Detective Senior Constable Rachel Marie Goldstein (née Friedman), also known by her nickname Goldie, is one of the four main protagonists (alongside Frank Holloway, Jack Christey and Alex St. Clare) of Water Rats. She served as the main female protagonist from season one to season four.

She was portrayed by Catherine McClements.

Early History/Biography[]

Goldie was born in Sydney, she was the daughter and only child of Felix and Rebecca Friedman. She joined the New South Wales Police Force at the age of 19, and later married lawyer Jonathon Goldstein, with whom she gave birth to their son David. However, Goldie and Jonathon’s relationship would later crumble several years later due to her refusal to leave the police force, leading to an acrimonious divorce between them which Jonathon used his influence as a lawyer to obtain custody of David, devastating Goldie.

During her time as a uniformed Constable in Kings Cross, Goldie, while off-duty, prevented an armed robbery from taking place at a supermarket orchestrated by Fran Marsden and her boyfriend, shooting the latter several times after he aimed his shotgun towards her. Fran was arrested and jailed for four years, while her boyfriend died from the wounds inflicted by Goldie. She was cleared of any wrongdoing by Internal Affairs, who privately viewed her demeanour as cold, although Goldie secretly remained haunted by the memory of the shooting, to the point that even years later, she was suffering from nightmares over the incident.

Goldie was later promoted to Detective Senior Constable in the Sydney Water Police division, and was partnered with Frank Holloway, who she is able to work effectively with, despite Frank's occasionally reckless behaviour.

Notable Storylines[]

In season four, shortly after Frank's departure, Goldie is stunned to find out that Frank's replacement is none other than her former lover Jack Christey, who has also taken up the Detective Sergeant position that both Goldie and Frank had both earlier resisted applying for. Despite Goldie's reassurances that she has no problems working with Jack, things remain awkwardly tense between the two while they work together alongside Reilly to investigate the bombing murder of a teenager, who was the nephew of a corrupt former colleague of Jack's, Brian Geary, who was the actual target. Goldie disagrees with Jack's methods of investigating the case, leading to an argument between the two where Goldie is finally confronted by Jack over their breakup, but Goldie tells him that the only way they can work together is if they not focus on their past romance. Eventually, Goldie and Jack manage to take down the murderer, as well as prevent Geary from getting killed as well. Following the investigation, Goldie is again asked by Jack why she broke up with him, which Goldie tells him that she doesn't know. Goldie is then asked by Jack if they broke up because Goldie was in love with Frank, to which Goldie is unable to answer.

Goldie soon crosses paths once again with prostitute-turned-madam Suzi Abramovich, who earlier in season three tricked Goldie and Frank into taking down her ex-boyfriend Adrian Madigan for a murder he did not commit, leading to Adrian's death. Goldie makes her contempt for Suzi known while she, along with Jack and Reilly investigate a robbery that took place during a swinger's party that Suzi attended, which later becomes a murder investigation when the man who hosted the party, Steve Brennan is found dead the next day. Goldie soon discovers that Reilly and Suzi had been flirting with one another, and warns Reilly that Suzi is not to be trusted. Goldie later finds out from Reilly that Suzi informed him that one of the robbers was female, and that Suzi was hired to attend the party by Brennan's wife Leanne. Goldie and Reilly soon find out that Leanne got in contact with a couple named Samson and Cherry prior to the robbery, possibly being responsible for both the robbery and Brennan's murder, but shortly after finding out about this, they get the news that Brennan's drug supplier Tom Duffy was murdered at Leanne's cafe, and she's disappeared. Goldie, Jack and Reilly soon find out that Samson and Cherry had no involvement in the robbery after the Nemesis crew take down another pair of robbers who were responsible. Running out of options, Goldie is forced to agree with Reilly's suggestion to reach out to Suzi to find out Leanne's whereabouts, they then drive to Suzi's brothel, where Goldie waits outside in the car while Reilly talks to Suzi alone. While Goldie's waiting for Reilly, she notices Leanne leaving the brothel attempting to flee, and chases after her until she catches up to her at a nearby carpark and arrests her. In custody, Leanne admits to paying Samson and Cherry to murder her husband, but denies having any involvement in Duffy's murder at her cafe, as well as denying that Suzi was involved in any way to either the robbery or her husband's murder. With Samson and Cherry nowhere to be found, Goldie reluctantly goes with Reilly's plan to go undercover as a couple in order to meet Samson and Cherry in person at one of Brennan's swinger contacts. The sting operation seems to go as planned when Samson and Cherry show up, but it begins to go awry when Reilly mentions Leanne, prompting Samson to hold Goldie and Reilly at gunpoint, while Cherry discovers that Reilly is wired. Goldie tries to calm them down, but she is pistol-whipped by Samson, who prepares to shoot her and Reilly, only to be stopped by Jack, causing Samson to attempt to flee. Goldie manages to take down and arrest Cherry, while Jack, Reilly and the Nemesis crew arrest Samson.

