I remember and you were a loud mouthed bully. He always picked on me and stole my lunch money because I was smaller than him. It's just like in the old days the swine still hides behind someone when ever he's afraid.

Puar (プーアル) is a shapeshifting animal that is Yamcha's life long best friend. Puar's name is a pun on Pu-erh tea.

Concept and Creation

Puar's design was based on the character Binyao from Akira Toriyama's early depiction of Dragon Ball called Dragon Boy. The character is a shapeshifter like Puar, but he has Oolong's personality.

Puar's official design was established in Akira Toriyama's third draft of Dragon Ball. Though sharing an appearance to that of a cat or rabbit, Puar is neither species, but is drawn a little bit to look like a cat[6] (Puar is referred to as a cat by Emperor Pilaf, and Future Puar is referred to as a cat as well by Future Oolong).[7]

Personality

Puar has an unwaveringly loyalty to Yamcha and carries his orders without question. He also cares for Yamcha's well being, which became evident after the latter dies by the Saiyans.

Powers and Abilities

Puar is a skilled shape-shifter, as displayed throughout the series. Although not a skilled fighter like his best friend Yamcha, Puar (as a young woman) was shown sending Master Roshi flying into a window, due to fighting off the latter's perverted antics during the Universal Survival Arc.

Puar also has the ability to levitate, as he is always airborne while moving around, in the anime's version of the Battle of Gods Saga, Puar was seen flying alongside Yamcha to Bulma's birthday party.

Trivia

  • Puar's gender varies in some dubs, as the character is voice by female voice actors and is referred to as female in some Saban's edited English version of Dragon BallDragon Ball Z, as well as FUNimations Entertainment's Dragon Ball website.
    • Although Akira Toriyama himself had always thought of the character as male while writing the manga.
