You know. You know best. God tells you. If I listen to you, it's good, and right, and I can help, and I can save people, and make it right, and everything will be okay. If I judge as your judge, the judgment is God's Word. I see now. I am so sorry. Please give me a mask - I am afraid. No one can know me. Please let me be reborn like the world, cleansed of sin and new, and I will fight to cleanse the sin. Thank you, Joseph. Thank you, Father.
~ A note in Dutch's bunker, possibly written by the Deputy.

Serving as the main silent protagonist of the 2018 video game Far Cry 5, a supporting character in the 2019 sequel, Far Cry New Dawn, and a cameo character in Far Cry 6, acting as a supporting antagonist of the DLC Joseph: Collapse.

Years later, the Judge is made into a gun-for-hire to assist the Security Captain and the people of Prosperity to stop the Highwaymen.

Biography[]

Far Cry 5[]

Not much is known about their background, but they would recruited into the Hope County Sheriff's Department, and were given the position of Junior Deputy. By 2018, the doomsday cult referred to as the Project at Eden's Gate has taken full force, taking over parts of Hope County under the leadership of Joseph Seed and his siblings - Jacob, John and Faith. Due to the Seed family's radical intentions, the police department is called in to apprehend Joseph. The Junior Deputy is sent to to arrest him alongside Sheriff Earl Whitehorse, U.S. Marshal Cameron Burke and Deputies Staci Pratt and Joey Hudson. The Deputy arrests Seed, who seemingly allows himself to be apprehended while stating that God wouldn't let them take him. The cult respond by attacking the police, causing their helicopter to crash.

The Junior Deputy escapes in the ensuing chaos, as Burke and Hudson are captured by the cult while Pratt and Whitehorse seemingly disappear. After failing to leave the county, the Deputy is saved by Dutch, who decides to help the officer after initially thinking of turning them over to the cult. Seeing an opportunity, Dutch asks the Deputy to help the citizens of Hope County stand against Eden's Gate and stop them. Dutch tasks the Deputy with liberating his island, and provides him with radio support and information while the Deputy journeys across the county. After assisting Dutch, the Deputy is allowed to travel across the county to stop Joseph's siblings in their regions while building the resistance.

While battling against the cult in the three regions - the Hebane River, the Whitetail Mountains, and the Holland Valley, the Deputy meets their allies - the Hope County Cougars, the Whitetail Militia, and the townspeople of Fall's End. The Junior Deputy befriends the locals in each region, and becomes a member of each group to battle against Joseph's siblings by stopping "peggies" (members of the cult), liberating outposts, rescuing citizens, and stopping the cult's progress. During their journey, the Deputy rescues Hudson and Pratt after being captured by the cult themselves, which causes them to be brainwashed by Jacob with the song - "Only You", acting as a trigger for the deputy to turn violent.

Holland Valley[]

In Holland Valley, the Junior Deputy battles against the "peggies" in the region that under the leadership of John, whom is the herald of said valley. In the region, the Deputy recruits the marksman Grace Armstrong after helping her protect the graves of her father and the fallen, the pilot Nick Rye by re-claiming his plane, the pastor Jerome Jeffries and bartender Mary May Fairgrave after liberating Fall's End. The player also has the option to do missions for citizens in the region, such as helping CIA agent Willis Huntley collect an embarrassing VHS tape, or help Zip Kupka stop the "peggies" and eliminate animals who are drugged out on bliss.

While fighting against the members of Eden's Gate, John Seed notices the Deputy and marks them, causing "peggies" to hit the officer with bliss to knock them unconscious. When the Deputy is captured and sentenced to confession, they are rescued by Jeffries, who tasks the officer to save Merle and other civilians in the area before escaping. After gaining more of a reputation by stopping the cult, John marks the Deputy again and has his men capture the Deputy by using bliss bullets. Captured in John's bunker, the herald attempts to have the Deputy confess his sins, but the officer attempts to save Hudson but fails. Escaping from the bunker, the Deputy continues to cause more destruction by hurting the cult's control over the region, causing John to take the resistance hostage and attempt to force the Deputy to confess once again.

