Puddleshine is a reoccurring supporting character in the Warriors series. He was trained by the ThunderClan medicine cat Leafpool after ShadowClan's medicine cat Littlecloud died without a successor. He later reluctantly joins The Kin to treat his Clanmates when ShadowClan is taken over. Afterwards, he takes an apprentice named Shadowpaw, who's had prophetic visions since he was a kitten.
Appearance[]
Puddleshine is a tom with sleek brown fur covered in large white splotches and light blue eyes. He has scars hidden under his pelt from his time in The Kin.
Biography[]
Puddlekit, his sister Lionkit, and his brothers Slatekit and Birchkit are all born to Pinenose and Spikefur. Later, the orphaned Violetkit is taken to ShadowClan to be raised alongside him and his siblings.
A Vision of Shadows[]
Thunder and Shadow[]
ShadowClan's only medicine cat Littlecloud falls ill and dies, with no one to succeed him. As ShadowClan's leader Rowanstar debates with the ThunderClan medicine cat Leafpool over who should take his place, Rowanstar's deputy Crowfrost suggests Puddlekit. Leafpool is shocked as Puddlekit is still a kitten, but Rowanstar reasons that he and his siblings are nearly six moons old and will be made into apprentices any day now. Leafpool continues to question this choice though, until the leader gives her a hard look and states that ShadowClan needs a medicine cat, and Puddlekit will be the one.
Later that night, Pinenose urgently wakes up Puddlekit and tells him to go get Leafpool, as Grassheart is going into labor. Puddlekit rushes out of the nursery with Lionkit and Birchkit. When Violetkit asks Leafpool where Puddlekit is as she's helping Grassheart give birth, she says that she sent him to go get some moss. Pinenose protests that he isn't an apprentice yet, but Leafpool responds that he will be soon, and the sooner he begins learning, the better.
When Alderpaw and his Clanmates go to ShadowClan to check on Leafpool, they see her in the medicine den teaching Puddlekit - now Puddlepaw - about different herbs and their uses. After Leafpool greets Alderpaw, he glances at Puddlepaw and requests some time to talk to the brown she-cat alone, so she assigns Puddlepaw to sort out a pile of herbs. As Alderpaw and Leafpool talk about Puddlepaw, the former reports that he's a quick learner, but can't tell the difference between an herb and a weed half the time. After Alderpaw says that he's already been training for two weeks, Leafpool admits that he hasn't had any visions yet and might not be cut out to be a medicine cat, and that he wanted to be a warrior like his littermates. She then frets about how ThunderClan has three medicine cats including herself, while ShadowClan only has Puddlepaw.
At Puddlepaw's first half moon medicine cat meeting, Jayfeather bluntly asks how long his talents will be wasted on ShadowClan. The young tom anxiously replies that he's learning as fast as he can, and appreciates all that Leafpool is teaching him. After the meeting, right before the medicine cats split up, Jayfeather quizzes Puddlepaw on his medical knowledge, too which the apprentice begins listing every herb he knows. Alderpaw then asks Leafpool if she thinks StarClan made the right choice in having Puddlepaw be a medicine cat, and she replies that he'll be a great one because of his ability to learn quickly and his compassion for others. She then interrupts Jayfeather as he asks Puddlepaw if he knows how to treat an infected claw to call him to leave, reliving the brown-and-white tom.
After just two moons since his apprenticeship started, Puddlepaw becomes a full medicine cat, earning the name Puddleshine. Later, while helping him gather herbs, Violetpaw thinks about how much she likes helping her adoptive brother because of his upbeat and friendly demeanor. Later still, two of Puddleshine's Clanmates Oakfur and Wasptail fall terribly ill with an unknown illness that he can't seem to cure. When Violetpaw notices how stressed he is and asks what's wrong, he panickily lists off every herb he's tried and how none of them are working as he paces. Violetpaw suggests he go to Rowanstar for advice, and after explaining the situation, the leader admits that he doesn't know what to do either. Puddleshine and Violetpaw then suggest going to Leafpool for help, but Rowanstar vehemently refuses, saying they only needed Leafpool before because they had no other choice and telling Puddleshine to try other herbs. After Rowanstar leaves, Violetpaw offers to go get Leafpool anyways, but he declines, thinking of different herb combinations to try as he wanders off.
