Re-L Mayer is the main female protagonist of Ergo Proxy. As an investigator for the Intelligence Bureau in Romdo, she is attacked by two monsters and drawn into the mystery of the Proxies. She eventually joins Vincent Law and Pino on their quest for answers.
She is voiced in Japanese by Rie Saito and in English by Megan Hollingshead.
Biography[]
Re-L is a Intelligence Bureau investigator tasked with locating and destroying Cogito infected AutoReivs. One night after leaving an ongoing investigation, she is confronted by a "monster" in her apartment. After this event, she is caught in a net of conspiracies around the Cogito Virus, the Domed Cities and the mysterious "Proxies". While investigating, she joins with the exiled Vincent Law and self aware AutoReiv Pino to expose the truth.
Personality[]
At first, Re-L comes off as very cold, antisocial and condescending to most of the people around her. Due to being the granddaughter of Donov Mayer, the regent of Romdo, she is fairly accustomed to having things her way, and has a developed a fairly spoiled disposition. Therefore, in conjunction with her rank, she tends to address people with a haughty air of superiority and is only concerned with results, not caring much for others' emotional plights or problems. However, over the course of series, particularly through her interactions with Vincent and Pino, as well as Iggy after he's infected by the Cogito virus, during which he harshly criticizes her for taking all his help for granted and all her other flaws, she begins to somewhat open up and be a little more sympathetic and kind to them, especially Vincent. However, she never loses her tough, no-nonsense demeanor and can still boss Vincent around sometimes.
It is revealed over the course of the series that due to having Iggy on hand to help her so much, she doesn't know how to do certain tasks, like cook or even fix her hair on her own. She also, in general, demonstrates a lack of ability to adapt to different surroundings, which she struggles with when she's travelling outside of Romdo with Vincent and Pino, needing to fall back on a strict routine/schedule to keep her sanity during downtime and tending to delegate many tasks to the two of them. However, she is also quick to come to their aid if either of them are in danger, showing that while she prefers not to show it, she genuinely cares about them.
While Re-l is generally rather emotionally reserved and tends to view everything with cold, impassive logic, she occasionally shows a rather hot-blooded and temperamental side when things don't go her way or others don't cooperate with her in some way or another, like when everyone from the Intelligence Bureau refuses to believe her claims that a pair of Proxies appeared and fought in her own house before she realizes they're trying to cover their existence up from the general populace. She is also somewhat foul-mouthed, especially in the English dub, being quick to curse when frustrated or puzzled in various situations, though not excessively.
Apart from her more passionate side, which many other citizens in Romdo lack, one of the other main things that sets Re-L apart from many of them is that while many of the others are perfectly content living the same mundane routine from day-to-day, Re-L frequently laments the dull, boring and unchaging nature of life in Romdo and isn't afraid at all of pursuing the truth, even if it completely changes everything she's thought to be true, to the extent she pursues it with a degree of obsession. She even outright admits near the end that she refuses to turn away from reality even if an even more harsh one awaits her. This shows that despite her inflexibility when it comes to maintaining certain daily routines and having those upset, she possesses a strength of character and ability to deal with whatever major revelations she uncovers that most of the other citizens didn't have, whose collective composure quickly falls apart when the developing conflict with the AutoReivs spirals out of control and their society collapses toward the end of the series.
Finally, she is shown to be very introspective, often engaging in long inner monologues contemplating the meaning of her existence and wondering what her raison d'etre is.
