Hero Overview

Remember, concentrate on the moment. Feel. Don't think. Use your instincts.
~ Qui-Gon to Anakin before Boonta Eve Classic, his most famous quote.
He is the chosen one. He will bring balance. Train him.
~ Qui-Gon's last words to Obi-Wan Kenobi, telling him to train Anakin Skywalker as a promise.
It matters which side we choose. Even if there will never be more light than darkness. Even if there can be no more joy in the galaxy than there is pain. For every action we undertake, for every word we speak, for every life we touch, it matters. I don't turn toward the light because it means someday I'll win some sort of cosmic game. I turn toward it because it is the light.
~ Qui-Gon Jinn’s ideology about the Force.

Qui-Gon Jinn is the overarching protagonist of the Star Wars franchise. He was a wise, yet maverick Jedi Master who was active during the Fall of the Republic, and was also the last Jedi Padawan of Dooku and the mentor of Obi-Wan Kenobi. He discovered the young Anakin Skywalker, whom he believed to be the prophesized Chosen One, and intended to train him in the ways of the Force.

However, before he could induct Skywalker into the Jedi Order, Jinn was slain in a duel with the Sith apprentice Darth Maul. Due to the training, he had undergone during his life, however, Qui-Gon Jinn was able to maintain his consciousness after death and as such could commune with the living to a limited degree.

During the Clone Wars and the Imperial Era, Qui-Gon was able to communicate with Jedi Grand Master Yoda and Obi-Wan Kenobi, teaching and guiding them on their paths forward and showing them how they too could gain immortality through the Force.

He was portrayed by Liam Neeson in The Phantom Menace, who also played Darkman in the titular film, Oskar Schindler in Schindler's List, Bryan Mills in the Taken trilogy, John "Hannibal" Smith in The A-Team (2010), Ottoway in The Grey, and Michael MacCauley in The Commuter, and also voiced Aslan in the Chronicles of Narnia films and Good Cop in The Lego Movie. Neeson reprised the role for a brief cameo in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Qui-Gon Jinn was born about 80 years before the Battle of Yavin on Courscant and was discovered by the Jedi order to be a force sensitive shortly afterwards. Brought to the temple Qui-Gon was initiated into the order as a youngling. At the age of 12 he became a padawan and was apprenticed to the Jedi Master Dooku. He was Dooku's second apprentice after Rael Averross. Meeting Averross the two men became friends.

After Averross showed Qui-Gon holocrons in the temple library that contained prophecies from ancient Jedi mystics, Dooku at first didn't think it was a good idea for Qui-Gon to investigate too deeply, and it could lead to darkness. Dooku soon changed his mind - that Qui-Gon would probably take a deeper look at the prophecies whether he approved or not, so he decided to guide Qui-Gon through the ancient prophecies.

After Qui-Gon completed his training with Dooku and was made a full Jedi Knight, he kept in touch with Dooku over the years. On several occasions he spoke very highly of his apprentice Kenobi to Dooku. When Dooku left the order, Qui-Gon was shocked but decided to respect Dooku's privacy and initially did not attempt to contact him. When dealing with a crisis on Pijal, Qui-Gon attempted to reach out to his former master for advice, but received no response.

Following the mission to Pijal, Qui-Gon turned down an invitation to join the Jedi Council, becoming the first Master to refuse an invitation in hundreds of years. Knowing that he had seen the same thing the ancient Jedi mystics had seen, Qui-Gon explained that he wished to be silent for a while and surrender himself to where the Force would take him.

The Phantom Menace[]

Qui-Gon first met Anakin Skywalker as a young boy and could sense the Force in him. At the time, he believed that Anakin was the Chosen One who would bring balance to the Force when Yoda, Obi-Wan, and the Council did not believe so.

He and Obi-Wan were entrusted with protecting Queen Amidala from the Trade Federation, who was secretly working for the Sith. He engages in battle with Darth Maul, twice: first on Tatooine and again on Naboo. His master Obi-Wan battles alongside Qui-Gon in the second lightsaber duel against Darth Maul. He wields a green lightsaber and was slain by Darth Maul.

The film opens when Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi are sent to negotiate with Viceroy Nute Gunray of the Trade Federation. Unbeknownst to the Jedi, the Viceroy is secretly serving Sith Lord Darth Sidious, and tries to have them killed. The Jedi escape and sneak onto a warship and flee to the planet Naboo. There, they are attacked by the Trade Federation's battle droids. Qui-Gon saves a Gungan called Jar Jar Binks, who shows his gratitude by taking them to the Gungan city to speak with their high council, Boss Nass, even though Jar-Jar had been banished.

