Heroine Overview

This world is designed to operate in the way that works best for me. So with every choice I make, it's a given that all things will be in my favor. In the end, it's only a matter of choosing whether something amuses me or not.
~ Priscilla explaining the reasoning behind her actions.

Lady Priscilla Barielle (born Prisca Benedict), also known as the Bloody Bride and the Sun Princess, is a major character in the 2014 Japanese dark fantasy light novel series Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World and its 2014 manga & 2016 anime television series adaptations of the same name, and a major character in its 2015 spin-off prequel light novel series Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World Ex.

Prisca Benedict was an arrogant princess of the Holy Empire of Volakia who faked her death after failing to claim victory over her beloved brother in the war of succession known as the "Rite of Imperial Selection." As "Priscilla Barielle," she became a candidate to rule the neighbouring Dragonfriend Kingdom of Lugunica. Highly intelligent, beautiful, and powerful, Barielle firmly believed that the world existed to suit her desires.

Priscilla Barielle is voiced by Yukari Tamura in Japanese and by Faye Mata in English. Tamura has also voiced Tenten in Naruto, Elizabeth Midford in Black Butler, Suzuha Amane in Steins;Gate, Mine in Akame Ga Kill!, Rika Furude in Higurashi: When They Cry, Nanoha Takamachi in Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, and Talim in the Soulcaliber series. Mata has also voiced Ryuko in Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir, Aqua in KonoSuba: God's Blessing on this Wonderful World!, Astolfo in Fate, and Rin Hoshizora in Love Live!.

Appearance[]

Priscilla Barielle was a young woman with pristine light skin and a slender, curvaceous physique who stood at five feet and five inches tall. She had large, upturned eyes with crimson irises and white pupils, faint pink lips, rosy cheeks, thin eyebrows, and long, radiant orange hair. Her bangs were parted to the left and braided, and her face was frame by two long stands that reached down to her neckline. She usually had the end of her hair arranged in some form of ponytail. She was considered immensely beautiful, and her appearance was often described as evoking the feeling of gazing at the sun.

Priscilla wore exquisite clothing that matched the crimson color of her eyes. The dress she was seen wearing most frequently was an opulent black and red aristocratic dress with wrapped off-the-shoulder sleeves, a wide-hemmed heel-length red skirt, a black petticoat, a large black ribbon with red striping attached to the right side of her waist, and a black flowery ornament with red edging and emerald jewels decorating each petal that was adorned on the opposite side of Priscilla's waist. The dress was also backless and prettified by various emeralds fastened to the skirt. Under her dress, she wore translucent reddish-brown holdup stockings with a black elasticized band at the top. She also wore a black choker, a pair of red high-heel shoes, and a pair of long black fingerless opera gloves. She often carried a crimson handheld folding fan that she stored in her cleavage when not using. Finally, her middles fingers were bedecked with a single emerald ring each and similarly-colored teardrop-shaped earrings dangled from her earlobes. The jewels enriching Priscilla's figure were all of such fine craftsmanship that anyone could tell they were incredibly expensive at a glance. Subaru Natsuki estimated that her full outfit from top to bottom was worth at least a hundred times his own money.

Personality[]

Priscilla embodies narcissistic personality disorder and solipsism, as she believes she is the only one that really matters in the world, and is convinced the world revolves around her; due to the latter, she never experiences fear, no matter how dangerous the situation, since she has absolute faith that reality will always bend to her benefit.

Due to her ego, she always interacts with coarseness when meeting people, or even upon subsequent meetings, although for the latter, she often doesn't care to remember people she deems to be uninteresting or unimpressive, thus multiple reunions are one-sided because she genuinely doesn't remember meeting them. This ignorance of other identities can create the sense she is being deliberately obtuse, which is sometimes a conclusion people make because with her genius, she shouldn't be so forgetful. However, some people she initially judged as worthless can prove themselves in her eyes, thus she would be able to remember them - their faces first, then later but longer to recall their names.

Despite her egotistical nature, she is extremely charismatic, and that trait with her exceptional intelligence, ensures that her followers are unwavering in loyalty; although, even with their admiration, they understand that Priscilla's personality quirks can be frustrating or even antagonising, so fall into a habit of apologising on her behalf, despite her refusal to allow it. She tends to refer to her followers as her property, which they don't appear to be bothered by due to it being a version of her consideration. While a widow, she felt no grief, or at least didn't display it, as marriages to her are simply business deals, thus she felt no emotional connection to most of her husbands. She can enact displays of affection, such as kissing on the lips, yet without any actual romantic intent or interest, as it can be a form of her declaring ownership of an exceptional person.

