Courage is a word of justice. It means the quality of mind that enables one to face apprehension with confidence and resolution. It is not right to use it as an excuse to kill someone.
~ Ran to Noboru Shimojo; her most famous quote.
People can really change. When they're far away from each other, their hearts will change. It's so cruel that the only thing I can do is wait.
~ Ran about Shinichi.

Ran Mouri is the deuteragonist of the Case Closed franchise.

She is Shinichi Kudo's childhood friend and girlfriend, the daughter of the private detective Kogoro Mouri and the defense lawyer Eri Kisaki, and an expert karate martial artist. When Shinichi mysteriously disappears, she awaits his return, unaware that he is none other than her new adoptive younger brother, Conan Edogawa, as Shinichi has been shrunk to the body of a six year old due to being fed APTX 4869 by the Black Organization.

She was voiced by Wakana Yamazaki in Japanese, Colleen Clinkenbeard in the Funimation dub, Cristina Vee in the Bang Zoom dub and Megan Shipman in Netflix in English.

Appearance[]

Ran is a teenage girl with a slender yet athletic frame. She has big blue eyes and long dark brown hair with a wave on her forehead. Though she does wear different clothes throughout the series, she often wears the Teitan high school uniform.

Personality[]

Ran is generally kind and caring, always seeing the best in people. Her optimism and all-loving nature are what attracts Shinichi. However, she can also be aggressive if needed, such as when Shinichi displeases her or a criminal tries to attack her or those she cares about. In the case of the criminals, she often gives them a taste of her karate, leading to them being arrested while bruised. Her karate also makes Shinichi and everyone else scared of her. Ran's kindness even manages to touch Vermouth, a ruthless high-ranking member of the Black Organization, that the latter calls her "Angel". This has been a nickname associated with her throughout the series.

Ran has an undying loyalty to Shinichi. When he disappears, despite not knowing what happens to him, she still waits for him to return since she believes that he is solving an important case, even when it is clear that his absence greatly affects her. She is also resilient, not wanting others to see her cry. However, she can share a few things with Conan, who unbeknownst to her is Shinichi himself, such as her feelings for Shinichi. When she starts to suspect that Conan is indeed Shinichi, she feels embarrassed for revealing her feelings to him. Speaking of which, she has suspected Conan's true identity multiple times, and he has to use tricks to escape her suspicions.

Ran is also very humble, unaware of her own attractiveness and even oblivious to others' attempts to flirt with her, even though Sonoko encourages her in a different relationship since she believes that her wait for Shinichi is hopeless. If Ran is aware of the attempts at all, she would reject them since she only has Shinichi in her heart.

Despite being a mere teenager, Ran is able to take care of herself. In fact, she is the one who does most of the work in the house, as her father is constantly gambling and drunk. She also wants her parents to get back together and tries to heal their relationship multiple times, only for Kogoro to accidentally ruin it at the last second, much to her frustration.

Biography[]

Ran was born to the cop Kogoro Mouri and defensive lawyer Eri Kisaki. She met Shinichi when they were children at the kindergarten, when she was crying about the name tag that got stolen from her by some bullies, and the two became best friends ever since. After an incident with Eri at the police station, Kogoro retired from his post and became a private detective, and he and Eri eventually went in separate ways, much to Ran's distraught.

Growing up, Ran and Shinichi attend the Teitan high school together, and Shinichi has become a very famous young detective with many cases being solved in his hands. One day, they go to Tropical Land together and meet yet another case and two suspicious men in black. After Shinichi solves the case, he and Ran go home together, but he leaves her halfway through to chase the two men. He is eventually attacked by them and force-fed a prototype poison called APTX 4869 with the intend of killing him. However, the poison instead shrinks him to the body of a six year old. Knowing that he can't reveal this publicly or else he and his loved ones will be in danger, Shinichi takes on the identity of Conan Edogawa (after the two famous detective authors Arthur Conan Doyle and Edogawa Rampo) and pretends to be Dr. Agasa's distant relative. He is then adopted by the Mouri family.

Shinichi's disappearance greatly distraughts Ran, who believes that he is solving a very important case and thus doesn't want to force him to choose between it and herself. Occasionally, she also suspects that Conan is indeed Shinichi, but he manages to trick her by many means, often thanks to the help of those who do know his true identity, such as Dr. Agasa and his family. Also, Shinichi does meet her in the rare times that he manages to return to his original form, but they are always short-lived since the effect is only temporary. Despite everything, she still looks forward to his eventual return.