The Deputy and Mary May follow John to his airstrip, and the officer is supported by Nick and has the option to participate in air combat. John is defeated by either the Deputy or Nick, and the herald tells the Deputy that they won't save anyone, and hopes God will show them mercy before dying of his wounds. The Deputy then collects the key off of John's neck, and leaves the area to rescue Joey and prisoners in John's bunker, thus ending John's control of the region.

Whitetail Mountains[]

The Deputy travels to the Whitetail Mountains, where the region is controlled by Joseph's brother Jacob, a brutal war veteran who has his chosen soldiers and judges at his whim. The Deputy meets with the Whitetail Militia under the leadership of Eli Palmer, who previously worked for the Seed family in constructing the bunkers in Hope County. The Deputy can be assisted by Hurk, Jess Black and the bear Cheeseburger. While hurting Jacob's control in the region, the Deputy is captured and brainwashed by Seed with the song "Only You". The brainwashing causes Deputy to enter an angered state that leads them to killing Eli, thus crippling the Whitetail militia. Wanting to avenge Eli's death, the Junior Deputy confronts Jacob and kills them before taking his bunker key to rescue Pratt.

Hebane River[]

The Deputy travels to the Hebane River, where the region is controlled by Faith Seed, who uses the drug bliss to control and brainwash the cultist in her area. In the region, the player can recruit Adelaide Drubman, Sharky Boshaw, and the cougar Peaches to be their gun/fang-for-hire. The Deputy meets with the Hope County Cougars led by the mayor Virgil Minkler, and reunites with Sheriff Whiterhorse, who has been assisting the Cougars at the Hope County jail. Faith attempts to persuade the Deputy to join her by using the bliss to no avail, and becomes angered at their rejections. The Deputy is tasked by Whiterhorse to save Burke, who has been used in Faith's propaganda in ushering in recruits into Eden' Gates while under the influence of the bliss. Faith eventually confronts the Deputy and uses her influence on Burke to have him kill Minkler before turning the gun on himself. After stopping the cult from taking the jail, the Deputy confronts and kills Faith.

Endings[]

After killing Faith, John and Jacob in their regions, the Deputy raids Joseph's compound, who reveals that he has their allies under the bliss. The player is then left with two options, either resist Joseph and defeat him to save their allies, or walk away with their police colleagues:

If the player chooses to resist Joseph, they will be attacked by the resistance under the influence of the bliss. The Deputy will then fight their allies to break their brainwashing, and proceed to fight and defeat Joseph. Before Seed can be put into custody, Montana is nuked as a result of escalating international tension hinted throughout the game, thus causing the destruction of Hope County. The Deputy, Whitehorse, Hudson and Pratt attempt to flee with Joseph to Dutch's bunker, but they crash, with only the Deputy and Joseph surviving. Seed then kills Dutch and chains the Deputy in the bunker, telling them that he will show them mercy since they are the only one's he has left, and welcomes them into his family.

If the player chooses to walk away, Joseph forgives them and orders the resistance to let Whitehorse, Hudson and Pratt free. The group then leave the compound as gunshots can be heard, thus leaving the resistance's fates unknown. While leaving, Whitehorse tells the others that they will return with the National Guard, and then turns on the radio. It plays "Only You", thus triggering the Deputy before the screen cuts to black. It's assumed that the Deputy killed their colleagues or attempted to, but this ending is non-canon due to the release of New Dawn.

Becoming the Judge[]

The Deputy was left guilt-ridden for the deaths of many and failing to stop the cult, and started to believe in Joseph's words. The Deputy wanted to cleanse themselves of sin, and when leaving the bunker with Joseph, became his "Judge" in New Eden. From notes found, the Deputy didn't truly believe in themselves in their new role, but Joseph reminded them that they could find redemption in following him.

Far Cry: New Dawn[]

By 2035, the Judge is guarding the gate at New Eden, and encounters the Security Captain, who works with Prosperity in their attempts to defeat the Highwaymen. The Judge is later tasked with working with the Security Captain after being permitted by Joseph, thus allowing the Judge to become a gun for hire. The player then has the option to have the Judge be a gun for hire, where they can participate in fighting against the Highwaymen.

Far Cry 6[]

In Joseph: Collapse, the Deputy appears as the Judge and an antagonist, being a mini-boss within Joseph's mind. The Deputy also appears in one vision, where Joseph gives them the title of the "Judge" and the mask they wear.
