Professor Utonium is one of the creators of the titular main protagonists of The Powerpuff Girls and the overall deuteragonist of The Powerpuff Girls franchise. He is a scientist who acts as a father figure to Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup, or often their damsel who needs rescue when he actually is their grandfather.
As a father figure, he often lectures the girls of moral lessons on how to be civilized and well-behaved. While in most episodes, his lessons were simple and easy to understand, such as not to steal, not to lie, not to envy, not to be so competitive. However, in the series finale "See Me, Feel Me, Gnomey", Professor was more political, stressing that the girls chose peace over freedom for having given up their powers to a gnome in exchange for getting rid of their crime-fighting duties. Because of this, the gnome became a dictator who forced everyone to sing and worship him, and Utonium compared the citizens to cows, then pressed for the girls to restore their country back into a democracy.
He created them by accident when his lab monkey, Jojo, pushed him and caused him to break his jar of Chemical X into his "perfect little girl" formula. He is voiced by Tom Kane.
In Powerpuff Girl Z, he has a son. At the final episode, he thought the Powerpuff Girls Z would lose their powers after defeating HIM, but he was wrong when the Powerpuff Girls Z showed that they still had their powers.
He was voiced by Tom Kane and Rob Paulsen as a child. In the Robot Chicken series, he was voiced by Abraham Benrubi. In Powerpuff Girlz Z, he was voiced by Louis Chirillo. In the Japanese dub from the series, he was voiced by Masayuki Nakata and by Tatien Kusunoki in PowerPuff Girlz Z.
Trivia
- He appears to be very similar to Samurai Jack, another Cartoon Network character by the same animators.
