Heroine Overview

This world is designed to operate in the way that works best for me. So with every choice I make, it's a given that all things will be in my favor. In the end, it's only a matter of choosing whether something amuses me or not.
~ Priscilla explaining the reasoning behind her actions.

Lady Priscilla Barielle (born Prisca Benedict), also known as the Bloody Bride and the Sun Princess, is a major character in the 2014 Japanese dark fantasy light novel series Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World and its 2014 manga & 2016 anime television series adaptations of the same name, and a major character in its 2015 spin-off prequel light novel series Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World Ex.

Prisca Benedict was born to a noble family in the Empire of Volakia, a meritocratic nation that revered individual might over all else. She was one of the numerous children scattered across Volakia who were offspring of the Empire's 76th ruler Dreizen Volakia. Because of their royal lineage, Prisca and her many siblings participated in the Rite of Imperial Selection at a young age. The Selection was a tradition in which the offspring of the Emperor would battle it out for the right to become the next Emperor of Volakia. Ultimately, Prisca faked her own death and fled Volakia, allowing one of her elder half-brothers named Vincent to take the Empire's throne. Prisca, now going by the name "Priscilla," moved to the northern Kingdom of Lugunica and married a string of noblemen who all died mysteriously. Due to the unnatural deaths of her husbands, Priscilla earned the foreboding appellation "Bloody Bride." Eventually, she married the Lugunican nobleman Lyp Barielle and took his name, becoming known as "Priscilla Barielle." It was around this time that Priscilla was chosen by the Holy Dragon Volcanica as one of the five candidates to become the next ruler of the Kingdom of Lugunica. Seeing the throne of Lugunica as her divinely ordained destiny, Priscilla began building her plans to seize the Kingdom. She chose a mysterious former Volakian Sword Slave known as Aldebaran to be her knight, a man who would become her most loyal and dedicated servant. Later that year, Lyp also died, making Barielle a widow once again.

Prisca Benedict was born with a keen mind and supernatural luck that allowed her to navigate through life with little effort. Failure was a concept almost entirely foreign to Priscilla, and as such she was completely confident in every aspect of her being. It could be said that she was born a complete person who had no misgivings about her own nature. Her outstanding beauty caught the eye of every person who crossed paths with her. She was also born with a blessing that increased her battle strength during the day and wielded the legendary Bright Sword Volakia that allowed her to incinerate her foes. Additionally, she was a fairly potent user of light magic, allowing her to produce spells primarily based around strengthening herself and her allies. All of these factors and more made Priscilla exceedingly arrogant to the point that she believed the world itself and everyone in it ultimately existed to serve only her. That being said, she would wilfully concede in the event that she actually lost at something.

In all media, Priscilla Barielle is voiced by Yukari Tamura in Japanese and by Faye Mata in English dubbing. Tamura's other heroic roles include Tenten in Naruto, Elizabeth Midford in Black Butler, Suzuha Amane in Steins;Gate, Mine in Akame Ga Kill!, Rika Furude in Higurashi: When They Cry, Nanoha Takamachi in Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, Talim in the Soulcaliber series, and Haruka Minazuki in Kaitō Tenshi Twin Angel. Mata's other heroic roles include Astolfo in Fate/Apocrypha, Aqua in KonoSuba: God's Blessing on this Wonderful World!, and Rin Hoshizora in Love Live!.

Appearance[]

Priscilla Barielle's long orange hair shun radiantly like the sun itself and flowed through a single barrette before spilling down her back. Her blood red eyes had a glimmer of strong will that betrayed her commanding personality. Her pale skin was as white as the purest snow and was highlighted by Priscilla's faintly pink lips. She was considered a woman of true divine beauty. A person could spend their entire lifetime and fortune searching for someone as beautiful as the Bloody Bride and still find nobody who could match Priscilla's radiance. Additionally, her dainty figure possessed noticeably bountiful breasts and other shapely features that helped increase her already supernatural charm. She stood at five feet and five inches tall, making her the same height as Emilia.

Priscilla wore exquisite clothing that matched the crimson color of her eyes. The dress she was seen wearing most frequently was an opulent black and red aristocratic dress with wrapped off-the-shoulder sleeves, a wide-hemmed heel-length red skirt, a black petticoat, a large black ribbon with red striping attached to the right side of her waist, and a black flowery ornament with red edging and emerald jewels decorating each petal that was adorned on the opposite side of Priscilla's waist. The dress was also backless and prettified by various emeralds fastened to the skirt. Under her dress, she wore translucent reddish-brown holdup stockings with a black elasticized band at the top. She also wore a black choker, a pair of red high-heel shoes, and a pair of long black fingerless opera gloves. She often carried a crimson handheld folding fan that she stored in her cleavage when not using. Finally, her middles fingers were bedecked with a single emerald ring each and similarly-colored teardrop-shaped earrings dangled from her earlobes. The jewels enriching Priscilla's figure were all of such fine craftsmanship that anyone could tell they were incredibly expensive at a glance. Subaru Natsuki estimated that her full outfit from top to bottom was worth at least a hundred times his own money.

Equipment[]

  • Bright Sword Volakia: The "Bright Sword Volakia" was one of the ten magical swords of power, a set of unique magical blades said to be unrivalled by all other weapons. Since the Holy Volakian Empire's foundation, the sword had been in the possession of the Volakian Royal Family and served as the symbol of office and personal weapon of the sovereign of Volakia. The weapon took the form of a large, exquisite crimson single-handed sword that shone like a flawless garnet. The wielder of the Bright Sword could materialize and dematerialize the blade at will, and the sword was capable of producing powerful fire that could be telekinetically controlled by its wielder. The white flame produced by the blade was many times hotter than any regular blaze, and could absorb lesser flames. There was nothing the weapon could not affect, as even beings with noncorporeal bodies and metaphysical targets like souls could be cut or burned by the Bright Sword. The Bright Sword's wielder could even designate what was affected by its attacks and what wasn't, meaning the Bright Sword caused no collateral damage. Furthermore, the sword improved the physical properties of its wielder to an immense level while drawn. However, summoning the blade and using its power required a large amount of the user's magical energy. Like certain other magical swords, the Bright Sword had a will of its own. It only imparted its power on members of the Volakian Royal Family it deemed as candidates worthy of ruling Volakia, and those who were deemed unworthy were incinerated by the sword upon making contact with it. The weapon was also known to withhold its power from its wielder if they contradicted the sword's desire. It was possible for multiple Bright Swords to be summoned simultaneously by different candidates for the throne of Volakia, and the existence of multiple copies did not reduce its quality. Despite losing the Rite of Imperial Selection, Priscilla Barielle was still deemed as worthy by the Bright Sword Volakia and as such was able to wield it without being incinerated.

Quotes[]

Subaru: Thanks a lot, you saved me. I seriously doubt that either one of us could've handled those three thugs on our own.
Priscilla: Speak for yourself. Whether either of you had stepped in to interfere or not, I was never in the least bit of danger.
Subaru: You're kidding, right?
"I didn't need your help, understand. I'm a super strong, fiery independent woman. I was doing just fine on my own." Something like that?
Priscilla: No. This world is designed to operate in the way that works best for me, so I'm never disadvantaged whatsoever.
Subaru: Woah, r-really? Well I guess I shouldn't have butted in then, sorry to interfere.
~ Priscilla and Subaru arguing after surviving their run in with thugs.

This Selection process is pointless. I'm the only one who is suited to rule this nation! All you people need to do is just grovel before my feet and serve me!
~ Priscilla's speech to the government of Lugunica.
