Quetzal is one of the main characters in the TV series Dragon Tales. He is a wise, elderly dragon who is the teacher at the School in the Sky, where he teaches the younger dragons about Dragonland, how to solve everyday problems and puzzles, and most importantly how to have fun.
He is voiced by Eli Gabay.
Quetzal is a large, yellow dragon with white spots and brown scales. He has blue eyes and wears a green, claw-footed dragon badge. As a indication of his age, he has visible wrinkles on his face.
Quetzal is one of, if not the oldest dragon in Dragonland, as it is implied that he has been alive for centeries. As a result he has a vast knowledge of nearly the entire landscape of Dragonland.
As the teacher at the School in the Sky, he helps the younger dragons pertake in everyday tasks such as how to fly or use their fire breath. At the school, he likes to read stories from the Big Storybook, a large almanac that contains many of the stories from Dragonland lore in which the characters and objects within the book come alive while he reads the respective story.
In many of the episodes, he helps the main characters understand the problems they encounter in their lives ranging from personal to logical situations.
In cases where the main characters are required to travel to an unfamilar part of Dragonland, or when they are or have to encounter a strange individual, he will use the Big Storybook to describe the person or place in particular to help them under stand who or what they are, and he instruct them what they must do while they are in the place or when they meet the individual in particular.
In more personal problems, will often times provide advice often in the form of hints rather than direct answers so that his friends can solve it for themselves, that way they gain the experience they need to make the right decisions.
- He has a twin brother named Fernando, who looks nearly identical to him, save for the different-colored dragon badge, which is red instead of green.
- Quetzal is revealed to be from Mexico, the same country where Emmy and Max's grandmother hails from.
- Quetzal may be named after Quetzalcoatl, a deity from the Aztec culture, which thrived within Mexico, where Quetzal originates from.
- He may also be named after Quetzals, a colorful species of bird located within Mexico and the southernmost United States.
