Hoo hoot! Link... Look up here! It appears that the time has finally come for you to start your adventure! You will encounter many hardships ahead... That is your fate. Don't feel discouraged, even during the toughest times! Go straight this way and you will see Hyrule Castle. You will meet a princess there...
~ Kaepora Gaebora.
Link... Wake up, Link, the chosen one... I am Rauru, one of the ancient Sages... Ages ago, we ancient Sages built the Temple of Time to protect the entrance to the Sacred Realm... This is the Chamber of Sages, inside the Temple of Light... The Temple of Light, situated in the very center of the Sacred Realm, is the last stronghold against Ganondorf's evil forces. The Master Sword--the evil-destroying sword that you pulled out of the Pedestal of Time-- was the final key to the Sacred Realm.
~ Rauru formally introducing himself to Link.

Rauru, also known as Kaepora Gaebora in his owl form, is a major character in the The Legend of Zelda video game franchise. He first appeared in the video game The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, disguised as a wise old owl that guides Link on his journey. When he meets Link once more as an adult, he reveals himself to be a member of the Seven Sages, representing the Sage of Light.

Biography[]

Unified Timeline[]

Backstory[]

Rauru is an ancient sage who built the Temple of Time where the Sealed Temple (seen in Skyward Sword) once stood during a period in history known as the Era of Chaos. Since then, he has resided within the Temple of Light located in the Sacred Realm to protect the Triforce from those who desire to steal it.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time[]

Rauru, in the form of Kaepora Gaebora, first meets Link on his way out of his home, the Kokiri Forest. Kaepora Gaebora gives Link advice on crossing the wide and potentially dangerous Hyrule Field. Once Link confirms he understands, Kaepora Gaebora will wish Link well and fly off. Kaepora Gaebora is encountered again and again throughout the game, functioning as both a tutorial and exposition for events. This includes explaining ways the world has changed to Link as an adult from it's state when he was a child. There are two occasions when Kaepora Gaebora will actually help Link get around, once at Lake Hylia where he will offer to carry Link back to Hyrule Castle, and once on top of Death Mountain where he will drop Link off in Kakariko Village.

Child Timeline[]

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask[]

Kaepora Gaebora will briefly meet Link in the game Majora's Mask in the Southern Swamps. Kaepora Gaebora will teach Link the extremely useful Song of Soaring, which allows Link to fly from one owl marker to another instantly. The markers are in Kaepora Gaebora's image and can be activated by slashing at them with a blade, prompting the statues to spread their wings. Activated statues will remain active even if Link goes back in time, thus giving him permanent warp points.

Because Termina is set to be in a parallel world from Hyrule, it is not clear if the Kaepora Gaebora depicted in this game is intended to be Rauru or a separate character entirely.

The Legend of Zelda: Four Sword Adventures[]

Kaepora Gaebora reappeared to aid Link during his quest to defeat Vaati and save Princess Zelda.

Other Media[]

Super Smash Bros.[]

Rauru, under his disguse Kaepora Gaebora, appears in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a advanced-ranked support spirit that prevents fog from forming during a battle. His spirit battle is on the battlefield form of the Distant Planet stage against a red Young Link, during the battle, the screen occasionally flips.

Trivia[]

  • Kaepora Gaebora will always ask if Link understands his message and repeat it again if Link wishes him to, during a second explanation Kaepora Gaebora will reverse his head, and switch yet again if Link wishes him to repeat his message still.
  • While Kaepora Gaebora does not appear in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Zelda's father Gaepora bears a resemblance to him.
  • A Gossip Stone found in The Lost Woods was the first to reveal that Kaepora Gaebora was rumored to be an ancient sage in Ocarina of Time which led many fans to theorise that the owl was Rauru in an alternate form. This was eventually confirmed to be the case in the Hyrule Historia.
  • Each of the seven sages in Ocarina of Time correspond with one of seven heavenly virtues. In Rauru's case, it would be patience (the opposite of wrath). This is due to the fact that he as the Sage of Light, waits seven years for Link to become old enough to become the hero of time as his spirit was sealed in the sacred realm for seven years.
