Raye Penber is a minor antagonist in the anime/manga series Death Note. He is an FBI agent investigating Light Yagami and the fiancé of Naomi Misora.
Appearance[]
Raye is a tall man with medium build. He has black hair and light blue eyes. He is seen wearing a long dark jacket when on the job.
Personality[]
Raye is a polite, serious and affable man. He has a strong sense of justice, and would actively help others in danger. He is able to keep a calm demeanor in danger as shown when the bus was hijacked and get a hold on a situation. However, he is not very cautious and is a little too easy to trust others, which eventually causes he and his fellow FBI agents deaths. He deeply loves his fiancé, Naomi Misora, and would prevent her from investigating Kira's case to remove her from danger.
History[]
Raye, along with 11 other FBI agents, are sent to Japan to investigate the Japanese police and those close to them after L suspects they one of them are Kira. Raye is first seen stalking Light Yagami and investigating him. He finds Light appears to be a normal student who only goes to school.
As Light is dating with a girl and the two boards a bus, Raye follows Light and takes the seat behind Light. Suddenly a bankrobber, Kiichiro Osoreda, boards the bus, hijacks it, pointing a gun at the driver's head, calling Spaceland, and demanding ransom for the release and return of his hostages. Light shows the girl a note telling her that he will attack the busjacker’s hand in which he holds the gun. Raye notices this and tries to stop Light, telling him he would handle the situation. Light replies him if he can prove he is not the busjacker's partner. Penber shows Light his FBI to prove it.
When Raye is analyzing the situation, Light throws the note on the ground, causing the busjacker to notice it. Osoreda picks up the paper, which acually is a paper from Death Note, causing him to see the floating shinigami Ryuk. Osoreda gets panicked and tries to shoot Ryuk, however Ryuk is immuine to the damage. As the busjacker has used up his bullets, Raye decided to move. Suddenly, Osoreda orders the bus driver to stop, running into the street, and is immediately hit by a car and died.
Raye returns home and sits down tiredly on a chair. His fiancé Naomi Misora, a former FBI agent, asks Raye about the situation. Naomi sharply notices the busjacker was a criminal reported on the news and died on the situation, and doubts whether it is really a coincidence. Raye tells Naomi not to involved in the case to ensure her wellbeing. He then talks to Naomi once they start a family, she won't have time to think about having been an agent.
On an afternoon when Raye is in an underground section of the Shinjuku Station, a hooded Light as Kira holds Penber hostage. Light tells Raye that he is Kira and threats him to not turn around. Light kills an employee in the shop to prove it after telling Raye the man is a rapist who escaped a court conviction due to a lack of evidence. Having proved he is Kira, Light threatens Raye to enter a train, and gives Raye a file and forces Raye to write all the FBI investigators' name on it, which is actually paper from Death Note, ensuring all the FBI agents' death. After Raye exits the train, he dies from a heart attack before seeing Light's face on the train.
Trivia[]
- Raye is the first Light's victim to be completely innocent of any crime.
