destined to be Sages, who dwell in the five temples. One in a deep forest... one on a high mountain... one under a vast lake... one within the house of the dead... one inside a goddess of the sand... Together with the Hero of Time, the awakened ones will bind the evil and return the light of peace to the world. This is the legend of the temples passed down by my people, the Sheikah. I am Sheik. Survivor of the Sheikahs... | „ |
~ Zelda when she introduces herself in her Sheik persona in Ocarina of Time. |
Princess Zelda, also known as Sheik, is the titular tritagonist of the 1998 action-adventure game The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and a minor character in its 2000 sequel The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask as well as their respective 3DS remakes.
She is the princess of Hyrule who wanted to get a preemptive strike on Ganondorf by gaining access to the Sacred Realm to gain the Triforce, unaware that it was exactly what Ganondorf wanted.
History[]
Ocarina of Time[]
“ | And the other, who holds the Triforce of Wisdom… is the seventh Sage, who is destined to be the leader of them all… it is I, the Princess of Hyrule, Zelda. I apologize for meeting you in disguise, but it was necessary to hide from the king of evil. Please forgive me… | „ |
~ Zelda revealing herself to Link. |
Zelda appears as a young girl who lived her whole life in the castle halls. One day, a young Link intrudes into the castle's courtyard, but instead of arresting him, Zelda tasks Link to find three Spiritual Stones to prevent the evil king Ganondorf from obtaining the Triforce. Unfortunately, Ganondorf catches word of this plan and began chasing Zelda around the castle after the Ocarina of Time. Feeling that she was not the best caretaker of the artifact, Zelda gives the Ocarina of Time to Link so that he can protect it from Ganondorf.
Seven years past and Zelda (now known by the alias Sheik) has trained under Impa in the ways of the Sheikah. She comes across Link (who is unaware that she is, in fact, the princess) and assists him in awaking five of the six Sages. She teaches Link the various songs to teleport him to the various temples around Hyrule.
Zelda finally reveals herself to Link, not only as the Princess but also as the mysterious seventh sage and the protector of the Triforce of Wisdom. Ganondorf then kidnaps the princess within a pink crystal and Link pursues them and fights him to the death to rescue her and restore Hyrule to its former glory.
Link succeeds and Zelda rewards him by sending him back seven years to allow him to not only relive the time he lost but also to warn a young Zelda about the danger ahead, essentially preventing the aforementioned catastrophe.
Majora's Mask[]
Zelda plays a minor role where she is depicted spending time with Link after he warned her about the events of The Ocarina of Time. Zelda gives Link the Ocarina of Time as a means of preventing him from entering the Sacred Realm, as well as a memento to remember her by. She then teaches him the Song of Time, which has both strong meaning and significance to her life. The Song of Time plays a major role in returning Link to the Dawn of the First Day in Termina to allow himself enough time to save the world from the falling Moon caused by Majora.

Trivia[]
- This incarnation of Princess Zelda made the biggest impact on the Zelda timeline, as Link's opening of the Sacred Realm led to a split between three timelines: the Fallen Timeline, the Child Timeline, and the Adult Timeline.
- Each of the seven sages in Ocarina of Time correspond with one of seven heavenly virtues. In Zelda's case, it would be humility (the opposite of pride). This is because out of the fact that she gives up her role as Princess and disguises herself as Sheik working alongside Link to defeat Ganondorf and save Hyrule. She also takes responsibility and feels strong remorse that her plan to defeat Ganondorf as a child caused Link to be sealed away for seven years and cost Hyrule to be successfully taken over by Ganondorf.
