I wish them well. It's been a gift to me, at the end of it all, to behold innocence.
~ Randall Clark

Randall Dean Clark is the overarching protagonist of the Fallout: New Vegas DLC Honest Hearts.

He serves as the protagonist and author of the Survivalist's journal, where he documented his life from the day the bombs fell, to the day he passed away, despite not being seen, his actions and influence can be felt by the time of New Vegas, as the children he protected went on to form The Sorrows tribe, who revere him as a legendary figure.

Background[]

Randall Clark, born February 5th 2053, served with the United States Army before the Great War changed his life forever. Deployed in the recently annexed Canada, Randall was appalled by the atrocities he had seen committed in the name of the United States. On his leave, he would often leave Salt Lake City on camping trips to put his survival skills to the test, often to the dismay of his wife. On the way back from one of these trips, The Great War had begun, covering himself from the bombs, Randall witnessed the destruction of his home.

Knowing his family was dead, Randall sought out somewhere safe from the radiation, on his way he mercy killed an elderly couple who were left blinded by the explosion and would have likely succumbed to the radiation. For the next few months, Randall would survive in nearby caves, living off the condensation to sustain his thirst. Randall would later travel back to Salt Lake City, hoping to find his family and give them a proper burial... but nothing remained. He would eventually return to his cave, where he would remain in his solitary existence until 11 years later, when a group of humans, 28 in total, wound up in Zion. Randall correctly assumed that they were Mexican and from then on, served as their guardian angel.

Randall would watch over the Survivors for months, saving one of their lives by alerting the others to his location and providing antibiotics to fight off any infection, it wasn't until early 2096 when tragedy would strike. A group of survivors hailing from Vault 22 would arrive, driven from their vault due to a fungal infection, they would attack the Mexican camp, killing all the men and taking the survivors to their own camp. Driven by a desire to help the survivors, Randall surveyed the Vault Dweller's camp and stockpilled his ammunition with the hope of rescuing the survivors, but what he witnessed inside the camp caused a change of plans.

The Vault Dwellers had eaten the surviving Mexicans, and Randall wanted to avenge them, so using his rifle and any explosives he could find, he waged a one man war on the Vault Dwellers. By the end of February, Randall had taken out 24 of the cannibals, only suffering a minor bullet wound. Randall's campaign would continue for ten months when the surviving Vault Dwellers would flee Zion, closing a dark chapter in Randall's life.

Four days after driving the cannibals from the Valley, Randall would encounter a woman named Sylvie. Sylvie was one of the survivors of Vault 22 who was often the target of abuse from the male members. During Randall's one man war against the Vault 22, she fled the group and landed in one of his traps. Randall nursed her back to health, learning more about her and her treatment by the Vault 22 dwellers. The two of them would live together for three years, their relationship soon developing into romance. Sylvie would eventually get pregnant, and Randall spent the next nine months learning how to deliver a baby, along with recovering necessary medical supplies. When it came time for the child's birth, a complication would arise when Randall discovered the baby was a breech birth, and with Randall unable to turn him, he would turn to performing a C-section, but the operation wasn't successful.

Randall had lost his family for a second time, and he lost all will to live. Randall tried to take his own life, but couldn't go through with it, for he was a survivor. On August 23 2108, Randall had his first encounter with feral ghouls, he initially believed himself to have gone crazy, but would realise that wasn't the case and would put the former humans out of their misery. Ten years later, the now 70-year old Clark had found a renewed purpose in life. Around April 2123, a group of 24 children would make their way into Zion, occupying the same campsite used by the Mexicans 30 years prior. Clark would watch from the caves above, hearing their conversations and mentions of an abusive man named "The Principal" who ran a facility called "The School", Randall was touched by their stories, and went to watch over them as he did the Mexicans.

Clark watched over the children, leaving them gifts of stories, medical supplies and other survival necessities. He would also leave them notes, giving them important lessons and telling them how Zion was a gift to them to make up for the sorrows man visited upon their lives. He told them to be kind and modest, but to strike out with anger against those who would try to harm them. He would be known to them as "The Father", a mythical figure who would watch over them and protect them.

By January 2124, Randall had unfortunately contracted lung cancer. Randall would give most of his belongings away to the children with one final note, assuring them that although he will not send them notes anymore, he will still be with them, watching over them. Randall would pack up his remaining belongings, including his rifle, and travel to The Red Gate. Under the stars, the elderly Clark would record his final thoughts, realising that what drove him on all these years was his memories of his family and how this kept him motivated to keep pushing on, ultimately finding comfort in the innocence of the children.

Randall Clark would pass away January 23rd 2124.
