They'll all pay for what happened to me. Noxus, the Black Rose... everyone.
~ Rell

Rell, known as The Iron Maiden, is one of the playable champions in the MOBA game League of Legends, and one of the few actually heroic characters hailing from Noxus. She was a girl born with the ability to manipulate metal, whom was experimented on at an academy run by the Black Rose. Upon finding out the horrific truth about the academy, she destroyed it and now roams Noxus in a crusade to kill everyone involved with the academy and free Noxian youths who were victims like herself.

She is voiced by Laya DeLeon Hayes, who also voiced Doc McStuffins.

Biography[]

WANTED! MUST BE ALIVE FOR REWARD!
Attention!

The empire will pay greatly for the capture and detainment of this runaway criminal. The fugitive is EXTREMELY dangerous, so approach with caution. They are heavily armored and will attack if even slightly provoked. Wear light armor, as reports show warbands have been killed with their heavy gear twisted and shattered, littering the ground around them. The criminal’s been known to mount a quick retreat when cornered, so bringing a highly-trained team is recommended.
If you somehow manage to detain this criminal, please bring them directly to the closest empire building marked with a black rose.
~ The Black Rose's wanted poster describing Rell.

A Noxian girl born with powerful magical abilities, Rell was the daughter of a foot soldier and the heir to a fallen noble house. They never showed her any love and instead wanted to mold her into a weapon to shatter Noxus' political landscape. Rell's mother always said to her that "excellence is measured in sacrifice". LeBlanc, the leader of the Black Rose cabal, visited Rell's family to offer to raise Rell in a Noxian boarding school, seeing the girl's power as a weapon that can defeat the Black Rose's enemy, Mordekaiser. They accepted, and Rell thought that things would get better for her, but she was proven wrong.

At the age of eight, Rell sparred with another student and won. She was given a sigil painfully grafted onto her arm, but she never saw that student again. As she continued to spar with the other students, they all began to disappear as Rell got more and more sigils. The academy wanted Rell to be the most powerful soldier that Noxus had ever known. On her sixteenth birthday, Rell had enough and wanted to find out what was going on. She ended up discovering a forbidden part of the school, where her fellow students had their magic (and humanity) ripped away from them, leaving them as emotionless husks. She also found out that her mother was the headmaster of the school, who claimed that she had been doing all this for Rell and repeated her motto of "excellence is measured in sacrifice".

In a fit of rage, Rell unleashed the full extent of her ferrokinetic powers and tore the academy to shreds, killing most of the staff. She formed a lance and a horse-like construct out of the metal scraps of the destroyed building, and rescued as many surviving students as possible. Since then, the sixteen-year old Rell became a feared criminal in Noxus, publicly killing anyone involved with the academy and in doing so, exposing the Black Rose's secrets. However, Rell's hatred grew to the entirety of the Noxian Empire due to how they knowingly let this unethical grooming happen forever yet were indifferent (and even encouraging) towards their suffering. She became a wanted criminal across Noxus and decimated Noxian troops who tried to pursue her, but from her eyes she was a hero who defended the weak and saved the innocent.

Afterwards, the bounty hunter Samira was tasked by the Black Rose to capture Rell.

Personality[]

Rell is jaded and hardened, stemming from the years of her childhood where she was treated like a weapon and sentenced to experiments by the Black Rose. Upon finding out the truth, she became a wrathful crusader who was willing to kill everyone in her way without hesitation. She has a misanthropic attitude and distrusts everyone, specifically towards Noxus since they ruined the futures of countless children in order to raise them as weapons or sacrifice them to empower those who were stronger. She remembers the people involved with the Black Rose academy and killed all of them, and now wants to find her mother so she can kill her too for the atrocities she committed.

Despite this, Rell is merciful to the children groomed to the Noxian system, and wants to save as many of them as she can due to being a victim herself, alongside all of her classmates who were sacrificed against their will. In-game, Rell holds no hatred towards her allied champions, promising to help them in battle and encouraging them to fight their enemies. She even starts to trust her allies if they assist her in getting kills.

Rell's LGBT sexuality is hinted through lines addressed to certain champions (Ekko, Leona, Seraphine or Sett), being awkward yet romanced when thinking about them, and feeling disappointed upon killing them since she can't develop her relationships with them.

Trivia[]

  • Rell shares many similarities with the villainous champion Sylas and his similar resentment towards Demacia:
    • Both of them were born to a society which dehumanized mages (Demacia was prejudiced against them out of fear, Noxus weaponized their magic while disregarding their human worth).
    • Both were taken by an evil organization to a place where they spent several years in, only for their resentment to grow (The Black Rose's academy for Rell, the Mageseekers and the mage prison for Sylas).
    • Both escaped their capture by unleashing their full power, causing many casualties and going on destructive rampages.
    • Both are seen as villainous by their respective nations, but they ultimately want freedom for the people whom they oppressed (even if their methods are morally gray).
