John Grimm, also known as Reaper, is the main protagonist of the 2005 action horror film Doom. He is loosely based on the Doom Slayer from the video game series of the same name.

He is a military space marine of the UAC who abandoned his scientific heritage and became a member of the elite Rapid Response Tactical Squad (RRTS) in order to forget about the personal tragedy he had witnessed 10 years ago, in which the tragedy was his parents (who are UAC scientists) being killed in an accident during the early excavation of a Martian dig site.

He was portrayed by Karl Urban, who also played Éomer in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Leonard McCoy in the J.J. Abrams Star Trek films, Judge Dredd in Dredd, Skurge in Thor Ragnarok, Ghost in Pathfinder, Earl Pike in Black Water Transit, Detective Will Ruiney in Hangman and Billy Butcher in The Boys.

Personality[]

Grimm's personality can be seen as rather angsty, as he is still dealing with his guilt over his parents' deaths and his concern for his sister, Dr. Samantha Grimm, a researcher at the UAC Mars Facility. However, like his computer-game renditions, he has no problem killing multiple demons and even his own commanding officer, Sarge, after the latter begins to murder unarmed civilians in order to contain the outbreak.

Notably, at the end of the film, Grimm is injected with the Martian genetic material. Instead of turning into a monster, he instead gains superhuman strength, reflexes, and regenerative abilities. These powers allow him to stride through the infested base singlehandedly mowing down a small horde of demons including many zombies, several imps, a hell knight, and a demon(all seen by the audience in the game's classic first person perspective). This plot device is apparently the film's way of incorporating the berserk power-ups in the games.

Biography[]

John "Reaper" Grimm, his commanding officer Sarge, and the other members of the RRTS are dispatched to the UAC Olduvai Research Facility to investigate the disappearance of several scientists, where they confront humans who have mutated into demon-like creatures after being injected with an artificial 24th chromosome created from an ancient Martian retrovirus. Grimm is plagued by guilt over his parents' death, and is distracted by concern for his sister, Dr. Samantha Grimm, who is a researcher at the facility.

Grimm clashes with Sarge due to the latter's increasing hostility, aggression, and irrational bloodlust, and John's own high moral standards. This is particularly the case after Sarge callously executes The Kid, a fresh newbie, for insubordination after Sarge orders the mass murder of civilians in the quarantine zone in order to stop the spread of the infection. Grimm and The Kid's conflict with Sarge in this manner is an allusion to the original back story of Doom, in which the Doomguy confronts and assaults his commanding officer for ordering him to fire on civilians.

Near the film's climax, Grimm is fatally wounded and injected with the chromosome by his sister to save his life. Instead of becoming a monster, Grimm is granted superhuman strength, reflexes, and regenerative abilities. These new abilities allow him to single-handedly mow down a horde of monsters, presented in the film in first-person perspective as a direct homage to the film's roots. Grimm is eventually attacked by Sarge, who was also accidentally infected with the experimental chromosome in an earlier monster attack, and mutated into a hideous monster. Grimm manages to force Sarge back through the Ark teleporter, and tosses in a grenade after him, killing him. He then leaves the base as sole survivor of the RRTS, with his nearly unconscious sister in his arms.

Powers and Abilities[]

Powers[]

  • C24 Augmentation: Following being injected with a sample of the C24 serum by his sister, John didn't change into a monster, but gained superhuman abilities rivaling that of even the most peek humans on Earth. The only reason for his injection was to save his life, as he was wounded in the abdomen, which would've likely killed him otherwise.
    • Superhuman Strength: Reaper's physical strength had become enhanced to the point where he could easily take on his former commanding officer in hand to hand combat, as well as take on hordes of demons and monsters single-handed.
    • Superhuman Speed: Reaper possesses a great deal of inhuman speed, allowing him to move faster than the human eye can calculate. His reflexes also have been enhanced, allowing him to counter enemy attacks.
    • Superhuman Durability: When taking on enemy combatants, Reaper is capable of taking a great deal of physical abuse, even if he has been knocked down with significant amount of force.
    • Superhuman Healing: Following his injection, the cells in Reaper's body were capable of dividing 50 times more than normal. This gave him nearly instantaneous regenerative powers. It also gave him the ability to become immune to known human ailments, including viruses and cancers. It is unknown as to if this ability will attribute to an extended lifespan or not, however it is highly possible.
    • Superhuman Intellect: Not only did the serum enhance Reaper's physical abilities, but it also enhanced his mental faculties as well. This made his mind more sharper than any other normal human, allowing him to think creatively and take down enemies without always pointing his gun at them.
    • Superhuman Leap: Reaper's ability to jump has been enhanced to the point where he was capable of clearing an infected individual, wielding a chainsaw. It is unknown as to how high he can truly leap, but it's definitely well over a normal human.

Abilities[]

  • Military Training: As a member of the Marine Corps, Reaper has been well trained in terms of combat. This makes him lethal in hand to hand combat, melee weapon combat and even an expert in terms of weapons and various other pieces of equipment.
  • Science: Being the son of scientists, Reaper possesses knowledge in terms of genetics, however even he admits his knowledge in such a field is a bit rusty.

Quotes[]

I guess you got to face your demons sometimes.
~ Grimm.
He went to one galaxy, his ass went to another.
~ Grimm.
COME ON, YOU MOTHERFUCKER! YEAH!
~ Grimm before engaging the Pinky Demon.
Don’t shield a baby from time.
~ Grimm upon seeing the remains of Lucy and her Child.

Trivia[]

  • Grimm is the film's equivalent of the Doomguy. The only differences that make him stand out from the protagonists in the games is due to having an actual name and interacting with other characters via his own dialogue. His opposition with Sarge for ordering him to kill innocent civilians mirrors the protagonist's backstory in the original Doom.