The next day, Violetpaw gets Dawnpelt to gather herbs for Puddleshine with her, and when they get back to camp they find that Rowanstar has caught the mysterious sickness as well. At Crowfrost's request, Violetpaw goes to get Puddleshine and finds him sleeping next to a pile of herbs. When he wakes, she worries that he's gotten sick too, but he scrambles to his paws and assures her that he's fine, and is just tired. She then tries to explain to him that Rowanstar is sick, but he keeps spacing out, so she asks again if he's ok. He insists that he's fine before pushing past her eagerly. She follows him as he excitedly tells Crowfrost that he's had his first dream visit from StarClan. He says that the spirit of a past ShadowClan medicine cat named Runningnose told him that the illness spreading through camp is called yellowcough, and it's cured by lungwort, which only grows on the moorlands of WindClan.
Puddleshine then gives some tansy to Dawnpelt and tasks her with giving it to Rowanstar while he goes to gather the lungwort, but Crowfrost stops him, telling him that he needs to treat his ill Clanmates. Puddleshine states that he's the only one who knows what lungwort even looks like after Runningnose showed him, so Crowfrost allows him to go, telling Tigerheart, Scorchfur and Violetpaw to be his escorts.
As they travel to WindClan, the group sees Dovewing and Twigpaw on patrol as they pass through ThunderClan, and Puddleshine warns the two about yellowcough in case it spreads outside ShadowClan. Once they reach the WindClan border, Puddleshine begins scanning the area for lungwort, when a WindClan patrol confronts the group. Puddleshine is about to explain to the patrol that he needs lungwort, but hesitates when he sees their hostile stares. Tigerheart encourages him to continue, and he explains the situation. One of the patrolling warriors, Crowfeather, then spitefully says that they'll be brought to camp so the Clan's leader Onestar may decide what to do with them. When they're brought to camp and Onestar demands to know why they're there, Puddleshine freezes up in fear, so Tigerheart instead explains their need for lungwort. Onestar replies that he doesn't care, hissing that ShadowClan cats aren't allowed on WindClan territory. WindClan's medicine cat Kestrelflight then pleads with the leader to let them get the herb, as medicine cats have free passage over all the Clans' territories for gathering supplies, but Onestar doesn't listen and demands that the ShadowClan cats leave.
At the next Gathering, Onestar accuses Puddleshine, Tigerheart, Scorchfur and Violetpaw of trespassing. Crowfrost, who is speaking on behalf of Rowanstar as the leader is too sick to attend, announces Puddleshine's dream that showed him the cure for yellowcough. One of RiverClan's medicine cats, Willowshine, exclaims that he's now a real medicine cat, and the other, Mothwing, asks Puddleshine to describe lungwort before asking Onestar if they may gather it from the moorlands. Onestar sharply replies that he won't let the herb be gathered if it's for ShadowClan, and Kestrelflight whispers and apology to Puddleshine before WindClan leaves the Gathering.
Later, Twigpaw is caught sneaking into ShadowClan to visit Violetpaw, and is held captive in return for ThunderClan helping them get lungwort. Twigpaw helps Puddleshine take care of his sick Clan while there, but is soon brought home by ThunderClan. Later, a rogue group known as The Kin attacks and takes over ShadowClan, absorbing most of its members into the group. Reluctantly, Puddleshine goes with them, wanting to be with and take care of his Clanmates. However, the leader of The Kin, Darktail, doesn't allow Puddleshine to treat their injuries most of the time.
