~ Rachel Elizabeth Dare |
Rachel Elizabeth Dare is one of the main characters in the book series Percy Jackson and the Olympians and it's sequel series The Heroes of Olympus. She is a mortal girl who befriends Percy Jackson but unlike most mortals in the series, Rachel is clear sighted meaning she can see through the Mist and see things for what they really are. She later becomes the host of the Oracle of Delphi.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians[]
The Titan's Curse[]
While running from skeleton warriors in the Hoover Dam, Percy Jackson encounters and almost kills Rachel with his sword Riptide after she startles him with a sneeze. Fortunately, as a regular mortal, Riptide passes right through Rachel who shocks Percy by being able to see the sword for what it really is. Although confused, Rachel provides a distraction for Percy to escape. Thalia Grace subsequently recognizes that Rachel is a clear-sighted mortal: someone who can see through the Mist.
The Battle of the Labyrinth[]
Percy once again runs into Rachel at orientation for his new school Goode High School.
Later, based on a clue provided to him by Hephaestus, Percy seeks out Rachel's help to navigate Daedalus' Labyrinth which Rachel, as a clear-sighted mortal, can do, allowing them to avoid the maze's traps. Percy is seemingly unaware of the fact that Rachel has a crush on him, leading to jealousy between Rachel and Annabeth Chase. Rachel is present when Pan fades and reveals herself to be the daughter of a rich and powerful businessman who has been contributing to the destruction of nature, something that she hates. Rachel is also present when Kronos is resurrected in the body of Luke Castellan and hits the Titan king in the eye with her hairbrush as a distraction so that she and her friends can get away.
The Last Olympian[]
Percy is hanging out with Rachel when Charles Beckendorf arrives seeking his help. Throughout the Battle of Manhattan, Rachel, who is on vacation with her parents, has a number of visions connected to the Great Prophecy before convincing her father to allow her to fly to the city by agreeing to go to Clarion Ladies Academy, an all-girls finishing school he wanted her to go to. Rachel's advice on the Great Prophecy helps Percy to figure out what needs to be done in the end.
Following the defeat of Kronos, Rachel steals Blackjack and flies to Camp Half-Blood where she becomes the new host of the Oracle of Delphi. Although the Oracle was previously cursed by Hades to never again be able to take a host, something that had driven Luke's mother May Castellan insane when she had tried during Luke's infancy, the acceptance of Hades' son Nico di Angelo at Camp after the war broke the curse. Upon successfully becoming the new Oracle, Rachel immediately recites the new Great Prophecy, the Prophecy of Seven.
The Heroes of Olympus[]
The Lost Hero[]
Rachel has taken to residing in a cave at Camp Half-Blood and continues her work as the new Oracle of Delphi. She provides Jason Grace, Leo Valdez and Piper McLean with the prophecy for their quest to save Hera.
The House of Hades[]
At Annabeth's request, Rachel, accompanied by Grover Underwood, meets with the Romans to discuss Annabeth's request that Reyna deliver the Athena Parthenos to Camp Half-Blood. Rachel reveals that the powers of prophecy are now no longer working right and that Gaea is on the very edge of awakening. Upon realizing that Rachel is the Oracle and that the harpy Ella has the Sibylline Books memorized, Octavian attempts to seize Rachel as a hostage to get possession of Ella. However, Grover puts the attacking Romans to sleep with his music and Rachel succeeds in convincing Reyna to make the trip.
The Blood of Olympus[]
Rachel has now lost all powers of prophecy due to the resurrection of Python who has reclaimed Delphi for himself. After the defeat of Gaea, Rachel leaves with the Romans to work with the harpy Ella on reconstructing the Sibylline Books, the only source of prophecy left now that her powers are gone.
The Trials of Apollo[]
The Hidden Oracle[]
Six months after the defeat of Gaea, with demigod communications disrupted by Triumvirate Holdings, Chiron sends two satyrs to retrieve Rachel. Although both are killed in the process, Rachel succeeds in reaching Camp Half-Blood. Determined to regain her powers, Rachel has been using the vast resources afforded to her by her father's wealth to investigate the current threat and has discovered that Triumvirate Holdings has been acting behind the scenes of the previous two wars, funding both Luke and Octavian in secret.
