Rei Kiriyama (桐山 零 Kiriyama Rei) is the main protagonist of the series. He is a 18 year old 5 dan in Shogi, who became a professional during middle school. He is voiced by Kengo Kawanishi, who did the major role of Mikazuki Augus from Mobile Suit Gundam Iron-Blooded Orphans.
Rei has had a very traumatic childhood. He mentions he was bullied at school and in the neighborhood, and couldn't relate to the other children. After his parents and sister died in a traffic accident, he was taken care of by his father's friend Kōda and became his apprentice in shōgi. Through his step-father's tutelage, he became a professional shōgi player while still in middle school. Afterwards, he decided leave home, due to feeling guilty about his presence negatively affecting his foster family. After moving out, he starts living alone in an apartment at the city of Rokugatsu-chō. However, experiencing a desire to attend school, Rei later joined a high school after a one-year delay.
Powers and Abilities
Apathy - User can suppress or negate emotions in themselves or do not possess emotions at all, allowing them to ignore emotional distractions, suffering from psychological/emotional stress, and/or feeling from affecting their thinking processes. In some cases, the user is simply unable to feel emotions of any kind.
Chess Empowerment - Users become stronger, faster, more durable, etc. from the game of chess, possibly unlocking abilities related to the affinity and enhancing the existing powers. Some users may be able draw sustenance from their affinity or even slow or stop aging. User may draw different abilities from different variations of chess or from various chess-pieces.
Chess Manipulation - User can move, shape and manipulate the game of chess; including chessboards and chess pieces. The user can not only move the pieces on an active game of chess, but can also bend, break, or create new rules to the game on a whim. Some users can manifest and control the conceptual properties of chess into reality.
- Rei was isolated from his peers when he was younger, and he once mentioned that he was usually the target for bullying as a child.
- Rei has never had much in the way of friends, and indeed, even as a young child, his status as a shogi prodigy led him to interact solely with adults and not other people his own age. Of course, Rei's incapability of making friends is informed by the fact that Rei is the point-of-view character and his own outlook on his life.
