History[]
Background[]
Long, long ago, in a time of magic and dragons, there lived a girl named Rapunzel, who had the most beautiful, radiant hair the world had ever seen. But Rapunzel's life was far from wonderful.
She lived as a servant of Gothel, a jealous, scheming witch who kept her hidden deep in a forbidding forest, guarded by the enormous dragon Hugo and surrounded by an enchanted magic wall.
Rapunzel's discovery of a magic paintbrush leads her on a journey that will unravel a web of deception, bring peace to two feuding kingdoms, and ultimately lead her to love with the handsome Prince Stefan.
Barbie as Rapunzel[]
As the film begins, as told by Barbie to her little sister Kelly, Rapunzel was living with Gothel in her mansion deep in the forest guarded by Gothel's magic wall and the dragon Hugo. In that time, Rapunzel befriended Hugo's daughter Penelope and the rabbit Hobie, and spent most of her free time painting various pieces in her room.
One day, while getting Gothel her meal, Rapunzel discovers the cellar where Gothel stored all her mementos of the past, discovering a silver hairbrush with an engravement on it addressed to her from her mom and dad for her first birthday. She had been told by Gothel that her parents did not love her and abandoned her on Gothel's doorstep when she was a baby. Confused by this interesting piece of evidence, Rapunzel later explores and finds a tunnel that leads from Gothel's mansion to the nearby kingdom of King Frederick. Helping to rescue one of Prince Stefan's younger sisters from a pitfall trap planted by the rival King Wilhelm of the neighboring kingdom that is feuding with Frederick's, Rapunzel meets Stefan, but is unable to ascertain his name before she has to retreat back to Gothel's to avoid raising her suspicion and endangering Penelope's father Hugo if Rapunzel is missing.
When Gothel discovers her disappearance, she demands to know who it was that Rapunzel met. When Rapunzel honestly says she does not know Stefan's name as she never asked for it, thinking she's lying, Gothel punishes her by transforming her room into a tall tower, stations Hugo outside to guard it, and destroys all of Rapunzel's paintings and paint supplies. However, as Rapunzel goes to sleep that night, the hairbrush is magically transformed into a paintbrush. She discovers its magical abilities the next day and uses it to create a portal out of her tower and to Frederick's kingdom to see Stefan again. While there, she takes the paintbrush to a silversmith, who notices it is actually from his brother in Wilhelm's kingdom, showing Stefan just how bad the feud is affecting the people in both kingdoms, especially families divided by living separated in one kingdom or the other.
When Penelope then shows up to warn Rapunzel to get back to the tower before Gothel finds out and punishes Hugo for it, Rapunzel paints a portal back on a door in the hedge garden, but not before Stefan invites her to an upcoming ball his father is holding for him. Once back in her tower, thus protecting Hugo, Rapunzel then sets about painting herself a new gown for the ball. After several tries, she settles on a beautiful sparkling purple and pink one with her long hair hanging down the back both freely and braided in several strands. However, Otto, Gothel's pet, saw all the magic dealings and told Gothel. When she confronts Rapunzel on her gown and the invitation, while Rapunzel again, honestly, says she does not know Stefan's name, thinking she's still lying to her, Gothel cuts Rapunzel's hair, destroys her magic paintbrush, casts an irreversible spell on the tower to imprison Rapunzel forever because of her so-called "lies", chains up Hugo for insubordination under the surmise he was helping Rapunzel, and takes off for the ball herself to find the boy Rapunzel met and eliminate him.
After Penelope stands up to her father and tells him how Rapunzel came back to protect him, realizing he had Rapunzel and his daughter all wrong, Hugo reminds Rapunzel that the spell only affects one with a lying heart. Rapunzel has been telling the truth, so the spell does not affect her as she passes harmlessly through it and hitches a ride on Penelope to fly over the magic wall and get to Frederick's castle to save Stefan after Hugo motivates his daughter to believe in herself in being a mighty dragon. Rapunzel arrives just as Gothel is confronting Stefan and Frederick just after King Wilhelm personally showed up to end the feud by force, accusing Frederick of kidnapping his daughter, Rapunzel, only for Gothel to reveal she kidnapped Rapunzel out of spite for Wilhelm spurning her for another woman when Gothel loved him.
Saving both kings and Stefan with her appearance, Rapunzel tries to reason with Gothel and plead for her to end this, but Gothel is in no mood for letting bygones be bygones and turns her attention to Rapunzel, chasing her out to the hedge garden where Rapunzel had left the portal back to her tower earlier. After a final attempt to reason with Gothel goes ignored, Rapunzel and Penelope lure Gothel into entering the portal and being trapped in Rapunzel's tower back at the mansion, and with the spell unbreakable, along with Gothel having lied so much, she's trapped for the rest of her life, undoing the magic wall and freeing Hugo, who taunts Gothel over her own mistake with the spell, before taking his leave, free of his servitude to her, while Gothel collapses in disbelief and defeat.
Back at Frederick's castle, after the kings and Stefan put out the fires Gothel caused, Stefan heads out to find Rapunzel, only for her to return unharmed before he even leaves the ballroom. As they reunite, it is then that Rapunzel is reunited with King Wilhelm, her father, who reveals that he and her mother had never lost their love for her and it remained as strong as ever, reciting the poem that was engraved on the hairbrush with her. With Rapunzel reunited with her birth father, Wilhelm apologizes to Frederick for the feud, but Frederick assures Wilhelm that he's just happy that Rapunzel is alright and they can put the feud behind them, forgiving Wilhelm for his actions. With their fathers having made peace and ended the feud, Rapunzel and Stefan are married with their parents in attendance alongside many citizens from both kingdoms. They later live in a castle of their own, joined by Hugo, Penelope, and Hobie, and live happily ever after.