Qui-Gon uses the Jedi Mind Trick to get Boss Nass to offer them transportation and "sell" Jar Jar to them. The trio make their way to Coruscant, where they rescue Queen Amidala and escape Naboo to Coruscant. The Queen sends Qui-Gon, Jar-Jar, and her handmaiden Padmé (secretly the actual queen) on a diplomatic mission. A Federation ship attacks them, however, forcing to crash-land on the desert planet Tatooine.

They travel to the nearest town and find a mechanic shop. The shop is owned by a slave trader called Watto who owns Shmi Skywalker and her nine-year-old son Anakin. The boy tells Qui-Gon that he can win the money he needs to buy the parts to fix the ship by entering a podrace. Sensing something special about Anakin, Qui-Gon takes a blood sample from him and sends it to Obi-Wan to examine it. Obi-Wan finds that Anakin's blood contains a record number of midi-chlorians, a measure of strength and power in the Force. After learning from Shmi that Anakin had no biological father and can foresee the future, Qui-Gon becomes convinced that the boy is the "Chosen One" prophesied to bring balance to the Force.

Before the race, Qui-Gon makes a deal with Watto: If Anakin wins the race, Qui-Gon will "win" his and Shmi's freedom; if Anakin loses, Qui-Gon will give Watto his ship. Watto agrees, but only if he gets to keep one slave, and Qui-Gon chooses Anakin.

Anakin wins the race, the parts are paid for and Anakin is now free. Anakin does not want to leave his mother behind, but she makes him go. On the way back to the ship, the two are ambushed by Darth Maul, Darth Sidious' apprentice. Anakin runs to the ship while Qui-Gon duels the Sith Lord. The match ends in a draw as Qui-Gon and Anakin escape onto the ship.

The ship reaches Coruscant and Qui-Gon informs the council that the Sith have surfaced for the first time in 1,000 years, and that he believes Anakin to be the Chosen One. The Council hesitantly agrees to examine Anakin even though they feel he is much too old to begin training. (Averross was brought in late, at the age of five and Qui-Gon believed that no one else that old or older would ever be brought into the order). Though the council is impressed by Anakin's abilities, they forbid Qui-Gon to train him at the time, sensing great fear in the boy.

Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Padmé Amidala all return to Naboo and persuade the Gungan army to fight for them. Jar Jar leads the Gungan against the droid army in the meadows, Anakin leads the starfighters in a space battle, the queen and her guards sneak into the palace and Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan are left to duel Darth Maul.

Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan fight valiantly, but Maul stabs Qui-Gon with his lightsaber, mortally wounding him. Obi-Wan takes Qui-Gon's lightsaber and cuts Maul in half. With his dying words, Qui-Gon asks Obi-Wan to train Anakin, and Obi-Wan agrees. After Yoda dubs Obi-Wan a Jedi Knight, Obi-Wan tells him he will train Anakin, with or without the Council's permission. Yoda reluctantly agrees. Qui-Gon's body is burned in a pyre and mourned by everyone he knew.

Attack of the Clones[]

Ten years later, Qui-Gon's spirit watches from the netherworld of the Force as Anakin slaughters the tribe of Tusken Raiders who murdered Shmi; he calls out for Anakin to stop, but to no avail.

It is also revealed that Qui-Gon was once the apprentice of Count Dooku, who later joined the Sith and led the Confederacy of Independent Systems, a faction of planetary systems trying to secede from the Republic.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars[]

Towards the beginning of the Clone Wars, Yoda experiences a Force vision of a manifestation of Qui-Gon and a nine-year old Anakin on Dagobah. In the vision, Qui-Gon tells Anakin that he must face his fear by entering a cave strong with the dark side, and to trust in the Force.

During the war, Obi-Wan, Anakin and Anakin's apprentice Ahsoka Tano traveled to the mysterious planet of Mortis and encountered a family strong with Force-sensitivity consisting of the Father, Daughter, and Son. A ghostly apparition of Qui-Gon first appears to Kenobi and tells him of the family that, like himself, believes Anakin to be the Chosen One. Obi-Wan asks Qui-Gon what the planet was, and the spirit explains that the planet is a conduit through which the entire Force of the universe flows, being both an amplifier and a magnet. Qui-Gon then warns that, if Anakin is the Chosen One, the boy would discover it on Mortis, and if not then the planet would prove to be very dangerous for someone so powerful. Later Qui-Gon appears before Anakin, who is going to confront the Son. Qui-Gon guides him towards a place strong with the dark side and tells him to remember his training and trust his instincts.

Revenge of the Sith[]

Toward Revenge of the Sith, after the Republic has fallen and Anakin has become Darth Vader, Qui-Gon's spirit communicates with Yoda and offers to teach him and Obi-Wan how to retain consciousness after death and become a spirit in the Force.

