NOTE: This article is about the incarnation of Red from Pokémon Origins. The mainstream incarnation could be found here: Red (Pokémon).

Red is the main protagonist of the 2013 spin-off anime miniseries Pokémon Origins. He is pretty much similar to his game counterpart other than the introduction of elements in future generations. Unlike his game counterpart however, he does have speaking roles.

He is voiced by Junko Takeuchi in the Japanese version, and by Bryce Papenbrook in the English dub. The latter is famous for voicing Kazuto "Kirito" Kirigaya from Sword Art Online, Rin Okumura from Blue Exorcist, Eren Jaeger from Attack on Titan, Masaomi Kida from Durarara!!, Shirou Emiya from Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works, Adrien Agreste / Cat Noir from Miraculous Ladybug, Makoto Naegi and Nagito Komaeda from Danganronpa, Meliodas from The Seven Deadly Sins, Inosuke Hashibira from Demon Slayer, Eugene Sevenstark from Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans, Law from Tales of Arise, and many other anime characters.

Biography[]

This incarnation of Red is almost similar to his mainstream incarnation in addition to his desire to complete the Kanto Pokédex, but with a few major differences, aside from speaking throughout the story. His defeat of the Rocket Hideout is rather shown as a flashback rather than actually happening. Also, he didn't calm the ghost Marowak, unlike in the games. Instead of getting Professor Oak his parcel, he immediately gets his Pokédex and starter Pokémon on his first visit to his Laboratory. They and Blue first battle on Route 1, instead of in Professor Oak's Laboratory. He references the lab battle by proposing that he and Red "test out [their] Pokémon" like in the games, but quickly changes his mind. Brock meets Red on Route 1, whereas in the games he meets Red at the Gym, like all the Gym Leaders except Giovanni. Finally, he only battles Giovanni in Silph Co, while he already owns a Jolteon by the time he visits Pokémon Tower first without reaching Celadon City, where he would obtain Eevee at Celadon Condominiums.

Personality[]

His personality is similar his original counterpart, except for being shifted slightly into being a well-meaning polite kid. However, he's also a klutz, in the beginning of his journey, he tends to forget type-match ups (as seen in his first battle against Blue). Initially, he saw Pokémon as tools rather than partners, but as the series progressed, he learns to genuinely care for them. He does have a sense of morality, always standing up for what's right.

Trivia[]

  • The team Red uses to become champion is the same team Satoshi Tajiri used when playing Red and Green for the first time.