Shattered Sky[]
Violetpaw and Needletail enter the medicine den, the former carrying a mouse for Puddleshine, and the two see that he and Darktail are the only cats inside. The apprentice gives him the mouse, and he thanks her before scarfing it down quickly. He then asks Violetpaw to chew up some coltsfoot and give it to Darktail to help with his breathing. Then, Darktail's second-in-command Rain comes in and talks to the leader for a bit. Puddleshine then says that he should go check up on the others, but hesitates to leave, not wanting to leave Darktail alone. Rain tells him that he'll watch over Darktail for him, to which the medicine cat thanks him and gathers up some herbs before going outside. Violetpaw then sees him on the other side of The Kin's camp, assessing Scorchfur's healing shoulder. While he's gone though, Rain tries to murder Darktail, but the leader kills him instead.
Later, The Kin invades and takes over RiverClan as well, taking members too weakened to flee prisoner. In an attempt to find where the prisoners are being held, Alderheart and Mothwing go to The Kin and claim that they're just retrieving herbs that the latter left behind. Needletail allows them to, but in exchange has them teach Puddleshine more about herbs. When they're escorted into the medicine den, Puddleshine is happy to see them and asks what they're doing there, and Needletail tells him that they'll teach him about herbs in exchange for some. To not draw suspicion, Mothwing them holds up some watermint and asks him what it is. Puddleshine is confused, saying that watermint is an easy herb to identify, as the spirit of Yellowfang had taught him about it in his dreams. He then catches on to their plan, and to help cover for them, he pushes a marigold toward Mothwing and asks her to explain it to him. As Mothwing pretends to teach him, he nods while looking concentrated. Afterwards, Puddleshine lets them have a few herbs, and as the two leave they see the den where the prisoners are. When Darktail finds out that Puddleshine let the two take some herbs, he punishes him with cleaning the prisoner's den.
Later still, as she watches Scorchfur clean out the den where the hostages are being kept, she remembers how that used to be Puddleshine's job and feels guilty that she got him in trouble by telling Darktail about the herbs, but the leader let him return to his normal duties not long after when realizing that The Kin need a medicine cat. When taking care of the prisoners, she sees that Icewing's wound is getting infected and finds that Puddleshine hadn't been allowed to treat it, as he was only able to tend to members of The Kin. After ShadowClan's elders are brought to ThunderClan, Ratscar mentions that Puddleshine had to sneak around Darktail to try and help them, as the black-and-white tom didn't want him doing any "special favors" for the elders.
Back in The Kin, Violetpaw tries to sedate Darktail and his closest allies by feeding them prey full of poppy seeds, but gets caught. Darktail asks her what the seeds are for, but she lies that she doesn't know, so he goes to Puddleshine instead. The medicine cat tells him that they're poppy seeds, and that enough of them can put a cat to sleep. Darktail then discovers that Needletail was in on the plan, and has her killed in front of Violetpaw as punishment, after which the apprentice runs away to ThunderClan. Soon after, a fight breaks out in The Kin, with both the ex-ShadowClan cats and the prisoners fighting against the rogues. Puddleshine is there as well, waiting to go tend to injured cats, and after a ThunderClan patrol arrives The Kin is defeated for now. As both ShadowClan's and RiverClan's territories are still under the control of the rogues, the cats of both Clans shelter in ThunderClan, Puddleshine included.
When the medicine cats -save for Kestrelflight - meet up at the Moonpool to discuss how to drive out The Kin, they visit StarClan and are greeted by Firestar. He tells them all that the fifth Clan, SkyClan, which had recently been brought to the lake by Twigpaw, is key to defeating the rogues. He then remarks that WindClan is absent, and they will be needed, too. As the dream ends, the medicine cats all give each other uncertain looks. Right before the battle to drive out The Kin, the medicine cats, including Kestrelflight, visit the Moonpool once more. In their dreams, they are all surrounded by spirits of StarClan, and Firestar beckons them to come to the middle of the clearing. Yellowfang then tells them that ShadowClan's home must be taken back, and the medicine cats all murmur in agreement when she asks them if they understand. Firestar then tells them that the Clans must remember their names, but all the medicine cats are confused as to what this could mean.
