Ra-ghoratreii was a minor protagonist introduced in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. He was the President of the United Federation of Planets in the late 23rd century.
He was portrayed by Kurtwood Smith, who also portrayed Clarence Boddicker in Robocop.
History[]
Ra-ghoratreii was an Efosian male. Following the unexpected death of previous President Hiram Roth in 2289, Ra-ghoratreii was elected in a special election.
One of the major events of his time in office was the thawing of relations between the Federation and Klingon Empire. In 2291 he sent Spock to a secret diplomatic meeting with the Klingons. After the explosion of the Klingon moon Praxis in 2293, Ra-ghoratreii supported the efforts to make peace with the Klingons.
Due to the efforts of the Khitomer Conspiracy, the initial peace talks ended in disaster when Klingon Chancellor Gorkon was assassinated. Despite this Ra-ghoratreii was determined to move forward with the peace process, and found the new Klingon Chancellor Azetbur also wanting to continue the peace process. As part of the process he promised the Klingons that they would not attempt to rescue Captain James T. Kirk or Doctor Leonard McCoy from Klingon custody.
Kirk's crew, however, had other ideas, and rescued Kirk and McCoy before they could be killed by the conspirators. Rushing to Khitomer, Kirk saved Ra-ghoratreii from being assassinated. There Ra-ghoratreii met the famous Captain Kirk for the first time in his life, and came away deeply impressed by Kirk. The following year, after Kirk's apparent death on the Enterprise-B, Ra-ghoratreii spoke highly of Kirk at his funeral service.
Ra-ghoratreii continued to serve as President of the Federation until the year 2300, serving three terms in office. He died some time prior to 2380.
The Federation later honored Ra-ghoratreii by naming a conference room at the Palais de la Concorde after him.