The Tower of Nero[]
Months later, Apollo, Meg McCaffrey, Nico di Angelo and Will Solace seek out Rachel's help after she's mentioned in their newest prophecy. By this point, Rachel has managed to get her hands on the blueprints for Nero's Tower and realized that the emperors' faces is the key to defeating them, something that Apollo and Meg have already figured out from their fights with Commodus and Caligula. Rachel is shown to be excited at the idea of being a part of a prophecy for once rather than being the one to issue it and she joins their mission. She has also had a vision each time that Apollo has freed one of the Oracles and has several more due to her connection to Python through the Oracle of Delphi.
As Apollo and Meg surrender themselves to Nero as per his demands, Rachel contacts Chiron to have Camp Half-Blood send reinforcements before joining Nico, Will and the troglodytes in sabotaging Nero's vats of Greek Fire that he is threatening to use to destroy New York City. Rachel is able to help Lu retrieve Nero's faces, but they are unable to destroy it due to how much power it contains. After Apollo manages to destroy it and kill Nero, Rachel confirms that he needs to face Python now rather than waiting.
Two weeks later, when Apollo returns to Camp Half-Blood after destroying Python and becoming a god again, he spends time with Rachel, Nico and Will. Rachel's powers of prophecy have been restored by Python's destruction and she is mentioned to have even issued a few prophecies in the time since getting them back. Rachel makes plans to spend some time in Paris before returning for the next summer and issues Nico and Will a prophecy for their quest to Tartarus that Will admits doesn't sound good.
The Sun and the Star: A Nico di Angelo Adventure[]
Two months after the defeat of Nero and Python, Rachel is driven to visit Nico di Angelo and Will Solace at Camp Half-Blood and repeat the prophecy for their quest. Rachel reveals that she has now said the same prophecy twelve times, something that Chiron has never heard of happening before, and she surmises that it means that they need to get started on their quest. Rachel is annoyed about basically being turned into a prophecy voicemail system, comparing it to all of the annoying calls that her father gets about renewing his car warranties. When Chiron points out how they've learned in recent months that prophecies can be manipulated or just plain malicious, Rachel takes no offense as she's just happy to be the Oracle of Delphi again. Based on his nightmares and Rachel's prophecy getting stuck on repeat, Nico comes to the conclusion that Bob's situation is getting worse and he needs to go after him. After Chiron gives Nico an official quest, Rachel hopes that this works, not just for Nico's sake, but so that she doesn't billow prophecy smoke on the plane ride to Paris next week.
Hades later reveals that he was responsible for Rachel issuing the prophecy so many times as the god of the Underworld had wanted his son to rescue Bob.
Appearance[]
Rachel wears over-large shirts, doodles on her jeans. She is depicted as being a tall, slim girl with frizzy red hair, freckled face, green eyes and is noticed as attractive by a seemingly jealous Annabeth Chase. In The Battle of the Labyrinth, Rachel is seen dressed in gold, for an art project. She is also known for carrying a blue plastic hair brush in her back pocket.
Abilities[]
Rachel has the ability to see through Mist, a thing that makes most humans unaware of the Olympians and immortals. She has the power to predict things, which is not common even with demigods. Because of these powers, the Oracle of Delphi passes into her from the cursed remains of the previous oracle.
Trivia[]
- Rachel's house in Brooklyn in The Tower of Nero is close to Brooklyn House from The Kane Chronicles. Unlike Apollo, Meg, Nico and Will, she is actually able to see the mansion and mentions seeing penguins that presumably belong to Felix, a young magician obsessed with them.
- Percy mentions during “The Last Olympian” that Rachel earned his permanent respect by nailing a possessed Luke in the eye with a blue plastic hairbrush
- Rachel is the fourth mortal known to posses “Clear Sight” (the ability to see through The Mist) (Sally Jackson, May Castellan, and Ariadne are the other three)