Later History[]

Qui-Gon's spirit continued to communicate with both Yoda and Obi-Wan during their exiles. Due to his training being incomplete, Qui-Gon was initially unable to manifest himself visually and could only speak to Yoda and Obi-Wan through a disembodied voice. He continued his training and by 9 years before the Battle of Yavin was able to manifest himself visually.

In 9 BBY after Obi-Wan had completed a mission to rescue Princess Leia Obi-Wan reconnected to the Force. During the course of this mission Obi-Wan faced Darth Vader and defeated him in a duel. With both of the Skywalker children safe, Obi-Wan decided that he didn't need to be quite so close anymore and that the Lars could keep Luke safe from any dangers that appeared. Moving out of the cave he had lived in for several years, Obi-Wan began heading out across the Jundland wastes to find a new place to live. Feeling that Obi-Wan was ready, Qui-Gon appeared to Obi-Wan and lead him towards his new home. When asked why he hadn't appeared before, Qui-Gon replied that he had always been with Obi-Wan but until that moment Obi-Wan had not been ready to see him. Leading him towards his new home, Qui-Gon told his former apprentice that there was much to do.

Qui-Gon continued to appear to Obi-Wan in the years to come. After Obi-Wan rescued Luke from the Sandpeople and heard the plea of Leia Organa for help, Obi-Wan prepared to leave his exile on Tattooine. While Obi-Wan, C-3P0, and R2-D2 were giving a group of Jawas attacked by the Empire a proper cremation, Qui-Gon appeared to Obi-Wan to reassure Obi-Wan he was doing the right thing. Worried over how Luke would react to the truth, Qui-Gon told Obi-Wan that he was right to not reveal the truth yet. While visiting with Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon noticed the presence of the droids and was glad to see that they were reunited with Kenobi. What Qui-Gon didn't tell Obi-Wan was that he already knew Obi-Wan would die before too long and join him in the afterlife.

After defeating the Emperor and redeeming his father, Luke Skywalker embarked on a quest to learn more about the Jedi order, learning more about Jinn. Luke would come to consider the late Jedi Master a member of his family due to his close relationship to the Skywalker family.

When Rey confronted her grandfather Darth Sidious on Exegol, Qui-Gon was one of the many Jedi who spoke to her. Telling her that every Jedi who ever lived was now living in her, Qui-Gon told her that he and the Jedi all stood behind her.

~ Qui-Gon impressed by Obi-Wan's skills.
Concern yourself with right action. Duty will take care of itself.
~ Qui-Gon instructing young Obi-Wan Kenobi.
The ability to speak does not make you intelligent.
~ Qui-Gon being annoyed by Jar Jar Binks.
Always remember, your focus determines your reality.
~ Qui-Gon to Anakin Skywalker.

Trivia[]

  • Qui-Gon specializes in the Lightsaber combat Form IV: Ataru. This form is also favored by Master Yoda and Anakin Skywalker who made modifications to the classic moves so it can be more effective against blaster fire.
  • Qui-Gon was the first Jedi in the Star Wars franchise to become a Force Spirit. However, as he stated himself, because his training was incomplete, Qui-Gon was only able to speak to the living, and could not show himself like most Force Spirits, as shown when he talked to Master Yoda. However, he was able to show himself on Mortis due to the strange conducts properties of the planet acting as an amplifier and a magnet for the Force.
  • Even though she is a female, Qui-Gon is portrayed by Matilda in Angry Birds Star Wars 2. However, this could actually be a different, male bird whose name has never been revealed. Like he was in his original incarnation, Qui-Gon is Obi-Wan's Master. He, like Anakin and Luke Skywalker, can swing a lightsaber. Also, there is a chance he could survive in this version, as opposed to his original incarnation where he dies, but he is not seen in Stage 4: Rise Of The Clones, Stage 5: Revenge Of The Pork, Stage EX: Rebels, or any chapter of the game based off the Original Trilogy.
  • Qui-Gon Jinn is the first character to speak in the Skywalker saga.
  • In an interview, when Liam Neeson was asked if he'd want to do a Qui-Gon Jinn spin-off on Disney+ after reprising his role in the Obi-Wan Kenobi miniseries, he replied "No, I'm not. It's just, there's so many... spin-offs of Star Wars; it's diluting it to me... and it's taken away the mystery and the magic in a weird way, you know? But, it was nice to do the little bit with Ewan after 25 years, 24 years, you know? (We did a TV version. I appeared in the last episode; I had a few lines to say, two lines) And that was cool; I loved it, but that's it, yeah."
