Ramon Laredo is the main character of the 1923 film Moran of the Lady Letty. A replacement for Ross Wilbur, the main character of the source novel of the same name, Ramon was played by Rudolph Valentino and appears only in the movie version.
Character Biography[]
Ramon Laredo was a rich man, a playboy, who is shanghaied after missing out on his friends' yachting excursion. He ends up as an officer on a ship captained by the mean and wicked Captain Harding, who is running guns down to rebels in a Mexican community near a port. On the way, they spot a ship, the Lady Letty, abandoned and adrift. Upon climbing onto the ship, it is discovered that the crew was overcome by coal gas and that several members have collapsed from exposure to the gas. One, an older man, is dead, but the other, Moran, is still alive and is brought over to Harding's vessel. It is discovered that she is a woman - the old man's daughter - and that fact is just enough to have several of the sailors interested in her.
When Harding's vessel reaches its destination, he goes to the rebel to whom he has brought his guns and tells him of his plan to unload the guns that evening with his aid and to kill off all of his current crew. This he almost accomplishes, but Ramon urges his fellow sailors to iight back, and they manage to stop the attack and kill off the Mexican rebels. After clapping the Captain in chains in the hull, the ship returns to San Francisco, and when it docks in the harbour, Ramon rushes off to see his friends and assure them he is all right. He relates how his experiences have changed him and made him a better man, then returns to the ship in time to stop Captain Harding from attacking Moran. It is only at this time that they kiss.