Her charisma, intellect, and beauty can also charm people into being enamoured with her, hence why suitors are still willing to marry her despite her previous six husbands dying in somewhat suspicious circumstances. Her retainers often feel love for her too, although she either is unaware or finds them more useful as servants than another lover. It might be an example of insight on her part, since she valued her followers too much to subject them to her possible curse.

While she frequently expresses contempt of "commoners" and gloats about her superiority to all, she does have a kind heart. Priscilla ensures that her followers avoid injury or death if at all possible, and she often risks her own safety or even be inconvenienced - which is something she always bemoaned - if she could help alleviate the suffering of others, even when they are the commoners she claims to look down upon. Against her egomania, if she is praised for an act of charity, she dismissed any claim as preposterous, coming up with an excuse or simply denying she was motivated by compassion, thereby could be either or both her view of her assistance being so easy that it didn't count as an effort to commend, and/or she does have a sense of humility that means she could be embarrassed if viewed as a kind person (another element could be the belief that kindness is weakness in her mind, therefore she aimed to avoid its "accusation").

Powers & Abilities[]

Abilities[]

  • Genius Intellect: Priscilla Barielle, ever since her childhood as Prisca Benedict, exhibited a genius level of intelligence. Born into the Volakian Royal Family, her environment encouraged her to grow mentally and emotionally at an accelerated rate in comparison to a regular person. Before she even reached her adolescence, Benedict was a masterful strategist, manipulator, politician, and leader capable of outdoing a majority of her sixty-six siblings. Despite her general disinterest in the mundane occurrences of the world, Barielle demonstrated remarkable perceptiveness and intuition. She was even able to notice details that were concealed by magic. In regards to her siblings, her only known rivals in terms of intellect were her older brother Vincent Abelks and her older sister Lamia Godwin, the former of whom definitively surpassed her.

Equipment[]

  • Yang Sword Volakia: The "Yang Sword Volakia" was one of the ten magical swords of power, a set of unique magical blades said to be unrivalled by all other weapons. Since the Holy Volakian Empire's foundation, the sword had been in the possession of the Volakian Royal Family and served as the symbol of office and personal weapon of the sovereign of Volakia. The weapon took the form of a large, exquisite crimson single-handed sword that shone like a flawless garnet. The wielder of the Yang Sword could materialize and dematerialize the blade at will, and the sword was capable of producing powerful fire that could be telekinetically controlled by its wielder. The white flame produced by the blade was many times hotter than any regular blaze, and could absorb lesser flames. There was nothing the weapon could not affect, as even beings with noncorporeal bodies and metaphysical targets like souls could be cut or burned by the Yang Sword. The Yang Sword's wielder could even designate what was affected by its attacks and what wasn't, meaning the Yang Sword caused no collateral damage. Furthermore, the sword improved the physical properties of its wielder to an immense level while drawn. However, summoning the blade and using its power required a large amount of the user's magical energy. Like certain other magical swords, the Yang Sword had a will of its own. It only imparted its power on members of the Volakian Royal Family it deemed as candidates worthy of ruling Volakia, and those who were deemed unworthy were incinerated by the sword upon making contact with it. The weapon was also known to withhold its power from its wielder if they contradicted the sword's desire. It was possible for multiple Yang Swords to be summoned simultaneously by different candidates for the throne of Volakia, and the existence of multiple copies did not reduce its quality. Despite losing the Rite of Imperial Selection, Priscilla Barielle was still deemed as worthy by the Yang Sword Volakia and as such was able to wield it without being incinerated.

Quotes[]

Subaru: Thanks a lot, you saved me. I seriously doubt that either one of us could've handled those three thugs on our own.
Priscilla: Speak for yourself. Whether either of you had stepped in to interfere or not, I was never in the least bit of danger.
Subaru: You're kidding, right?
"I didn't need your help, understand. I'm a super strong, fiery independent woman. I was doing just fine on my own." Something like that?
Priscilla: No. This world is designed to operate in the way that works best for me, so I'm never disadvantaged whatsoever.
Subaru: Woah, r-really? Well I guess I shouldn't have butted in then, sorry to interfere.
~ Priscilla and Subaru arguing after surviving their run in with thugs.

~ Priscilla explaining the reasoning behind her actions.
This Selection process is pointless. I'm the only one who is suited to rule this nation! All you people need to do is just grovel before my feet and serve me!
~ Priscilla's speech to the government of Lugunica.
