The Protagonist resides in their bedroom and must look after the nightmare animatronics from his surroundings to survive in all seven nights, from 12 to 6AM. He has fair hearing, especially when considering Nightmare Bonnie and Nightmare Chica's quiet breathing.
On the first four nights, he faces Nightmare Freddy, Nightmare Bonnie, Nightmare Chica and Nightmare Foxy. He also could play against Plushtrap in the "Fun with Plushtrap" minigame, to save two hours. From Night 5, he was left facing Nightmare Fredbear. On Night 6, he faced the core four animatronics until 4 AM, where Nightmare Fredbear replaced them. On Night 7, or "Nightmare" the protagonist was left facing the animatronics, this time being replaced by Nightmare at 4 AM.
- In Five Nights At Freddy's: Sister Location the Breaker Room's map reveals that the Five Nights at Freddy's 4 locations (the house during main gameplay, end-of-night minigame areas, and Plushtrap's hallway) are separated in different places. This may suggest that there are multiple protagonists.
- In the Survival Logbook, when the owner, Michael Afton, was asked what "recent dreams" he had, he drew a image of Nightmare Fredbear, heavily implying that he is the protagonist of FNaF 4.
- If Michael is also Mike Schmidt, this might also explain why the animatronics behaviour parallels FNaF 1, as well as the Phone Guy call from FNaF 1 being played as ambience.
