The often-unwanted star of the Armstrong Dojo. Dusty strived his whole life for Brad's approval.
~ Rando's bio description

Dustin Armstrong, also known as Dusty and more famously as Rando, is a major character in the LISA RPG series.

Rando is a big figure in post-apocalyptic Olathe, being a resource provider and a kindhearted leader to his army. He is one of the few men in Olathe who still has morals, and even if most of his army members don't, they are undyingly loyal to Rando and respect him a lot. However, what most of his army don't know is that Dusty used to be a lonely kid, being an orphan with no money. That's when Brad took him under his wing, and helped Rando become the man he is during the game.

Appearance[]

Rando is a tall man, towering over most of the game's cast. His most iconic piece of clothing being the red skull mask he sports since the extinction of the female populace, adorned with a single, long spike at his head. For the majority of the game, he wears a long black cape with spiky shoulder pads, until the final fight with Brad where he discards the cape, revealing a stocky, muscular build. As revealed on a flashback, his face was sawed off by Buzzo, and after this his face never recovered, being heavily scarred, also leaving him without hair. Before that, he had bright blonde hair.

Backstory[]

Young Dusty

A youthful Rando

Before the events of LISA: The Painful, Rando was known as Dusty, an orphan who would regularly watch Brad Armstrong's martial arts class. One fateful day, Brad finally met the boy and talked about how he always stayed to watch the class happen. After Brad offers Dusty to assist to the class without having to pay, he starts to teach the boy his patented martial art style, the Armstrong, and after that, started idolizing the broken man, proclaiming himself as his adoptive son. After some time at Brad's dojo, a tragedy occurred where Buzzo (known as his real name Bernard in the past) destroyed the dojo's building as vengeance for Brad being unable to save his abused sister, the titular Lisa. Dusty tried to defend the dojo, but Bernard quickly beat him, mauling his face with a chainsaw, leaving him scarred for life. After Brad arrived at his destroyed dojo, he found Dusty in the corner, with his face messed up. After Dusty explains the situation to Brad, he's shocked and leaves without saying a word.

LISA: The Painful[]

Dusty, now known as Rando, serves as the central antagonist of the game, albeit being far more heroic than most characters. Rando is only seen mid game, accidentally destroying Brad's motorbike after standing in his way. This accident prompts him to gift Brad and his party high quality rations as an apology, then leaves with his right-hand man Clint Moss. This encounter leaves him crying, after not seeing his master for many years.

Rando is seen again in the end of the game, trying to stop Brad from taking humanity's last chance of revival, his adoptive daughter Buddy. Despite him singlehandedly murdering his entire army in cold blood, Rando still tries to make peace with him, which doesn't work, and leaves him no choice but to fight, being the final boss of the game. After Brad defeats Rando and reveals his scarred face, Rando thanks him for everything he's done and collapses, seemingly dying.

LISA: The Joyful[]

After surviving the fight, he had with Brad at the end of Painful, Rando returns as the deuteragonist of LISA: The Joyful and a temporary party member. Rando, despite not agreeing with Buddy on her point of view of the world (trying to kill all the other warlords that are left so she can be the strongest Olathe human), feels compelled to help, guide and protect her, although it is revealed he tried to keep her captive as a measure of protection later in-game while hanging in barbed wire in a pole, which makes Buddy feel betrayed.

Buddy can either forgive Rando and hold onto the barbed wire or letting him fall. Either way, he falls to his demise, and Buddy slits his throat in an act of mercy or vengeance, depending on how Buddy reacts to the revelation. In the finale of the game, Rando appears in an insanity induced illusion to Buddy, trying to make her not take a vaccine and become a Joy Mutant "to stay with them" (He and Joy Mutant Brad, which is debated among fans if he's also an illusion or real). The choice to take the vaccine or become a Joy Mutant is up to the player.

Trivia[]

  • Rando's name could also possibly be due to a minor alteration to the word "Random". This could be in reference to Dingaling not being completely sure what the character's story would be at first or the fact that he doesn't see himself as special, therefore looking at himself as a "random" man.
  • According to the game's creator Dingaling, Rando lacks control over his army, and his punishments are fair and humane. So, it's easy to walk all over Rando. But if needed he can kick ass.
  • Rando's respect started with the mask and by never talking.
  • His favorite food is toast and beans.
  • He loves peace, and hates letting people down.
