The Punies are supporting characters in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
Appearance[]
Punies are gray slug-like beings with four little legs, a pair of huge round eyes, and a bulb dangling from an antenna on their heads. As their name suggests, they are small compared to other creatures.
History[]
Around thousand years prior to the events of the game, the Punies were constantly abused by predators until one of the Four Heroes who defeated the Shadow Queen helped them fight back against their tormentors. She also carved out The Great Tree in Boggly Woods for the Punies to use as a shelter and gave them one of the Crystal Stars to protect.
The first time Mario encounters a Puni is when he first descends into the Rogueport Underground in search of the Thousand-Year Door. However, the little creature runs away into a crack in the wall as soon as it sees Mario and cannot be interacted with. After obtaining the first Crystal Star, Mario and company spot the same Puni traveling through pipes underground and followed it until they managed to corner the creature. They assured the Puni that they meant no harm before it told them his name is Punio and he was searching for someone to help him save his home from invaders. Mario agrees to help the Puni and learns that the in The Great Tree has been taken over by the X-Nauts who sought the Crystal Star hidden there. With help from the local Wind Spirit Madame Flurrie, they enter the tree find only a few Punies managed to escape capture before the one named Puniper berates Punio for leaving them and refuses to help them fight until the Puni Elder is freed from imprisonment. Once the elder is safe, she gives Mario the Puni Orb to command the other Punies. Together they reveal hidden paths for Mario to use and battle the Jabbi Tribe that have teamed up with the X-Nauts for control of The Great Tree.