Later on in the season, in the episode "I'm Home", Goldie drops her son David off at the docks to attend a school trip sailing on a cruise boat. However, by the time she returns to Water Police HQ, she finds out from Reilly that David's friend J.J. Solomon was abducted by a unarmed man, prompting her and Jack to go along with Reilly out of fear of David's safety. Goldie's fears are well-founded as she discovers that David is missing as well, but she tries to keep her composure when trying to reassure J.J.'s mother Rebecca that she'll find him. Goldie and Jack later find out from David and J.J.'s teacher that the J.J.'s abduction wasn't random as the man had a photo to identify him. But before Goldie can investigate further, she is forced by Hawker to remain home for the time being, in case the kidnapper calls either her or Rebecca to demand a ransom for their sons' safety. When Goldie returns home with Jack, she begins losing her composure as she's worried that she'll never see her son again, Jack tries to offer support for her, but she turns him down. Goldie later finds out from both Helen and Jack, that Rebecca's husband Jacob, a dangerous Israeli Mossad operative long-thought to have been killed during the Gulf War, was in fact alive after being held captive for eight years, and had murdered Rebecca's partner Harry at her place by tourturing him to death, as revenge for Rebecca moving on beliving that Jacob was dead. Realizing that David was kidnapped by a professional killer, Goldie's anxiety over her son's safety becomes so severe that she is unable to sleep later at night after suffering from a nightmare. While playing video games in the living room to alieviate the anxiety, Goldie is confronted by Jacob, who reassures her that David is unharmed, but threatens to kill him, along with his own son, unless she listens to his demands. Jacob tells Goldie to get in contact with Charles Hartley, an Australian tied to the embassy, who Jacob plans to blackmail over his actions in the Gulf War in order to meet with him to make an arrangement to allow Jacob to flee Australia with J.J. After Jacob leaves, Goldie quickly informs Jack and Helen of the situation, and arranges to meet with Hartley in Hawker's office at Water Police HQ. Hartley is reluctant to meet with Jacob, and when Hawker finds out from the Nemesis crew that Jacob may have built a bomb, Hartley prepares to leave, but Goldie convinces him to meet with Jacob as she reassures him that Jacob's not planning to kill him. Hawker then gets a call from Jacob, and hands the phone to Goldie to speak to him, as he tells her that he wants to meet with her and Hartley at a nearby park in thirty minutes. Goldie and Hartley soon arrive at the meeting place, and Jacob arrives moments after, angered by the SPG officers in hiding. He tells Goldie and Hartley that both David and J.J. are safe, but if he does not return to them if is killed or arrested, then a device will detonate at the location where they are held which will kill them. He then tells Goldie to go and inform her superiors of this information while he talks to Hartley alone, but as Goldie is returning to her car, she turns around after hearing Hartley yell "gun!", and notices that Jacob has a gun in his hand. Thinking that Jacob is about to shoot Hartley, Goldie quickly tells Hartley to get down before she shoots Jacob in the chest, killing him. She then finds out from Jack that Hartley drew his gun first, intending to kill Jacob all along, prompting an enraged Goldie to attack Hartley before breaking down in tears while being comforted by Jack. Running out of options, Goldie and Jack decide to visit Rebecca, who is under Reilly's guard, to find out if Jacob knew of any places he might have taken David and J.J. to, as Jacob had previously stayed in Australia briefly to meet Rebecca's family. They soon find out, with the help of Rebecca, that they might be held at her cousin's place off-track towards Pittwater. With time running out, Goldie, Jack, Reilly and Rebecca rush to the location as fast as possible, with the Nemesis crew en-route towards the bay. When they arrive, Goldie and Jack search through the house, but no-one is inside. Goldie is then alerted to the boathouse downhill near the home by Rebecca, and she quickly runs towards it's location, but before she can make it, the boathouse blows up. Fearing the worst, Goldie continues to move towards the boathouse, with Jack and the rest of the squad, along with Rebecca, rushing to her side. When they enter the boathouse, both Goldie and Rebecca are relieved to find David and J.J. both survived the blast without any serious harm, having hidden underneath the boat inside the boathouse to protect themselves. After a visit to the hospital, Goldie and Jack take David back to her place, where she finally thanks Jack for being there for support her, finally admitting that she needed it.

Personality[]

Goldie was a tough, brave and tomboyish detective, who would often investigate crimes and try to solve them in spite of any danger or disciplinary action she potentially faced. She is also shown to be quite capable in taking down criminals by herself in single-handed combat.