The next day, as the plan to drive out The Kin is being made, Alderheart realizes that the message of the Clans remembering their names means that each Clan must use their own unique skills to defeat the rogues. This strategy turns out to be a success, and The Kin is driven out and disbanded when Onestar sacrifices himself to drown Darktail in the lake. With their territories now freed, RiverClan and ShadowClan return home, though those too injured to go back yet stay in ThunderClan a little bit longer.
Darkest Night[]
At the Gathering, as the Clans discuss how many cats ShadowClan lost because of The Kin, Puddleshine mentions that his littermates Lioneye and Birchbark tried to leave, but he hasn't seen either of them since. A few days later, Twigpaw - who has joined SkyClan to be with her father and sister - is out hunting with Dewpaw and Finpaw when the latter has a tree branch fall onto his tail. Twigpaw goes to fetch Puddleshine, as SkyClan doesn't have a medicine cat of their own. When she gets there, Puddleshine asks her if her expecting Clanmate Tinycloud has gone into labor before she explains what happened to Finpaw. He gathers up some herbs and follows her to where Finpaw is. A SkyClan patrol has arrived to help the apprentice, but the branch is too heavy to get off of him. Puddleshine then grabs a sharp roc to amputate Finpaw's tail with, saying that he'll go into shock if he isn't freed.
Much later, during a Gathering, Rowanstar looses hope that he can hold his crumbling Clan together now that his son Tigerheart is gone, stepping down as leader and disbanding ShadowClan, offering SkyClan to take their territory. The other Clans object to this, but this doesn't dissuade Rowanstar, and soon ShadowClan cats begin to move to SkyClan, Puddleshine being one of them. In SkyClan, the leader Leafstar is about to turn away a loner named Tree before Puddlesine points out that he has six toes on one of his paws, just like the cat in a recent prophecy, so Leafstar lets him stay.
River of Fire[]
Puddleshine is now SkyClan's medicine cat alongside the Clan's original medicine cats Frecklewish and Fidgetpaw, who have been found and brought home. One day, Violetshine overhears Puddleshine and Frecklewish arguing over how to dry herbs in the sun. Frecklewish insists that they be laid out on boulders, and Puddleshine retorts that he lays them out on leaves and sticks. Exasperated, Frecklewish states that the way she does it is how it's done in SkyClan. The brown-and-white tom replies that his method is what Yellowfang taught him, and has been done for many years, asking why he can't do it his own way. The brown-and-gold she-cat argues that he's a cat of SkyClan now, and will do things the SkyClan way. Tree tries to calm them down by asking if it really matters since both methods herald the same result, but thy continue bickering regardless, eventually giving up and walking away
At the next half moon meeting, neither of RiverClan's medicine cats show up, and Puddleshine suggests that thy wait for them before they begin their meeting. After a while though, the two are still absent, and the present medicine cats continue on towards the Moonpool. When Leafpool asks if any of her peers have had visions from StarClan recently, they all admits they haven't. Puddleshine then says that he'd like nothing more than to get a vision, worrying for his missing littermates and saying that he cant send a search party out for them. Leafpool then expresses concern over ShadowClan's disbanding and asks Puddleshine if there's a chance his Clan could be rebuilt. He solemnly looks to his paws and says no, as ShadowClan is now gone and they all are lead by Leafstar now. The other medicine cats fall silent at this for a moment before Kestrelflight changes the subject by wondering if StarClan will have any messages for them tonight.
After waking up from their sleep around the Moonpool, Puddleshine announces that the spirit of Dawnpelt, who had been killed trying to leave The Kin, had spoken to him. He elaborates that she didn't seem to be in pain, and now resided in StarClan, adding that she gave him the message of "The shadows are approaching and must not be dispelled". Alderheart and Kestrelflight then say that Needletail and Lioneye told them the same thing. Frecklewish concludes that it must mean the missing ShadowClan cats will soon return and must not be turned away, to which Puddleshine looks at his peers with worry and says there may be hope for ShadowClan after all, but he'll have to convince Leafstar of the message first.
Later, a SkyClan patrol finds Sleekwhisker and Yarrowleaf in ShadowClan's old camp, who both became rogues instead of rejoining ShadowClan once The Kin dissolved, but have since then changed their mind and begged to join SkyClan, though Leafstar turned them away. When they get brought back to camp, Frecklewish reminds Leafstar of the message StarClan had given, and reluctantly the leader allows the two to join her Clan. Later still, the missing ShadowClan cats at last return, but Tigerheart is dead. Puddleshine tries to revive him, taking him to the Moonpool alongside his mate Dovewing, where StarClan gives him eight lives and makes him leader, giving him the name Tigerstar. Puddleshine and Dovewing soon return with the new leader, and the brown-and-white tom explains what happened. Tigerstar then restores ShadowClan, and Puddleshine goes back to his Clan's reclaimed territory to resume being their medicine cat.
At the next half moon meeting, Alderheart reports seeing the former ShadowClan cat Rippletail now living as a kittypet named Buster. Puddleshine is surprised, but happy to know that Rippletail is ok and will tell this to Tigerstar and Tawnypelt to see if they want to bring him back to the Clan. Kestrelflight is shocked to hear that Tigerheart came back to life and is now the leader, and Puddleshine explains what happened to him.
The Raging Storm[]
while out collecting borage, Puddleshine gets trapped under a silverthorn bush. Soon a ThunderClan patrol finds him while passing by the ShadowClan border, and he says with a voice of pain that he gets more tangled up the more he tries to escape. They rescue him and take him to ThunderClan's medicine den for treatment, with Twigbranch and Finleap informing ShadowClan of this, but nothing Alderheart tries to treat his wounds with seems to be working. Soon after a ShadowClan patrol comes over to retrieve Puddleshine, but Alderheart reports that he's fallen ill from the poisonous silverthorn and is too sick to be moved. Bramblestar assures the patrol that their medicine cat will be sent home as soon as he's able.
When Alderheart goes back to the silverthorn bush that Puddleshine was trapped under to try and find out how to treat his ailment, he sees a rabbit with the same condition, confused to see it eating a deathberry and spit out the seeds afterwards. When Puddleshine begins thrashing around, Alderheart returns to the silverthorn bush again while Leafpool tends to him. He sees the same rabbit from before, now cured, and realizes that only the seeds of deathberries are poisonous, but the berries themselves can be used to cure silverthorn poisoning. Alderheart then brings back some deathberries and suggests using them to cure Puddleshine, but Leafpool and Jayfeather adamantly refuse to take such a risk. Puddleshine himself wants to try it however, so the two allow Alderheart to start feeding him the berries after removing the seeds.
Later, Tigerstar visits ThunderClan to discuss borders and check on Puddleshine, but is horrified and outraged to discover that Alderheart has been feeding the medicine cat deathberries. He insults Jayfeather, who explains that Puddleshine himself agreed to the treatment. Tigerstar then allows Alderheart to keep tending to Puddleshine, but has him come to ShadowClan to do so, that way he can keep an eye on the ginger tom. After Puddleshine is moved back to ShadowClan with Alderheart in tow, the latter continues his treatment, and the former's heath begins to improve. Tigerstar is surprised to see the seedless deathberry method working, but is happy that his medicine cat is getting better. Once he makes a full recovery, Alderheart is allowed to go back to ThunderClan.
Tawnypelt's Clan[]
Tigerstar's and Dovewing's son Shadowkit has frequent seizures, and Puddleshine struggles to find a solution. During one of these seizures, Tigerstar calls Puddleshine over and tells Tawnypelt to go get some wet moss. Afterwards, Puddleshine then asks Shadowkit if he's had a vision, as he often does during a seizure, but the kit says no, so he has the kitten rest and gives him some thyme to help him calm down. Tawnypelt wonders if the previous ShadowClan medicine cat Littlecloud would know what to do, as Puddleshine is more inexperienced by comparison.
Puddleshine then admits to Shadowkit's parents that he can't help if if he doesn't know what's causing his seizures. He also comments that he'd like for Shadowkit to be his apprentice when h reaches six moons old because of his visions, but worries that the seizures that accompany them could prevent this. Tigerstar has Leafpool be fetched for her assistance, but she can't figure out what to do about Shadowkit's condition, either.
The Broken Code[]
Lost Stars[]
Shadowpaw's condition has improved, and he is now Puddleshine's first apprentice. Puddleshine later takes him to the Moonpool for his first half moon meeting to meet all the other medicine cats and have his apprenticeship become official. When they get there though, they find that the Moonpool has frozen over; something that has never happened before, and the medicine cats are unable to visit StarClan through it. Back at camp, Shadowpaw wonders if the unorthodox way he receives visions is because StarClan is angry with him, but his mentor assures him that it's likely just because of the frozen Moonpool, telling his student to take a break. At the next half moon meeting, the medicine cats are still unable to talk to StarClan, and when Shadowpaw later returns on his own, he receives an ominous message that there's a darkness in the Clans that must be driven out.
Another half moon meeting comes around, and still no progress is made in reaching StarClan. The medicine cats begin worrying that their ancestor's silence isn't temporary. Soon ThunderClan's leader Bramblestar falls ill and neither Alderheart nor Jayfeather can find the cause. Shadowpaw and Tigerstar then arrive, and the latter informs everyone that a StarClan cat had told him the only way to cure the leader was to bury him in snow. They go along with this plan, but as the night progresses after Bramblestar has been buried, his condition gets worse and worse. Puddleshine checks on the leader, only to somberly walk out and tell everyone that Bramblestar is dead, and isn't being revived. However, Bramblestar seemingly later revives during his vigil, and ThunderClan celebrates Shadowpaw for saving their leader.
The Silent Thaw[]
After appearing to have saved Bramblestar, Puddleshine decides that Shadowpaw is ready to become a full medicine cat, and at the next half moon meeting gives him the name Shadowsight after Tigerstar's deceased friend Spiresight. StarClan is still unable to be contacted though, increasing the medicine cats' worries. Upon noticing that Shadowsight has been distracted ever since the last Gathering where "Bramblestar" was acting strange, advising him not to second guess StarClan. The two then tend to Snowbird after she broke a leg from falling off a log, with the older tom concerned that it may not heal properly. The two also tend to Dovewing, Antfur, Stonewing and Scorchfur not long after due to them getting struck by a falling branch.
Communications with StarClan are still severed at the next half moon meeting, and Shadowsight says that earlier, a StarClan cat told him that there's darkness in the Clans that needs to be driven out, listing off a few cats who've broken the warrior cod in the past: Squirrelflight, Jayfeather, Lionblaze, Twigbranch, Mothwing, Dovewing, Crowfeather and Tree. Puddleshine believes this, and the medicine cats wonder if StarClan will return only when the codebreakers are punished. Later, while treating Pouncestep's injuries, Puddleshine tells Shadowsight that there's no point in second guessing StarClan, before wondering if his visions even came from StarClan at all. He questions the fact that the only contact they've had with StarClan had sparked conflict with Bramblestar, and Shadowsight is unsettled by the idea, later going to the Moonpool to discover his former mentor's speculations were true, wondering who spoke to him if it wasn't StarClan.
Shadowsight fearfully reveals to Puddleshine and Tigerstar that he was tricked by someone posing as their ancestors, causing the former's trust in his fellow medicine cat to waver. He ushers Shadowsight away while treating Yarrowleaf's bee sting later, causing an argument between the two about Puddleshine not trusting the gray tom. They're interrupted when SkyClan's mediator Tree arrives with his son Rootpaw, and after Tigerstar sends them away Puddleshine asks Shadowsight if he wants to treat Cinnamontail's stomachache, but the younger tom instead follows after Tree and Rootpaw.
After it's revealed that "Bramblestar" has been acting strange because he's been possessed, Puddleshine stands up for Shadowsight, saying he knew the messages he was receiving weren't from StarClan. He then watches as Tree and Rootpaw summon the spirit of the real Bramblestar, and believes that whoever is possessing the ThunderClan leader must be the spirit of a rogue, but Squirrelflight states that they may have been a Clan cat. At the next half moon meeting, Puddleshine and Shadowsight take Tree and Rootpaw with them to spread what they've learned to the other medicine cats. On the way there, they hear a scream coming from elsewhere and Puddleshine rushes away to investigate. Tree and Rootpaw decide to go on ahead without him, but Shadowsight is attacked when they leave him alone.
Veil of Shadows[]
Tree and Rootpaw get to the Moonpool and wait for Shadowsight and Puddleshine to arrive. Puddleshine then shows up alone, assuming Shadowsight would've already been there and surprised to see him missing. They go back and try to follow Shadowsight's scent in case something happened to him, but soon loose the trail in a patch of catmint. The meeting then continues without him, and after Rootpaw summons Bramblestar's spirit again, Puddleshine worries what the ThunderClan leader getting possessed may mean for all the Clans. As the meeting ends, Puddleshine hopes that Shadowsight had just went home as he leaves.
Later, Puddleshine arrives in SkyClan camp to talk to Rootpaw about a meeting later that night of cats rebelling against the imposter leader. He's surprised to see the yellow apprentice training to be a medicine cat. After getting out of camp and finding somewhere private, Rootpaw asks if Shadowsight has been found yet, but wearily Puddleshine reports that he hasn't. He doubts the imposter's claim that Shadowsight left the Clans because his mother is a codebreaker, fretting that his former apprentice may be dead. That night, he attends the rebels meeting in SkyClan's old camp.
After Rootpaw finds Shadowsight gravely injured but alive in a river. After being tended to for a bit in SkyClan, the gray tom is brough back home where Puddleshine is overjoyed to see him. While taking care of him, the brown-and-white tom lines his nest with feathers and moss to make him as comfortable as possible, and apologizes for not searching harder for him, but Shadowsight assures him that he wouldn't have learned about what happened to Bramblestar otherwise. Puddleshine later attends another rebel meeting, stating that he'll tell the other medicine cats that Shadowsight is ok at the next half moon meeting. He also explains that Kestrelflight and Willowshine had informed their own Clans' leaders about the faux leader, but neither Harestar nor Mistystar believed them. After a battle against the imposter that results in his defeat and capture, Puddleshine tends to his wounded Clanmates.
Darkness Within[]
After Harelight and Icewing are banished from RiverClan, Mothwing joins them in moving to ShadowClan, now serving as the Clan's third medicine cat. Mothwing and Shadowsight argue frequently over the latter's capabilities as a medicine cat, with Mothwing arguing that he should be demoted back to an apprentice, since the thing that made him a full medicine cat - "curing" Bramblestar - ended up being a sham. Puddleshine and Tigerstar defend him, but ultimately agree to demote Shadowsight back into being an apprentice, assigning him to take care of Ashfur, the true identity of the imprisoned imposter. Puddleshine loses some trust in Shadowsight for unintentionally helping Ashfur, and the dark gray tom mourns their previous closeness.
There is still no sign of StarClan at the next half moon meeting, and the medicine cats begin fretting that their ancestors are gone forever, starting an argument whether or not Ashfur would be able to restore the connection. Shadowsight states that he saw a barrier blocking StarClan and witnessed Ashfur leave Bramblestar's body, but to his frustration no one believes him.
A Light in the Mist[]
After Ashfur is defeated, Puddleshine regains trust in his former student, and Mothwing returns to RiverClan. At the first half moon meeting since Ashfur's defeat, the medicine cats are all thrilled to find they can speak to StarClan again. Shadowsight however admits that he never had the ability to communicate with any StarClan cats other that Ashfur, wondering if he still has a place as a medicine cat. The others assure him that he's still one of them, telling him he's a talented healer and apologizing if they made him doubt himself.
